Do You REALY Need The BMW M8? 2023 BMW M850i Review

In my 2023 BMW M850i review, I'll tell you why this is the best daily 2023 BMW 8 Series trim that you can buy. Like the BMW M8 Competition, the M850i is also powered by a 4.4L twin-turbo V8. The M8 Competition sits at the top of the BMW 8 lineup with 617-hp while the BMW M850i makes 523-hp. You also have the entry level BMW 840i with 335-hp. So which BMW 8 Series should you go for? Let's find out.
The model I tested here is the 2023 BMW M850i Convertible. With a beautiful exterior design, this thing turns heads everywhere it goes. It might not be BMW M8 Competition quick, but its still plenty powerful as a daily driver. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the BMW M8 Gran Coupe, but the BMW 850i provides plenty of power and luxury for a lower price tag. The BMW M850i price starts at $102,500 while the M8 Competition starts at $134,100 - which is a pretty significant difference. Is that extra $32,000 worth it? Let's take a look. Had the 2020 M8 Comp... recently switched to the 2023 m850 gran coupe... Needed a more comfortable car. It was a tough decision because I thought it wouldn't be anywhere near as good, but the m850 is fantastic. The perfect mixture between luxury and sport. Did the same thing with my x4 m comp... got rid of it because of how stiff and uncomfortable that car is. Even in its most comfortable settings. Traded that in for an M340 which will be here in a month. Excited about that thing. I thought I was downgrading but am I?

I would 😆 you can put the piggy back software tune, that u can buy at the BMW dealership, and have the factory warranty......

I have heard that the M8 comp is a really harsh ride for a daily driver so I would opt out for the M850. Since it is $50,000 less at $100 k than the M8 and the M8 is only .6 sec faster. The M850 is a better bargain.

Thanks for your review. I "want" the M8 Comp for two reasons, I've never owned a true "M" car and the car is crazy powerful, however, my practical side says the M850i will truly suit me and used one easier to obtain. Your review has helped me to take a more serious look at the M850i

Just got an 2023 M850 coupe in 6 months ago. Everything you said about this car it 100% true. BEST car I ever owned and so comfortable...Actually more throatier than the M8 Competition.

wait for 1 year. Then you will see - every 2nd month in repair shop. Engine leak, cooling system leaks (service man said - I need to change 1 hose, its's 50 euros. FINE .. then 50 eur for the hose .. AND 300 eur for the labor changing it). Then gear box leaks ... then .. what? SELL it, get life - that's it.

Omar, you can do what I did and find one on the used market. I got a 2019-850I, and it is the best car I've ever owned. I'm only a week and a half in and I. Completely in love. I wasn't expecting my wife to really take to it as well as she did. But there was a day when she basically kidnapped me and my car and took over. It was awesome. It appears to be a rock solid car that I don't have to compromise, comfort for performance. It is a great daily driver. You can take to the office and ECO mode, and not burn up all the gas in the tank, then go out and blow some steam on the weekends in sport plus, and draw all kinds of attention. By the way, this is an attention getter when you pull up in this vehicle, it is a showstopper, even at the BMW dealership, and they sell this car.😁 One of the things that came up during my warranty check, because I just got it with some warranty left, is according to the folks at the dealer, apparently this is still a rare car. They're not many of them on the road, which also is pretty cool. I made some comments on my channel, not a promotion, just an invitation. If you wanna take a look on my first couple days of ownership. Ohh and unlike your review car, I have the standard Harman Kardon, as opposed to the Bower Wilkins. And they sound amazing. I was. Is genuinely surprised coming from the car was in with the 30 plus speakers, how great the sound is in this car. It really has a nice, rich bottom in. The driver assist is pretty good, which, again, I couple that with the ECO promote to save on fuel during the week. I've owned some nice vehicles. I just traded in my Cadillac CT6 platinum for this car, And it is. And it is a world away from the caddy. And that's Saying a lot. The back seats are more of a suggestion so. That is not the car for you if you needed to haul people around my boys, have their own cars, just me and the old lady. You'll have to drive your own car. Lastly, The exhaust notes on this car are a symphony. Pull up somewhere in sport mode, and you might as well have a parade.

I would definitely cut out the expensive clothing and only eat beans & rice to get myself into an M8, if only that were the case haha. I'm sure anyone with the money is going to go with the M8. More aggressive, more power, the subtle style accents and just that little bit more of everything make the 30k totally worth it as an enthusiast's car. I haven't seen very many M8's on the track yet but that'll change in a few years when they become more affordable, you see plenty of M6's tearing up the track these days. It's crazy what these large and heavy cars are capable of with such great engineering

I'm picking up an M850i sometime next week. I didn't want to spring for the M8 because I didn't want another aggressive track-focused car. The M850i seems like the best balance for a high-end daily. Appreciate the review!

@@execatty - It's a pretty big car, you feel it, but it's also amazing. Super comfortable, loaded with tech, and that V8 has plenty of instant torque. The back seats are a joke so don't expect to fit anyone comfortably back there, that's probably the only real drawback but everything else is what you'd expect from a high-end GT car. If you can spring for the M8 go for it, but the M850 isn't much of a compromise, great car and I recommend it highly. I'd get the parking assist package if possible, really helps with maneuvering in tight spots because, as mentioned, it is a pretty big car.

Thanks Omar for your comments. Was looking for a more comfortable, yet have good performance. Went « crazy » some years ago with a Ferrari California T (Ferrari’s answer for a sport cruiser). But in order to respect the Ferrari heritage, the California T had to remain more « sport/track ready » than « comfort cruiser ». I guess after 6 yrs of ownership, I wanted to go back to more comfort for long cruise options (and updated technologies). Settled my choice with the M850i as suggested and loving it… and the wife wants to drive it more (she didn’t want to touch the Ferrari). Even better for long hauls (having a 2nd driver). Like other commentators, our « kids » are older and have their cars as this is NOT a family car. It is our summer toy for 2. Wouldn’t go back and enjoying it as much as I can. Ended up with the skyscraper grey/Ivory interior/black trim/grey top package. Last comment, the interior is surprisingly well « sound proof » with the top closed. Wasn’t expecting as good sound proofing as this is my 1st soft top convertible. Your comments steered me in the right direction for my needs/taste. Thanks.

Nice review. The 8 series is beautiful, so glad they aren't adding the hideous buck tooth/walrus/stupid grill on some models. Sadly to me, this would make a great second car if your pockets are really deep, not that practical for a daily driver. For such a huge car the rear leg room is not good enough. It should have enough luxury for four to cruise comfortably with roof up or down. Both Mercedes S Class Coupe and E Class Coupe ticks that box perfectly.

The "non real M cars" getting the same mirrors as legit M cars is a huge fuk up by BMW. Those mirrors along with the quad exhausts were what separated M owners from the pack. Now owning my X6M Comp feels worthless

Grow some perspective Omar. The current 8 Series is nothing more than the next generation 6 Series with an 8 slapped on its behind so that MSRP can inflate to 6 digits. The grille is modeled from Dame Edna's glasses, the rear seat is uncomfortable for anything larger than a Dachshund, and the "crystal" used throughout the interior looks like those glass ashtrays your Aunt Irene had all over her home. Go look at the original e31 8 Series - it is magnificent 35 years after it was designed. This car willl be cancelled for lack of interest...just wait.

No it isn't. I own both a 650i gran coupe and a 850i xdrive coupe. They are different cars. Not just because the number of doors, the drive dynamics are different, the steering is different, the power dynamics are different. Even the ride comfort is different. I love them both, this is simply not true.

Don't buy. BMW is not what it used to be. Yeah, looks great .. but no reliability. Not any more. Just pay and pay and wait and pay and wait and pay in the repair shop.
