Do you need to Regear for Larger Tires? Jeep Gladiator Rubicon

Is it really necessary to regear when you go to larger tires? I've been running the factory 4.10 gears on my 2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon with 37s for 12,000 miles now and decided it was time to regear so I took it to Mud Connection 4x4 in Little Rock, Arkansas, to put in a set of 5.29 gears from Nitro Gear and Axle. Is it worth it?

Just test fit my 37x13.50r17 Toyo’s on my Rubi w/Manual Transmission. Even on stock tires 6th gear really doesn’t seem to have any power until you’re up around 65-70. You’ve really done a great job of showing what these Jeeps can do. Truly some epic trips! ~Jon@SBYD

My dad bought an '84 CJ7 Laredo when I was 9, that's the vehicle I learned to hold a flashlight in lol! Helped him rebuild the 3 speed auto with a shift kit, and later got to drive it when I was in high school in the early 2010's. It was such a beautiful jeep, forest green with dark gold and light brown striping/decals. Had the really rare nutmeg seats and soft tops. We put a 3" lift and 33" mud terrains on it, had the venerable AMC straight 6 that didn't pass 100,000 miles until my little brother was in high school a few years later. Left the factory with every bell and whistle available, even had working AC and a clock in the dash, with every type of door and top you could have. Very fond memories in it, many trips to self serve car washes to get the Georgia clay off before getting home hahaha! He later sold it to help my brother get a new car for college. I hope to track that one down one day...

My 2018 JLUR 3.6 V6 on 37's and 4.88 nets me15.5 avg around town, and up to 18 mpg on the highway depending on the type of road. Just went from Georgia to New York up I 81 to overland on some of the MABDR and these numbers are from that trip. And that was running 73mph at about 2200rpm. This info just for reference for anyone looking to compare. The lowest on the highway on this trip was 16.6 but most stops I was doing the manual method for checking and saw 17.4 avg. 4 people, full baggage (wife, daughter and her friend lol.) Not sure of my jeep weight, but it has a soft top, LoD rear bumper and tire carrier, LoD rock sliders, Rugged Ridge front bumper and RR flat fenders.

I had never heard of Mud Connection until now. Looks like a great place to go for upgrades. I do my own work since I am I am have been a Toyota mechanic for over 30 years. I did4.88 gears in the JK(should have went with 5.13) and 5.13 in the TJ , gears are definitely not something you want to tackle in your driveway. MPG I always smile when someone asks, my response is about 5 or 6 gallons per hour on the interstate or 3 hours a tank on the 2 door JK. I wish I could have made the Rendezvous but thats our anniversary weekend but who knows maybe next year. Stephen and myself are looking forward to the Patreaon weekend. Keep up the wonderful work on the videos! Oh yeah. Hello Cara.

Wow. The difference between a gladiator Rubi with a 3.6 and a JLU Rubi with a 2.0 is big. My 2021 JLU Rubi with a 3.5” lift and 37” tires (tire and rim combo weigh 121# each) gets 16mpg average mixed driving. I see 8th all the time. It shifts to 7th a little sooner when going up hill. And it seems to do good Offroad so far. I’ll be at hot springs ORV park this weekend to test it out again. I was set and ready to get regeared to 4.88 or 5.13 but I’m definitely rethinking that for the time being. The engine does not seem to struggle and my transmission doesn’t hunt for gears. And I dropped roughly 3mpg from stock. I just can’t find a reason to swap out gears…yet.

I did make it to Rendezvous in the Ozarks 2021, after driving just over 1,000 miles one way from out West to get there. It rained pretty much the entire time I was there (plus more than 2" of rain on Wednesday, the day before I got there). After 2 days I couldn't take it any more, and bugged out on Friday. It looks like it would have been a great event, had it not been held in a swamp. I hate hate HATE mud, so I won't be going back. Though I did get to see some very cool rigs and camp setups, and met some very nice people. That part was great.

When i was in the army in Germany, we had a mechanic who went along with johnny cash's song about the caddie he built. My buddy mechanic ordered all of the parts for a M151 jeep and built it behind the motorpool shop. He drove it around for a while until it was discovered on an inspection. It was confiscated and he got sent back to the states. The commander got the neep. But before my friend left the country, he painted the WHOLE jeep bright yellow- windows, tires, everything.

I have a 2-door JK Sport that I regard to 4.88 and I'm happy. My wife has a JT with 4.10's and with the 8 speed transmission we've felt no need to re-gear running 35's. It would be nice if Jeep would do 4.10 gears standard on all Wranglers and Gladiators and put factory 4.88's or 5.13's on the Rubicon.

Great video as always! I just put a deposit on a new 2024 Rubicon X. I get a choice of two rear axle ratios. 4.56 and 4.88. I opted for the 4.56 because I don't plan on going bigger than 35" tires. I will have a roof top tent, frig, and recovery gear. Should I go for the 4.88? I am undecided. I think I would get worse mileage with the 4.88. I only have maybe a 20% change of moving up to 37" tires someday. Seems to me that Jeep designed this to work with 4.56 and it should be fine.

I’ll be going from 35s to 37s on my 2018 JL Rubicon with 4.10s. I spend 99% of my time on the pavement; no sense in lying or pretending otherwise. Zero need for me to change gears, as the engine & trans setup is excellent in these newer Jeeps. Had a Toyota Tacoma & the transmission was horrid by comparison. Now, for a guy like you that’s out on the trails so often; I get it completely. Plus, your rig is heavier as loaded than mine.

The moment you go bigger than a 33", you need to regear. You can't just drive around and say, "Oh yeah, this is fine...". Your vehicle is designed a certain way, and if you decide to move that much weight, with the loading from the weight of the centrifigul force of a much heavier wheel, you will cause damage. Also, most people just don't change their tire/rim set-up. They add bumpers, winches, lift kits that may or may not weigh more than stock, fridges, gear, RTT's and trailers...so much harder on your vehicle. Think about that?
