A trike seems so stable, you'd think you wouldn't need to wear a helmet. Watch and find out!

I don't have my trike yet. I am expecting one I've had ordered any day now, however. I have ridden motorcycles since I was 16 years old, though. Currently, do to the aches and pains of getting older, I am now riding a Harley-Davidson Tri Glide, which is Harley's trike. I have never worn a motorcycle helmet, since I've always lived in a state with no helmet law. I detest the hot, uncomfortable things. I never wore a helmet when I rode a bicycle as a kid (they didn't exist, I don't think back then). I've also ridden in the beds of pickup trucks, rode horses, and did an assortment of other things which could be considered dangerous, I suppose, all of which I did bareheaded. Arguments for and against helmets on both motorcycles and recumbent trikes can go on and on. We could literally argue that, because the unexpected can happen, we should put a helmet on our heads as soon as we get out of bed in the morning. After all, one can get wrapped up in the sheets and fall out of the bed. One could fall in the shower. And, certainly, as is even sort of implied in this video, wear a helmet when you're driving in your car. As a matter of fact, falls around the house, and, no doubt, car accidents, happen far more often than bike or trike crashes. Does crap happen sometimes? Well, yes, of course it does. But, do we live our lives sweating to death wrapped in bubble wrap and wearing helmets because we're scared to death to live? I'm not doing that. So, my opinion, for what it's worth, do what you want, regarding wearing a helmet. Wear one, or don't. It's up to you. And, that is exactly how it should be.

Great advice. One never knows when stuff is going to happen….that is why they are called “accidents”. They are light, strong, have airflow and mot terribly expensive. If one can spend thousands on a trike, $50-75 for a helmet is no big deal.

Many thanks. I’m fairly new to recumbent trikes but so thankful I found out about them. 7 major spine ops and fusions and both knees now titanium I could no longer ride an upright bike. My weight ballooned out to 91 kilograms and my constant body pain had me believing that I was unable to do any exercise. Because of this disease I could only walk one to two hundred meters (hips were next to be replaced) four months on and my weight is now 80 kg and my overall health has changed for the better. I could only afford a Greenspeed GT1 with 16” wheels but it’s done the job and yes I wear a helmet. Kind regards, Chris.

I'm 163 kg. (360 lbs for us Americans) I switched to a recumbent last summer, and they're amazing. I ended up finding a used Azub T-tris for sale locally. The guy I bought it from had all sorts of "aftermarket parts" too, from a bike vs vehicle collision years ago, but finally got too old to ride it. I can't believe I didn't make the switch earlier. It's like pedaling a Lay-z-boy recliner down the road. I ride far further and far more often than I did my upright bike. I used to be near the weight limit, but after sitting around for 4 months during Covid, and a later broken sternum while skiing, my weight ballooned to where I was afraid of the carbon front fork failing on me. I ultimately plan to upgrade to a full suspension trike, but I'll ride this one a bit longer to get into shape first, since I'm technically over the weight limit still.

having the misfortune of being hit by a pickup truck about fourteen months ago, I can testify a good helmet saved a serious brain trauma at least, my life at worst. It was cracked across three internal sections which could likely have been my head. I will never forget skidding across the pavement on my head before rolling. I had just replaced an older model. It is a common idea to replace any helmet at five plus years as materials naturally deteriorate. That is more than sales hype. Insurance paid me enough to get a new trike, all new clothes as they were shredded…my first stop was to pick out a helmet to match the one that was wrecked. I lived to warn others. I am a believer.

Wow, Mark! Glad to hear you're OK! How did the truck hit you? I had a driver turn in front of me about 14 years ago while I was on a road bike and I was launched into the side of the car head first. The helmet took most of the abuse from that first hit and saved my head. The rest of my body wasn't so lucky when I eventually hit the ground. :)

On those beautiful days where I would ride my motorcycle without wearing a helmet I would often get asked by motorists why I am not wearing one. Of course I acknowledge that the safety risk is increased by not doing so, but I would ask them why they are not wearing one as well. One of the largest and most serious injuries in traffic accidents is blunt trauma to the head. If every car driver wore a helmet this would be significantly reduced. I also pointed out that small children are required to wear a 5-point restraint while traveling in a car. Why are the adults not required to wear them? They are proven to significantly reduce risk injury during a collision and they are required on racetracks. Lap belts were shown to INCREASE spinal injuries. Half-shell helmets are shown to increase neck and upper spine injuries. My point is, where do you draw the line. You were making the same case by mentioning, tongue-in-cheek, the full suit of armor approach. We all make balanced decisions that impact our safety risk every day. So I would ask this…is it better to wear a half-shell bicycle helmet on a stable, low to the ground trike, or to wear a wide brim hat that keeps you cooler AND protects you from skin cancer? Some might say, wear both, to which I would ask if I should break out my Samurai armor.

I started wearing helmets in the late 90's and when I had my unfortunate encounter with a car, I went headfirst into the side of a door. Nice dent in the helmet but my head was OK. I remember the "Skid Lid"! There's an urban rumor that the owner of the company died of head trauma while wearing his own helmet but no idea if that's true.

The Skid Lid! Yeah, I’ll have to admit that was my first helmet. 1982, wow! I’d bought my bike with no advice, as I did my helmet. I felt I needed help getting a Presta floor pump, so I went by the LBS. John grabbed me, put me on my bike (a Sears thing) and proceeded to make sure I was up to speed. One look at the Skid Lid, and started to list cons. My eyebrows raised, I bought a Bell. And John became my best friend.

The worst I’ve sustained head injury wise is concussions which helmets don’t seem to help lots of road rash helmets don’t prevent that and a broken neck it didn’t prevent that injury. Great topic for a video thats been debated about for years now . Helmets save lives as much the point will be argued . Now helmets dont work in all situations but they do reduce severity of injuries , just ask an emergency room doctor his or hers opinion . I wear a helmet in all situations just like i wear my seat belt in all situations , but apparently some cyclist and people in general dont like to be told what to do even if it benefits them . Recumbents do by design come with added risk because of visibility issues as drivers will often tell you , sometimes with words and sometimes with a middle finger or both . So it comes down to personnel choice , if you want to wear a helmet then wear one if not roll the dice if you will .

Rich, I have another reason to wear a helmet... flying rocks from passing cars. I use a helmet that has a face shield that covers my eyes and upper face. Mouth and chin exposed. I was out for just a little ride, nothing crazy. A car passed me very courteously but kicked up a tiny rock from the wheels and sent it flying at my face. Of course you don't see it but after getting hit I pulled over and there was a little ding on the face shield. So I highly recommend the helmet with the face shield. Mine attaches with magnets and is very easy to switch shields. I use the yellow one for early morning or night rides.

Holy cow, Jason, that's a scary story! I had a deer run next to me on a ride this morning, but thankfully he eventually ran in the other direction. Those deer scare the bejesus out of me because they're all over the place up here, and I'm constantly afraid that one will run in front of me (just like what happened to you). Glad to hear you weren't seriously injured in that incident. The aero helmet thing- I was researching awhile back as to what helped the most as far as helping with aerodynamics. The article I was reading had a big list of things that helped, and an aero helmet was somewhere down near the middle of the list. What surprised me was that the item at the very top of the list was a skin suit! Didn't imagine a skin suit would help all that much, but I guess it cuts down on drag all along your body. I've been wanting to try wheel covers, but still haven't gotten around to it. If you do pick up an aero helmet, let me know how it works for you!
@karlaldinger3017
@karlaldinger3017 2 жыл бұрын
I've also thought about the benefits of an aero helmet on a trike. One thing to consider is that a fully aero helmet is actually designed for triathletes and time trialists who are fully hunched over with their heads so low, it's tucked below their backs. That means they are straining to look up in their position. But on recumbent trikes your back is inclined backwards, and we strain to keep our heads forward and vertical. Some radical designs of trikes and recumbents, leave the rider with head canted back and they aim their eyes across their chins to see forward. So I guess you'd benefit from considering your head position very carefully, knowing the aero helmets are presuming a different one. Probably still a win with the integrated eye cover/visor.

To top it off Australia and New Zealand are the 2most dangerous first world countries to ride a bike despite the fact that we have compulsory helmet laws, whereas where my brother lives in the Netherlands is one of the safest 2 despite the fact that almost noone wears a helmet to ride a bicycle.

@@KrunchyJD Someone should really do a study of the various countries and the relative danger of cycling in each. I know there are some European countries where bikes are used mainly for transportation to and from work or the store, almost no one wears helmets and there are very few injuries. I suspect these countries have a great infrastructure for cycling and a long history of the population relying on bikes as their main mode of transportation. Over here in the States, cycling has always been seen as something little kids do before they get their drivers license, and there's almost no concern or respect for cyclists out on the road. The attitude of drivers is pretty much that cyclists are "playing" in the roads, should be riding on the sidewalk, and if they get hit, it's their fault for being dumb enough to go out riding amongst the autos. We did have a big bike boom here in the late 1800's to early 1900's which was actually responsible for creating most of the roadways in this country, but as soon as the autos came along, the roads were co-opted, and cycling's popularity vanished until a small boom in the 1970's. Unfortunately, there's really no history of cycling in this country that would lead drivers to respect someone on a bike.

@@bikestrikesrazors The problem with the helmet laws, is that what happens is people think I need to get to the shops, I'll take my bike, then can't remember where they put their helmet, so they just drive, and it makes bike hire schemes almost useless for the same reasons.

Yes wear a helmet.. And get a good one like the SmithOptics Forefront 2... I was on a green light riding thru an intersection, a Car ran the red light. She was Texting and Driving...need i say more..? The side collision, to my boom flipped me over a couple times. The helmet was cracked.. I did end up with a concussion. But the ER Doctor said, "if you had not been wearing a "really good helmet" you would be dead right now. You don't have to worry about your trike riding abilities.. 'YOU have to worry about the idiots that think it is ok to text and drive' Ride defensively.. and Always wear a "really Good Helmet". it can save your life.

Glad you weren't hurt worse! If the timing was a little different, you could've easily been killed! Someone's going to have to do something about disabling texting while driving. I understand that the technology is there to do it, but lawmakers don't have the guts. Our only hope may be the eventual adoption of autonomous cars.

@@bikestrikesrazors Thank you.. i think we should get rid of all cars/trucks and bring back horses.. BTW: Bicycles were here long before cars were.. And that is why a bike always has right of way. Let the trucks/cars use only freeways.. all the rest needs to belong to the bicycle..

The highest risk of a head injury is in your own home, followed by in the car and with a very small risk on your bike. So why wear a helmet on a bike, as the risk is by far the lowest? Also, people that wear a helmet, are more often in an accident than people that not wear a helmet!

Hi Sky Man and thanks for your comment! I guess that begs the question, "How much time do most people spend in their house/car vs on their bikes? I'll say this, I know a number of folks that have crashed on their bikes and hit their heads (helmet or not) but don't know anybody that's hit their head in their house.

No in my case wearing a helmet can end your life, if you are bald like me wearing a helmet means you can't wear a hat, the sun gets through the vents of the helmet and you get sunburnt. Great. Sunburn leads to skin cancer.. If you want to wear a helmet, good for you, but the idea that a polystyrene hat will protect you against an impact with a car is rediculous. Bicycle helmets at best are designed to protect your head in the case of a fall, that's it..

No wonder cycling is such a fringe activity in some countries! If they keep going on about falling off bikes it really shouts "dangerous activity". Different attitude in the Netherlands though.

They certainly do treat cycling, and cyclists differently over there. In many European countries, they've had a cycling infrastructure dating back to the very beginnings of cycling, with folks using bikes as a main means of transportation. This has resulted in generations of Europeans learning to respect cyclists, and seeing them as their potential moms, dads, grandmas, grandads, brothers and sisters. Over here in the U.S., unfortunately, as soon as automobiles became popular, bikes were relegated to something used only by kids, and as soon as a kid was able to drive, the bike went into the back of the garage or the trash heap. As a result, we have real hostility on the part of many drivers who never learned to respect bikes as another means of transportation and who see cyclists as someone "playing in the road" and "getting in their way". There's very little respect for cyclists here, and often they're intentionally "buzzed", yelled at and sometimes even driven off the road. Whole different deal going on here when compared to the Netherlands.

It does appear dangerous watching it. When you're on the trike, it doesn't seem that bad. Maybe because your visual range is so good with your head upright. But you do have to remain vigilant and realize people can't see you as well as a regular bike rider!

Great Video .....with such light and comfortable helmets available there is no reason not to use one .It may be suggested that it is a personal choice to wear one or not, but why choose to model behavior that could end up in some young person following your lead and ending up with brain injury. A visit to a children's hospital ICU might help one to decide whether to wear a helmet or not, both for your own personal safety and the message you convey to younger people.
