Do You Remember Heck's Department Store? A Store History.

Heck's Department Store, a chain of West Virginia based discount department stores, was founded by Boone County natives and businessmen Fred Haddad, Tom Ellis, and Lester Ellis and wholesale distributor Douglas Cook. The Heck's name was a combination of the names Haddad, Ellis and Cook. Haddad served as president, Lester Ellis was vice-president, and Tom Ellis was Secretary-Treasurer.

We used the Teays Valley Heck's a lot. I particularly loved Christmas shopping at Heck's, I would save my Christmas spending money all year and was able to buy everyone on my list something nice at Heck's.

I worked at the Heck’s in Frankfort, Kentucky. I was there until they closed the doors in 1988. Walmart essentially ran us out of business, in addition to the poor management. That experience cured me from ever wanting to work in retail or for the public ever again.

Oh also got confused with hecths and heck’s also hello Eric I have two department store request for as I wait for the Bon Ton store history to come out. Can u do history of Best Department don’t worry the store is called “BEST” if wondering. And the other one is called Boscov’s surprisingly this store still exist and both are mall department stores too. Have a fabulous day.

I’ve never been there before sadly because I live in GA so we don’t have boscovs in my state. I want to see it though one day. I am already mad I had my chance to see Bon Ton before it closed because I would have been old enough to see it. I have a question for u do think malls should get more respect with there department stores I definitely think so?

I worked at Heck's store #64 Sharon Pa, i think one of reasons was part of the economy in the early to mid '80's and the stores never really recovered

I'm from Morgantown wv. We had 2 Hecks locations and my Family never shopped there we favored Hills. My Grandmother was all in to Take 10. Just for the membership card with her picture still wasn't impressed. At the end With LA Joe the only remaining location in town it was just dirty. Big lots came in not long after. The store still held that Hecks vibe in the entrance. Big lots is still there

I used to go to the one in Keyser West Virginia and the one in Moorefield had these boots are locked I never been able to get them since they’re $29 a pair and it was a good deal

See if you can find any information on another regional discounter that went by the name of Harlows department store... They actually spelled Harlow's a little differently but I can't fully remember the spelling... However prior to that store becoming Harlow's it was known as seaway! See if you can find out any information on them I always heard that they were out of Wheeling and I know they had a store too in Northern Ohio but it was in the early 90s they closed the one in Newark Ohio and nobody's really heard anything out of them since... I myself have tried to conduct some research about them but can't really get anywhere!

So actually the real downfall of hacks is the debt that they took on see it has nothing to do with Walmart Walmart at that time in the midwest was not really a big deal! I live in Ohio and we used to have a heck store here interestingly enough the hack store went out before we ever got a Walmart! And yeah I am aware that Walmart was expanding I am aware that they may have been in the state of West Virginia as well as the Ohio region but what I'm saying is is they were not as thick as they are today and furthermore they really didn't sell half of what they sell today! So hex is downfall much like hills department store is of their own doing not because of competitors!
