I was in the camp of I was in a upper leadership role and I felt like I needed something to add to my resume as I was getting stagnant. Personally, I entered the Bachelors program in cybersec without knowing much about the field back in March 2020. Jump forward to today, I will be done with my bachelors in 4 months. I was admitted into the masters program and about 12 credits from my bachelors would count towards my Masters, so it was a no brainer. Most people harp down on not needing a degree to get into this field, which is valid to a certain point. I feel like this program introduced me to a variety of different options within the field and it also allowed me to become better at communicating thoughts and ideas. For example, should one just decide to go for certifications, great all for it, but you would probably miss out on learning other topics within this field. There are soooooo many paths to take and the one I chose allowed me to see that.

Have been considering MSIT (or cybersecurity secondly as an interest). Did 7/10 of MBA program online elsewhere they merged the online/irl classes when the pandemic happened and where I was wasn't equipped to stream classes despite claiming to be a tech savvy (ipad) uni, I finished that 8 week term and jumped ship. I did feel that moment when the pandemic hit that I was in the wrong degree, that I should have went for IT instead. Coming from a BBA in Accounting, the MBA I did online locally was an exact repeat of my undergrad but with writing more word requirement term papers. I can't say if the one here is the same, but coming from a BBA the MBA felt boring and less quantitative than accounting. I can see how not having b-school MBA could be appealing in that case. Not sure I want to go back into the grind, though am leaning MSIT if I did commit to it. I usually found in grad school I was time gated heavily even in 8 week sessions. I feel the MBA was overhyped. I took the GMAT and GRE previously and did okay on those but had no desire to retake to go to the state flagship. I had the MBA Marketing flavor, was discouraged from trying anything harder/more interesting like finance, really do feel the concentrations are flavors of the MBA electives, though I did actually like the weird different college journalism electives I ended up taking during MBA school and beating out some of the journalism students for best podcast one time. A lot of the MBA assignments were watching TEDx talks and typing as I listened/reacted. I felt like I've learned more online self studying. A part of me would rather build a new computer and upgrade my storage before I think about going back. I find I start eating through storage if any video/audio recording for presentations is required and well I would probably have to ask about the MBA IT also, though I wouldn't want to unless it was fast. It's hard to find programs for switching from business school undergrad usually, feel like I made a mistake in studying b-school earlier.

So I’m almost done with my bachelors in cybersecurity from wgu. I have 5 months of actual “IT” experience working as a data center technician but that’s it. I’m trying to transition into cybersecurity without any experience . Would me jumping straight into masters and getting it worth it? Like would it make me look cooler?😂 or increase the likelihood of me getting my first job with better pay? ( with projects of course)
@charliedallachie35393 жыл бұрын
Short answer: Not really. I was prepping for the GRE at one point until I did some more research into it. I decided the cost isn’t worth it. I was also considering a masters in business or something to round out the computer science degree which is good for management/director roles but it wouldn’t affect salary much. Maybe a 10% bump if that. Not worth the debt imo. Turns out I am still able to make significant salary bumps with each new job. Now If you’re rich or have the desire to learn go for it. Also some schools have combined bachelors masters programs, it’d be more worth it in that case. I ran into a few peers at my last job actually doing an online PhD in Cyber. Sounds cool but is it worth the money (50-80k?)It’s a personal decision I guess but it’s not needed. Another factor too is the field changes so fast, what you learn in school could be obsolete in 20 years. Tech wise I’d also look into AI, machine learning, automation etc since that’s probably going to be big over the next couple decades.

Hey Jonathan. I feel it's OFTEN the case that the manager is less technical than their direct reports. I'm really bad at managing humans (I don't like it), so I tend to not really get involved with that curriculum too much, but a manager is typically good at leveraging their reports strengths and removing blockers for them and relying on their technical expertise :)

Hey Adrian! Thanks for watching and commenting. This is just my opinion but I seldom recommend people to get a double bachelors. I also don't really recommend getting a Master's without experience since it's unneeded and just presents extra opportunity cost. I would recommend getting a security cert or two, perhaps CompTIA Security+ and TCM's PNPT cert. Then do a few labs (search "Josh Madakor cybersecurity projects"), make a portfolio, then just try to break into both IT and Cyber at the same time, and take whatever comes first. After you start getting the initial experience, just keep trying to make your way into whatever area you want to work in. Just my opinion though! When you do too many things at once, it kind of detracts from the whole, since extra mental energy is wasted when you're switching context too much. Just my opinion. You can get overwhelmed when you try to learn or do too many things at once. At least that is what happens to me. It also becomes more difficult to achieve mastery in certain skill areas when you try to learn so much at once. What ends up happening in that situation is you have this extensive breadth of superficial knowledge, but no depth. Depth is always better than breadth. Love your vidoes. I am finishing up my WGU BSIT this term and want to get the MSCIA. Better to get CISSP then the MSCIA or the other way around?

Cissp is way harder

They have some kind of alumni network, but I've never tried to use it to be honest :(. I don't think they have any direct links with any FAANGs or anything like this that I'm aware of. Check out WGU HandShake here: www.wgu.edu/career-services.html (ty for watching!)

If World would be Peaceful Place, then any Security for Business is extra weight and cost, who would want that? Now in other words, if Person sees benefits in studying then Great, i.e. in Belgium many Individuals has more than one Bachelor, that is cool, if You have money to Pay it out? Masters is for People who gonna go for the Education and be Educators. I guess, if You don't want do that, then...

Do you think it is worth to go for MBA in ITM from WGU for a person with 15 years of experience in Telecom domain working in IT company?

I’m just wondering is it okay to have two bachelor‘s degrees from two different fields from WGU?

You forgot when your parents are paying for your masters and just kinda force you into it after grad lol

Lol that sucks, but kinda nice at the same time lol. I'm down for an all-expenses-paid masters :D
@ls60973 жыл бұрын
No. You need certifications. My master's degree was only good in the sense that some of the classes I took turned me onto the niche or niches I wanted to focus on. Which is basically what a bachelor's degree is supposed to do.

Great comment. I agree :) Taking random classes really shows you "what's out there" and can really help in the sense that you get exposure to stuff you normally wouldn't have known existed. Thanks for taking the time to bring this up!

Does it look better to have a BS and MS from different schools?

I've heard this before, but I don't believe it to be true. I don't see how this would matter like 99% of the time tbh
Which one you recommend between university of Arizona and WGU
@JoshMadakor3 жыл бұрын
Do you mean the online one? I looked at ASU before and I even considered going there, but I felt it was too expensive compared to WGU and I didn't want to spend that much time and money. I definitely don't doubt the curriculum though!

So you have to obtain the cert to pass the class?
@JoshMadakor3 жыл бұрын
In most cases yes. Not all classes are like this, but there are some classes that require a cert to pass. I think this is good because it ensures curriculum stays aligned with real-world topics (for the most part).

Don't waste the money, it doesnt help. As some one who has a masters and still doesnt even make six figures. Companies only care about experience. Even if you plant your ass in that seat every day and do nothing it doesn't matter as long as you have ten years on your resume.
