For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ The Pentatonic scale is underrated. Here's something I was practicing today which I think has a classy sound. Eric Johnson, Allan Holdsworth, Bill Evans, Joe Bonamassa.....Every vocalist, every saxophonist....They use the Pentatonic scale - it's great!

Get my PADs bundle here: www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr... (this folder will grow, and I'd encourage you to ask for different keys/songs and stuff that might suit this type of preset?)
I've decided to make it possible to grab both my Helix/HX Stomp bundles (the expression bundle with freeze presets has always been separate) together for £5 - www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr... - I will then email you a link to both bundles!
Try my general patches for Helix or HX Stomp in this bundle for £3 using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr...

I go to Berklee and our teachers often push us to go beyond pentatonics without ever exploring them in this depth. I love the sound of pentatonic scales and they are so versatile so I’m glad you’re showing their potential in ways many of us never learn

So right in the middle of the video a commercial came on and the guy said “do you know there is a way to learn musical talent”.? So, I said “yep”, hit the skip button and went back to watching the video.

I’ve seen my share of ‘pentatonic secrets’ videos, so almost missed out on this gem. As an higher level intermediate guitarist I enjoy videos like this that don’t tediously break down everything note for note and instead focus more on the concept…then let us watch you apply it at different speeds. As guitarists we can’t forget that we are musicians first and foremost.

Your playing, lessons, and insights are always helpful. I recently saw a video that demoed BB boxes (BB King/Blues Boxes). They are Pentatonic boxes, but are restricted to the 3 treble strings. This puts the notes typically used in Blues melodies right under your fingers, and in a shape that is useful for generating good sounding Blues licks and lines. Surprisingly simple and effective. 😎

I love the pentatonic scale. It's so easy to aeolianize it or dorian it up. Or take it in the mixolydian direction. And the chord tones are often there too.

this totally clicked for me, and as a lower-level intermediate player who has been attempting to “break out of” or simply combine pentatonic boxes I was able to immediately apply this and thanks to you I have a new concept to practice applying. 😌 It should be mention additionally how great your playing is in this one, beautiful stuff man. I love the background droning tones as well. Reminded me a bit of animals as leaders(crazy as that sounds)

This is such a beautiful video to help us understand and practice pentatonic sequences. So many people teach pentatonic scales, but very few play the different sequences at different speeds and in a musical context so we can actually hear what the end result is supposed to sound like. I'd rather watch 1 video like this than 10 garden variety lessons on playing the 5 box shapes. Nice work!

Really nice, thank you. This also really reminded me how I lack control over my pull-offs. I want them to be on tempo, at the same volume and sound like picked notes. I really have to play this slow and make it sound good. Stupid fingers!

Beautiful work JC! I love the pentatonics for jazz because they offer distinct colors of the Maj scale. For instance over CMaj7, you could play AmPentatonic, EmiP, DmiP (carefully), and BmiP (with +11). Additionally, if you're playing a 2-5-1,for the 5 chord altered sounds, play a 4mi pentatonic.

I learned this little pattern a while back but haven't revisited it in a long time. Thanks for reminding me of how great it sounds! Could you provide the chord names or a backing track for the chords you are playing over? Context is everything and the pentatonics sound killer over these chords.

I think he uses a Helix with a chord freeze effect. This way he can pull up a patch, hit the chord, freeze it, then select a different snapshot within the patch to practice solo ideas, scales, etc. Check out his other videos on freezing, or you can get some simple pedals to add a background "pad". I prefer a stand-alone looper with a drum kit installed. I can play a simple chord, play the drum at a tempo and practice away. No rules.
