After watching more than 10 of your videos overtime, I suscribed to your channel Elioth, I really appreciate your work. To me this modern RP accent is the easiest to understand. However I know i will never master it and will end up sounding "internationnal" at best. I am fine with that. I started english at 25 years old and as a french person prononciation isn't a piece of cake. When I talk, after a certain amount of time, my brain tends to focus less on prononciation. Most people still struggle to guess where I am from and I am already fine with this result. Hopefully my children will aquire a better english than me :) Anyway, keep up the good work, you're a very good teacher !

Hey Elliot, Could you please explain how to pronounce when one word is ending in 't' and the next begins with 'th'. For example, "But then". Also, when a word ends with 'd' and next word begins with 'th'. For example, "I told them". I see actors doing it on screen and try to repeat after them, but can never get the pronunciation right.

So what is the relation between /ə/, /ʌ/ and /ɜː/ besides vowel length?
@ETJEnglish2 ай бұрын
the first two sounds are shorter, and as explained in the video, the /ʌ/ is more open than the schwa. The /ɜː/ sound is also a bit more open than the schwa and it's long (making it completely different from both of them). They are all fairly similar in terms of what we are doing with the mouth, however the slight opening of the jaw or change in lips can change a sound dramatically, hence they all sound different from each other. The schwa is what I call a "helper" sound because it's very neutral and we can use it to find the articulation of other vowels.
@KittQB2 ай бұрын
@@ETJEnglish Can we say then, when we try to pronounce the /ɜː/ as /əː/ we will be closer to perfection than trying it as /ʌː/?
@ETJEnglish2 ай бұрын
@@KittQB try to pronounce them using their own sounds. They are all different and should be studied separately. Simply use the schwa as a start position, to help you find the finish line. Every sound is different and it's better not to make up a new sound.
