Do you really need to practice with native speakers? And does it matter whether your teacher is a native speaker? This video explains whether or not I believe it is important to learn and practice speaking English (or any language) with native speakers.
I'm Teacher Mike, and I'm an English (ESL/EFL) teacher from the United States.
I'm currently posting 3 videos each week (Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday)(Tuesday is a LIVE video), so if you're interested in improving your English, make sure to subscribe and turn on notifications so that you see all of my new videos.
Also, my ebook "How to Practice Speaking English by Yourself and Why Everyone Should Do It" is finally available to people in countries that don't have Amazon!

I've just now been in Austria for a week and I've realized so hard is to speak and understand to native speakers but I'm glad because I've understood them better this year. It means that your classes are really useful for me. Thank you teacher.😊

You are a very responsible teacher. I respect that a lot. The main conclusion from this lesson for me is that it is not necessary to practice speaking with a native speaker. The most important thing is to practice speaking regardless of whether I practice with a native speaker or not. Thank you very much for this lesson.💚

It"s absolutely true. To musterEnglish with professional experienced non-native speaker is even better than to learn from native speaker.There are so many sources to practice English nowadays. It"s good to have a native speaker as a pen-friend, but it's not a "must" to practice only with a native speaker. The main thing is to have a professional teacher and do your best to learn to reach your goal. reach reach

I agree with everything you said except for the part where you said that it's "better" to practice with a non-native speaker. There are a few situations where it's better to have a native speaker, and there are a few situations in which it's better to have a non-native speaker, but overall, I don't think either one is really better.

Thank you so much , Mike !! This video speaks highly of you . There’s this “Teacher Lao” or something like that who is constantly saying : if they taught you this in English clases..they were wrong!!” All the time looking down on non native English teachers…it really gets on my nerves every time I watch her videos ..I’ve been an EFL teacher for almost 40 years now and I guess many times I know more about grammar and especially phonetics than a native speaker…I got my teaching degree at the Pedagógico de Caracas after five years!! So it’s really annoying that an American “teacher “ goes out there saying to people : hey! What they taught you in English classes was nonsense ..well that’s the message she conveys if you read between the lines..thank you !

There are lots of non-native teachers who teach stuff that is completely wrong, but there are also native speakers who teach stuff that is completely wrong. That's why it's important to choose a teacher based on their competence, not on what their first language is. And I think it's appropriate to tell people that what they've learned is wrong, but HOW you do it is important.

Hi, Teacher Mike. Thank you for this insightful video. Regarding native and non-native teachers, I think it’s better to learn from teachers who are native speakers because they can explain slang, culture, and many things that we can't fully understand unless we live in the country where the language is spoken.
@TeacherMikeEnglish
@TeacherMikeEnglish 5 күн бұрын
I understand why you think that, but my neighbor is a non-native English speaker, and she has lived in this country longer than I have been alive. She can explain culture just as well as I can. So that isn't always true. Anyone can live in a country, learn about slang, learn about culture, etc. Not only native speakers. 😃

I find it, vocabularies are the most important part for speeking , so i memorize them . any way when we choose someone as parent language for practice , she mustn't weak of me til , this way can help to me for learn vocabulary, grammar, pronounciation and etc... more over native english can be bad or good for me . If some one speek quickly without attention to learn me , this will be bad for me , but someone learns new vocublary, grammar... this is good for me . I have had two stitutions . I think this subject can be trrible or excellent for learners.

Thanks for a new, very valuable video! For me, it doesn't make a big difference if a conversation is with a native speaker, or with experienced non-native English teacher from Poland. In some situations it is even easier to communicate with a person, who isn't a native English speaker, but has practice in teaching English.

Mr. Mike, I am facing a problem with using phrasal verbs, not in terms of memorizing them but understanding them. I tried searching on the internet, but there isn't any content that explains how to use phrasal verbs. For example, what are the meanings of "up" when added to a verb, and so on. Could you please help me? thank you.
