A matched pair is key because I’m not smart enough to tell the differences between a new string I’m testing vs my regular setup unless I can compare them in real time. Same for adjusting customizations; I have to feel the different weightings side by side against the same opponent in the same weather or I get confused. ‘Love this topic; no one else is providing content like this.

@@TennCom Hi, can you do a video of playing 1-2 hour tennis with different weight racquets starting from your normal heaviest going lighter every 10 minutes as your arm would get tired, as an exercise, does it feel any different than sticking to the heaviest racquet? Thanks P.S. a simpler option would be to pick the lighter racquet after playing 1 hour with the heavier/normal one and review the difference in how it feels continuing playing.

Sometimes, switching raquet in a match where all goes bad, erases all the other factors of distraction and let you return in the match. I made it so many times, as you could do now between the vcore 98 and the radical mp auxetic you want to switch to... Depending on your oponent, conditions (wind, court...), Balls etc... Just taking the other one can make the tricks and let your mind free from a lot of adjustement while points are fading. I even saw a guy switching raquets when turning just to have more control or power when the wind is in front or back, letting him swingthe same... So yes, having 2 diff raquets you really know and made for diff senario can save your trust, consistency and so : the match !

Aah, the joy of collecting and tinkering is music to my ears! My favorite racquets that I play the most with are the Diadem Elevate Tour, Prince Graphite 107, Wilson Prostaff 97, and the Volkl C10 pro. I have others, but 1 of those is always in the bag. The extra frames of these 5 are all matched and I usually string them consistently at 48lbs with volkl cyclone (maybe will be replaced with zero) or forten syn gut with gosen polynon. These days I have three racquets in my bag when I go to the court. My main racquet (Pure Aero 2023), my backup racquet/previous main racquet (Pure Aero 2019), and my doubles racquet (Pure Strike 16x19 Gen 3). My two Pure Aeros are strung the same (RPM Blast 17 at 54), but there are certainly some differences in the frames. My Pure Strike (RPM Blast 17/VS Touch 16 Hybrid at 52/54) is obviously quite different, but it suits my game well when I’m going to be at the net a lot. Maybe that seems weird to some people, but rec players bringing multiple identical racquets to the court seems weird to me. Why spend that kind of money? Racquets aren’t cheap. Having said that, I’ll probably get a Gen 4 Pure Strike soon and start carrying four. I don’t play doubles very often, but those new Strikes look really nice and I have a shopping problem.

Lots of good reasons to have 2 of the same racket at the (passionate) rec level. They don't need to be perfectly matched, close enough is good enough. For one, sh*t happens and sometimes you break a frame and a replacement is not easily available. Strings don't often break during a match but it happens. If you're in a good flow, you don't want to switch to another frame. Sometimes you want to play while your racket is still at the stringer. Finally, as others have mentioned, tinkering with different strings, leather grips, lead tape, etc... is a lot easier when you have a non-modded racket to compare to. Find a second hand or sale version of your favorite to keep as a backup. I have two of my fave and then a few others I just like to play with because they're cool, feel good (love me an old school thin beam, small head tight string pattern frame), help me with my game, are good for doubles, or are a little easier to play with if I'm injured or out of shape.

I use two matched mp radicals And two matched gravity pros I alternate depending on how I’m feeling that day. If I feel like being lazy or playing doubles I use the mp since it’s lighter and the gravity for days where I’m playing more seriously and usually singles matches. Works for me 🤷🏾♂️

I love trying out different racquets. it's like savoring the different nuances of fine wines. Sure, it's all "just wine" and you could probably get used to whichever you chose. But I have found that there is such a difference between different racquets, I just love trying them out and seeing which I like best (I think I've had 7-8 different racquets in the past 12 months). For me, where I am at the moment (3.5 adult rec player) I have decided that my racquet of choice for now is the Prince Synergy 98. I didn't much like the racquet when I first tried it, but the more I played with it, and especially played with it exclusively, NOT switching around, the more I came to truly appreciate its unique character that seems to suit my style. So....I went out and bought a second one......and a stringing machine....and this is MY reason for having more than one of the same racquet---the ability to test different strings side by side, or the same string, but at a different tension or a different gauge one right after the other. So far, Volkl Ctclone 17g @50lbs is my winner (17g RPM Blast, 18g V-Square, and 18g Black Widow are the losers so far for me)

For most players (scratch that ... all players), consistency is one of the hardest things about the game of tennis. And so I agree that it makes sense to try to reduce the variables as much as you can. I am still using my duster of an old Pure Drive Cortex 2006 because I simply haven't been able to demo enough other racquets to feel comfortable investing in a matched pair yet. The flip side of that though is that if you're not breaking strings, you're essentially going to be stringing one racquet just to sit there and slowly lose tension and so by the time you might actually pick it up it's likely not very much like your main racquet anyway in terms of tension. Just a though. Maybe I am overestimating the tension loss at rest. I used to break strings quite often but since I moved to Tourna Big Hitter Blues, I pretty much never break them unless it's a shank. Sort of feels bad but I think the big hitter blues are just super durable. 🤷
@TennCom Жыл бұрын
with poly's, most of the tension loss occurs in the first few days, so i dont think its too bad to just have one racquet sit in your bag. Still, I prefer to alternate sticks until they both feel bad and then i will string them both

Possibly the answer is "it depends". It depends on how long does it take your racquet restringing. For me it is from 3 days to a week, since my stringer's shop is on the other end of the town. Plus, it depends also whether you like to try out new strings. Especially when you don't like them you are either stuck with them or forfeit a couple of playing opportunities during restringing (If you have only one racquet). Plus, I have a doubles racquet (as a third one), same frame with heavier configuration. (Yes, you don't like the idea but doubles is a different game, a kind of glorified pickleball, requiring different strokes).

The answer is technically “no”. But if life depended on finishing a match and you break a string, then yea. My take is that it’s nice to have back ups, especially in texas where summers are brutal and impossible to keep grip dry over a set much less a whole match. Having multiple options is nice and fun for me. It’s hard to appreciate a single raquet if that’s all you ever play with. Remember your tool is part of the tennis. Pro Riders dont ride the same type of bike in tour the France all the time either.

My favorite racket is the speed mp, it is a fair combination of everything you need and nothing is lacking. I am using hyper g in the mains and switching between round polys on the crosses for a bit more control. Trying to find a cheaper alternative to hyper g because I fairly play often, sometimes 3-4 times a week. When it goes down in tension i find myself hard to control the power, that is why i restring it often.

I subscibe to both concepts, I have two of same the frames (Exone Tour 98) strung the same in case of a broken string. This has happened and threw me out of my groove during a match that I was cruising along in ,and had to switch to a different racquet and lost my groove. But I also do have a different racquet (Gravity Pro), and I pull that out when I'm struggling, and have to change the channel. It's a desperation move that works sometimes.

I really don’t need a second racket, but I have one mainly just to intimidate my opponents 😉😂. For this purpose I ideally like to have same strings, same overgrips, … though secondary purpose is to experiment with different strings.

Literally thought of having a racquet for big hitters vs pushers. As a 3.5 I ran into a 3.5 that could serve 110mph and yeah, my 220g setup was not enough to return those serves.

How was his groundstrokes? If he's serving 110mph he must have good technique and should really be a 4.0. I added 8 grams of lead to make it more stable against bigger hitters.

I almost always have 2 identical rackets. Every now and again I wasn’t able to or had to borrow another racket and I played worse. Could be mental but I don’t think so. I borrowed a Babalot once and could barely get the ball to the net no matter how hard I swung but with my prostaff I can hit a ton. Probably nothing wrong with that babalot but it didn’t work for me. I know players who belong to the multiple different racket theory and I usually win if we are otherwise evenly matched. They switch rackets and do worse.

I have 3 speed pros, one PS97, one pure strike, one six one 100, and an eZone 98. Ideally I would like to sell everything but the Speed pros but I get attached to frames! And every now and then pull one out to play a set with. I will likely sell everything but 2 speed pros and the PS97. Keep it simple

Nothing is worse than having string break with no back up. While strings are more durable, all it takes is a good shank near the frame. I find Yonex quality control is close enough, no need for a matched pair. Plus having a second racket lets you play around with different set ups. I prefere to have a second of the same racket as I don't want to have to adjust to the racket, I just want to keep my strokes consistent and play.

@jorgetirado3201 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree with your perspective, it really depends on what you're trying to accomplish. I fall in the trying to improve my game side, but spent this winter going through a racquet journey. I landed on the Shift 315, which is fairly beefy (328sw) which has been great for my singles game; however, I'm considering keeping a Shift 300 in my bag for those third sets when arm fatigue starts to set in, or maybe even for doubles since I'm having a hard time with quick reaction points with the 315. Does that seem like a sound plan? Or if I just want to focus on getting better, will that set me back w/ my muscle memory if I'm switching to a lighter racquet for doubles?
@rf10is Жыл бұрын
I personally use the same racket at lower tension if im tired, same racket with a slightly lower swingweight could work too

Haven't watched the video, commenting based on title. Are you a casual infrequent player? Then NO you don't. Play at least a few times a week? Don't want to get stranded and have to borrow a friend's stick (if they have one you can use) when you pop strings? Then YES you NEED at least one backup racquet. I always have three on hand. One can be in the shop getting strings leaving you with two racquets. Then if you happen to pop one of those you can still keep playing.

I would have 3 if I were you. I have three and I'm a tournament player. You never know when a string will pop and if the second racquet loses tension or you pop that string you are in trouble. I've had two for the last several years but when my racquet went on sale I picked up a 3rd and it has really put my mind at ease a few times. Also, you don't have to rush to restring one of your racquets if you still have two in your bag.

Certainly I choose my racket and stick to it for a loooong time (approx. 10 years) There are always seducing videos which make me wish a new racket. but changing racket is not an enjoyable process like in the beginning when buying the new weapon. it takes time! 2.more rackets? yes but help me god! NOT a different modell. I have 2 rackets in my bag. (😂as a clubplayer, I use my 1st racket for 2 months, then this racket becomes my backupracket for another 2 months and my new strung backupracket becomes my first racket) a I own a 3d racket (same modell) unstrung at home. Boring I know! As mentioned in the video: Tennis is a hard sport. Its hard enough to find the best setup. after that you adapt and the racket becomes your weapon you trust. job done;) (Among the individual benefits a player might generate it is for sure not helpful for us to copy every habit of a professional.player especially when we know that they carry 5 rackets in their bag, and have them restrung after every match, at least once a week even if not not hitting one ball,...)
