Bonus: I also learned recently why when you turn off the OIS switch on the 18-55 on the X-T4, it also turns off IBIS on the camera. It baffled me for so long, why IBIS wouldn't just kick in and treat the lens as non-OIS. But this is why - because when you put it on a tripod, you would need a quick and effective method to turn off all stabilization.

From my experience, I can say that for IBIS to work, it is very important to set the focal length of the manual lenses in the camera settings. Improperly set focal length for manual lenses degrades IBIS performance a lot. Properly set focal length greatly improves performance.

@@austinprice770 not sure 100% but I think when you plug a Fuji lens into your body camera (fuji as well), the camera recognizes the focal length automatically.

@premyslvavrousek
@premyslvavrousek Жыл бұрын
@@antoinecarpentiers7807 Of course - with any autofocus lens (not only from Fujifilm), it transmits the focal length automatically. I'm writing about manual glass, where you need to set the focal length in the camera settings for IBIS to work correctly for that focal length.
@premyslvavrousek
@premyslvavrousek Жыл бұрын
@@flashsam291 For example on my X-S10 it is the last item, the last subpage of the IQ menu - MOUNT ADAPTOR SETTING. No settings are needed for autofocus lenses. For manual lenses, it is always a good idea to change the current focal length for each glass. Firstly, this is written into the EXIF data of the photo and secondly - if the camera has IBIS, it can only work properly with the correct focal length.

One thing to note on the mention of stabilization in post production is that motion blur is not easily removed, so preventing motion during the exposure of each frame using IBIS and/or OIS will produce better results. Obviously, the higher the shutter speed, the more you can reduce motion blur, but it's generally favourable to have some 'good' motion blur for the appearance of smooth motion, using a shutter speed of double the captured frame rate for example.
@Surmoka

True dat. Moreover, stabilization in post-process is a lossy process, whereas OIS/IBIS are not.

@professionalpotato4764

In theory you could almost do that. It's just pretty hard. Olympus almost got there which is very impressive. Panasonic's a close second. However nothing will replace gimbals. Tiny magnets will never match the torque of real motors.
@root9065
@root9065 3 жыл бұрын
Gimbal is on a multi-axis hinge... that has so much more ample stabilization capabilities to cancel your own ample movements, than a few millimeters travel which is what your OIS /IBIS has to spare... all things considered, OIS+IBIS are doing a pretty mind-blowing job. The only thing that comes close to a gimbal is electronic stabilization on high end smartphones, because basically it works with a larger resolution sample, straightens the frame and dynamically crops out the "extra" thus stabilizing the image much like a gimbal.

Good informative video, I'm considering getting a x-t4 or h2s in the future but my 80mm macro OIS is loud as a train and it ruins any video i take with it, OIS off and IBIS on seems to be the solution. the 30mm macro lens wouldn't be as useful for video as I want the working distance

My 10-24mm with OIS worked perfectly with X-T2 both for photo and images. However, with X-T4 and IBIS, there is bad warping going on, even when the camera is still, so footage is not usable, have to turn off all stabilization for wide shots. I wish there was a way to turn off IBIS and only use lens OIS, but that does not seem to be possible.

Is it just my impression that ois and ibis just works when I am not walking. When I just walk a little I can see theugly wobbling effect. I think that the communication of Ibis and ois doesn't work well. With the viltrox lenses it's much better because only IBIS is working. Where are all the firmware updates? Before I switched to fuji they always said fuji is strong with making the cameras work better with firmware updates?

Chris, many thanks for this excellent video; it answers a lot of my questions about the Fuji IBIS system. But here's one more. On Fuji's own specs page for the XT4, it states that IBIS works in "video mode only." Is this correct. For still photos at a long focal length and a slow shutter speed, I'd certainly want IBIS. Can you comment? Again, many thanks. OOPS! I just saw your other video, which answers this question. No need to reply. Thanks.

Hi, I love your channel. Could you comment on the IBIS-related fan-like humming noise problem in the X-T4 and, I guess, also in other IBIS Fuji cameras? I just bought a used X-T4 and noticed this noise. In a quiet room, it is audible and is recorded by the internal microphones on the film. I found user statements on DPReview and Reddit that this is normal. Even statements from Fuji support were quoted. Is indeed this noise a normal phenomenon? I haven't seen any review so far that mentions it.

good work man ... obvious IBIS is better ... OIS can not have stabilization of rotation ... sorry my bad english ... overall great video ... i think you are the best "technician-actor-joker-man" on line, talking about fuji movies ... a good camera x-t4 ... but I think the problem of x-t4 are ... 1 focusing video ... tracking objects is absent (Canon RP cost half but have ... and track a finger-selected object or area is less difficult in firmware than track a random position of face and eyes) ... 2 the AEL function ... work in aperture A ... DO NOT WORK in ISO A (and fixed aperture and time obviously) ... 3 noise of lens motor even this can be overtaked by external mic ...... bye

Thanks again for very useful info. One thing that wasn’t covered is the shutter speed. I’ve been told at high shutter speeds OIS and IBIS doesn’t have enough time to work. And it may make the pic worst. What’s your opinion on this? I think the speed at which you shouldn’t use it is 1/250. My memory could be wrong on that number. Always appreciate your helpful info!!!👏

One thing I haven't really "mastered" yet with IBIS is slow pans when filming B roll of, for example, a car. It is very hard to get one smooth shot moving slowly from left ro right or up/down. You can feel how the camera keeps trying to keep the original composition, without movement, and then jumps abruptly into the direction you are moving. It has been improved with firmware updates but with the Canon R5 or the GH5 I don't have these issues. Still :D I use a XT4 with the 16-55 and it is an absolute killer of a setup for hybrid shooting

Or 3 Viltrox56 + 7artisans 35 0.95 Later I will certainly buy TTArtisan 50 1.2 and other cheaper fast manual lenses. People, please help me. It is my first Fuji camera. I come from Canon Eos system!
@Vinterloft
@Vinterloft 3 жыл бұрын
Viltrox 56 + Viltrox *23* . If you are planning to use these for video you don't want the 33 as it has a LOT of LoCA. The 23 is much better and they all focus really quickly. The Viltrox 85 is made for full frame and so is much bigger and heavier, it also doesn't focus as well. So it can be a problem with cheap gimbals. One last thing, remember to firmware update all these lenses (USB port at the base) and your camera, so you will have the option to set AF sensitivity and speed in your menus, otherwise they will always snap focus at lightspeed which isn't usable for cinematic shots.
@professionalpotato4764

Viltrox 56 is a good choice. 23mm will complement it well for the 35mm/85mm pair look that wedding photographers love. Check your lightroom stats to see if you have lots of keeper shots in the 35mm look. Primes are very dependent on style. I personally HATE the 35mm look, so I'll never buy a 23mm lens for Fuji. I'm a 24mm and 50mm type of person.

And the other benefits from IBIS over in-lens OIS can’t be forgotten. Cameras that have astrotracer function built in like the Pentax K-1 use IBIS to stop star trails in long exposures plus straighten horizons automatically within small ranges and indeed the option of high resolution pixel shift images. Lack of IBIS in the X-E4 was my main concern when I decided to get it for street photography

I don't find interesting but rather reassuring that IBIS work as well on fuji and non-fuji lenses. The only way to make it better with a fuji without OIS, than any other brand is to artificially make it worst with the non-fuji lenses, in fact... Glad to see they didn't go that route.

And if you use a tripod with a video head using X-T4 you're on the go :-) Have a nice week-end !!

The XT4 stabilization is super effective, Thanks for making this video! Though I've had funky issues with lenses wider than 35mm on my copy. I get a lot of strange warping artifacts throughout the frame, even when the camera is completely still (with digital and IS boost turned off). It's as if the motor is overcompensating. Have you experienced something similar? If so, do you think Fujifilm is aware of this issue? Hopefully it can be fixed with a firmware update.

It a well known Fuji thing. Fuji is still pretty new at this whole IBIS thing. I use IBIS for locked off "tripod-look", but I turn it off for everything else. Also wide angles are generally harder to stabilize since the tiniest movement causes a huge shift in sensor/image plane. 16mm or 24mm fov is the widest I'd use with IBIS.

@@professionalpotato4764 would you say just forget IBIS and ois and just get a good $300 gimbal instead?

@@realMartinHamilton Yeah, just get a Weebill S or something for stabilization.

@@professionalpotato4764 Thanks for this !!!Just saved me a bunch of $$$ I have a X-T2 and need to use Ultra Wide Primes for Shoots , been kicking my head as to if the X-H1, X-S10 or X-T4 IBIS would be up for the job - for Stills id still like a X-T4 or now 5 :-))) but cant afford either now - so the Weebill S solves my issues... Thank you :-)
