Who will win in a battle between the DJI RS2 Gimbal and 4 different stabilization modes on the Sony a7siii: Standard IBIS, Active Stabilization, Catalyst Browse, and no stabilization. In this video, we'll tackle the question of Gimbal vs IBIS in a series of tests running, walking, and standing still.
Thanks to @Moment for supplying the DJI RS2 for this video.
Check out the RS2 here → geni.us/dji_rs2
*Update* - I misspoke at 4:25, the sony a7c DOES NOT have active stabilization (but it does have gyro data for catalyst browse)
* Clarification* - The Gimbal shots were taken with stabilization turned off. Yes you can combine this with IBIS.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. In early December I sent my gimbal out for repair naively assuming I would get it back by late December... sure it will return before any critical shoots. So flash forward to a major shoot and a brand new A7s3 in my hands... and no gimbal. But everything was supposed to be walking and talking. I crossed my fingers and leapt into the abyss. Granted I had a cage and an extra handle from SmallRig. But I also have a persistent tremor in my hand. In the end I was pleasantly surprised that MOST of the footage was quite useable...but most still needed extra help in post. Some needed a lot. I learned enough to know that I will never (EVER) shoot a project like that without a gimbal again. But I was left wondering about wether I should have gone the Catalyst route. It appears from your review I made the right choice. Thank you for the excellent life-reaffirming breakdown. (Hitting SUBSCRIBE). ❤️ from your new 🇨🇦 friend.

Great video as usual man - loved the ‘characters’, very creative 😂. I’ve used Catalyst Browse with the Sony a7C and I agree that it’s super annoying to have to crank up the shutter speed to get good results. However, the results in terms of stabilisation look amazing if you do put the shutter speed up - but rendering through Catalyst Browse also takes an age, so it isn’t really useable in general. I also have a gimbal (Zhiyun Weebill S) and I love the results, but absolutely agree that they stand out in walking/running, but look pretty bad when you are stood still haha.

Note: If you use Active Steadyshot for stabilizsation of moving camerashots, you need to increase the shutter speed (min 3 times faster or more as ususal). The "motion blur" (you name ist so) with active steadyshot ist responisble for the "motion blur / jitter " from the ibis and far too slow shutter speed. Crank the shutter speed up, the image stabilization will boost the quality.

My experience has been about 50/50 on the jello issue. I generally shoot with some kind of stabilization on and for some shots, I can toss on post stabilization no problem... for others... jello city. Definitely better on the a7siii with the reduced rolling shutter though.

Thanks for the nice comparison. That helps me a lot, even although I already have a gimbal (Ronin SC). Great reality check. All I would be wondering for is now -- as I don't have IBIS: How well would IBIS work combined with the gimbal? I did notice that some of my canon lenses that have image stabilization worked great to make the Ronin SC even smoother especially for walking and running. Almost looks drone-like then. However the very slight wobble of the Gimbal can also be corrected in post without too much trouble. It's just even nicer if it's super smooth already out of the camera. Too bad really fast lenses (which I love to use) usually don't have IS.

Awesome! I dont have a gimbal. But can you use IBIS and a gimbal for extra stability or would they fight each other? Thanks for getting cold and running in the woods
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 3 жыл бұрын
You can definitely combine them and I usually do! The gimbal gives you that super smooth motion and the ibis removes the little shakes. However. When panning, sometimes ibis can cause funny shifting at the end of a pan. So you just need to be careful with that.

Honestly I think you were a tad unfair to Catalyst Browse. As you were expecting it at least hoping for an impossible task. The motion blur is baked into the source footage. So the faster shutter should more or less be an expectation when going for truly stable footage using handheld + catalyst. You could then throw RSMB on top and likely have some amazing looking footage. Still an incredible video though!
@david.stachon
@david.stachon 3 жыл бұрын
I've been experimenting with stabilization on my a7siii where my primary use case is shooting ringette on-ice (with skates on and in the action). This requires lots of fast panning (which your tests didn't cover). But the best results were doing all three of these: 1) Use a gimbal 2) Shoot at least 1/400th shutter speed 3) Do catalyst browse stabilization at 90% Unfortunately, using the ibis (and lens) stabilization when panning on a gimbal does some seriously weird jerks.
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a great point about panning! Panning accuracy can also be a lot easier handheld too so there’s a whole other set of pros and cons. And yea I’ve noticed some odd things when panning with ibis as well.

There's no stabilization anywhere in that rig... and it's HEAVY! I bought a Zhiyun Weebill-S on eBay to use in lieu of IBIS. It's been working really well for me and packs nicely. I shot at 24fps 1/50 shutter speed as normal i didn’t cranked up the shutter speed and the result are super good. @@dunnadidit very strange, i never turned off steadyshot, and i can see definitely the stabilization. It is extremely obvious. Walking video are like not good, and after it is acceptable but now by looking very closely on my 4k 32 inch screen i can see a small amount of motion blur during the most step shaking. It is stabilized very well but the small bluriness during intense shake as micro seconds reduce the quality of the footage. This is what could be corrected with higher shutter speed. I need more test. For sure a gimbal for walking would be the best to go, to not have any post processing. I need to make test at 1/100 shutter speed to see if the micro blur disappears, except that the video would be very good. I will explore more.

I would need to shoot at 1/100 to see if there is improvement, and if i could keep auto mode and maximum stabilization to remove the micro bluriness completely.

I’m at 2:46. I think Active Stabilization is going to be perfectly acceptable. Even indistinguishable from the gimbal. But you’re going to say the gimbal is still better. That’s what I’ve gotten from these tests in the last few videos. Everyone says the gimbal is still best……but I see a negligible difference.
@airavearentertainment9186
@airavearentertainment9186 2 жыл бұрын
I was wrong. There is a noticeable improvement with the gimbal. The active stabilization is good enough that I would use it in any case that didn’t absolutely need a gimbal. I just started using a ronin s and at the events I’ve shot I always end up ditching it by the end. (Probably because I haven’t mastered it yet.) I hate that if I need to change lenses I need to rebalance it. Then, at a wedding I shot two days ago, it just started vibrating. Luckily I had time to turn it off and get the camera off so I could get the shot. At another even i shot a couple weeks ago, a different gimbal just decided it didn’t want to turn on. We spent 20 mins messing with it. So the gimbals have just not grown on me yet….

Haha this is like going to the soda machine and making a drink with all the flavors. Unfortunately you can’t combine active stabilization and catalyst browse stabilization. Stabilization needs to be turned off to use catalyst browse. However, you could combine standard ibis + gimbal, active ibis + gimbal, or you could use catalyst browse + gimbal (by turning off ibis and doing it in post) so there are more options but I just tried to show the most important ones since you can probably guess how combining them would work by looking at them. Maybe next time I’ll just do all the possible combinations and let the video be twice as long haha.

I did it with ibis off. I forgot to mention it in the video so it’s a note in the description 🤦🏻‍♂️. That said, I was really impressed with how stable it was regardless. This is a good indication for people that have cameras without any kind of ibis (a6100, a6400 etc) Unfortunately I haven’t had the chance to use the rsc2 yet but I’ve heard they perform fairly similarly, I think the big difference is weight and compactness.
