So true, Omar. When we mistake style for substance and coolness for character, we end up with mediocrity. In life as well as in art.

This was hilarious! There's definitely a time and place for each sim. My default is Astia. It's pretty close to Provia but feels like it does skin tones and landscapes a bit better. I do like the newer Nostalgic Negative because to me it looks a lot like a color negative film. I use Velvia during golden/blue hour and Classic Chrome most at night. Classic Negative most during the holidays / winter. It makes those reds and greens come out in a very nostalgic way. Great video!

Astia is perfect for portraits. Creators try to overdo it with editing or spend too much time on it when they don't have to. Fuji's film sims are just right if you use them appropriately.

My design teacher told me that the hardest thing to do is a Black & White design. "You remove 1 channel from the audience, so you must make your artwork 10/10 in composition, and detail. But the job is much easier if you use colors. Now you just need to keep the composition and detail around 6/10 and good colors take care of the rest.
@nikolasisaafi8444 Жыл бұрын
I feel like so many art teachers say this but like removing a channel means you have less to worry about. You are now concentrating on texture and comp but if you nailed that and color isn't that harder? Also this always seems to come from people who's work is all black n white minimalism. Always reads as biased and dated to me.

B&W = light, form, and composition. I'm using it for a long-term project (Acros JPEG for the vewfinder + RAW for the post processing) where I have to make fast decisions and don't want to be distracted by color. This is with a variety of Fujifilm cameras, now mostly with a GFX50S II backed up with an X-T4 and X-E4.

I’m in my 2nd month of Fujifilm photography. I read thru each of the film simulations and decided to start with Provia. It was perfect from the getgo. I was getting the colors I was seeing and not having to muck with post. I’m amazed with it. However, I recently had a gray winter snowy day and decided to toss up Eterna Bleach Byoass. It was perfect for the lighting and the mood. My default setting remains Provia! This video is right on!

Walking into the world of proper cameras, you’re making the right choice that will help to hone your acuity to see the depth of dynamic range . And you’ll see how deeply Fuji’s color science can help a photo without resort to film sims. Chrome is worthwhile when you’re doing something high-key or with a lot of natural color depth, but you want to play up the detail in the object rather than the color variation (compresses the dynamic range)

To paraphrase Ansel Adams: there's nothing worse than a colorful image of a dull concept. I think "composition" and "subject" first, whether it's landscape, wildlife, architecture, or even family snapshots. (I hate the boring, posed group shots that my wife loves.) That skit, BTW, was hilarious. And I don't even shoot Fuji.

Sooooo good. This needs a stand-alone cut, to inspire a whole new genre of self-effacing photography humour. I love my Fuji gear, but have never actually loved the simulations. They tend to be muddy like you said and some require under- or overexposing the shot so far that even RAW images have issues. So to get finally really over the simulations I've made a very flat Pro-Neg Standard "simulation" so my viewfinder resembles as much a RAW image as possible (the histogram reacts to this, so when shooting with a simulation with a lot of contrast, it's not accurate by any means to the RAW image anymore). And because I like a bit of pain, I also edit with linear profiles instead of Fuji or Adobe profiles, so there's that 😂

That was a fantastic start to the vid mate. Very creative. Loved it. As for the topic of sims… seen many a photos being put out there only because of the film sims. 100% agree that a photos has to be interesting by itself and that the sim should just enhance the shot… rather than define it. Excellent! Provia is a great look. You did an awesome job with the PSA satire KZbinrs love to hate Provia. As if it were an amateur cheap default look, and not a real Film Sim. (It doesn't help that FujiFilm refers to it as "STD" in the menus, which implies Standard or S.T.D. - you take your pick) Provia was their best color transparency film, and a go-to for those that needed to have drum scans for fashion magazine and fashion catalog production. My film fridge was full of Provia 4x5 and Provia 120.

Great video Omar! Coming to this a bit late, but I can totally relate to this. Film sims are great, but I also feel they can be very distracting and get in the way of a good photos. When I first got my X-H2 I was always shooting in a film sim - Provia was just the boring standard colours and why would I want that?! Then I realised I was hiding behind them - I started to believe a mediocre shot was great because it had the classic chrome or nostalgic neg look. I've now got to a time and a place where every now and then a film sim really adds to the image, but aside from that I shoot a lot in Provia and tweedle it later if really want to change things up. Everybody is different though so there's no right or wrong, this is just where I've got to.

Yes, colors are life. I only shoot in Provia now. The other modes are interesting when the weather is gray or there are very few colors. Velvia is a bit too much, except perhaps for animals with bright colors. I'm not exactly sure about the difference between Provia and Velvia, but perhaps a Provia+ option could be found between the two that wouldn't make faces look tomato red. When I used to shoot film, I actually used Fuji films because even back then, Kodaks and others exasperated me with their dull color

So funny 😂 and true! When I got my Fuji, I only shot a couple of weeks on the “heavier” sims until my wife went “these photos don’t look like our holiday, they look like something from Instagram”. @Bossti Жыл бұрын
I think there is a layer missing here which is the feeling that a piece of artwork evokes and is meant to evoke. Take your example with the phone post: maybe the photographer was feeling really sad and lonely on that day and an isolated post of a means of communication was the subject that made all the sense in the world but the colors just don‘t fit. Muted colors or even black and white can help getting a certain mood and feeling across. I am working on a film simulation to give me that kind of Bladerunner/Cyberpunk aesthetic because I really like this mood and want to go out and shoot some neon reflections at night some time in such a style. It‘s not going to be my standard look of course. So always think about what kind of vibe, mood and feelings you want to transport with your images and chose accordingly. That being said: I don‘t like Provia and none of my settings are based on it 😂 Classic Neg is a helluva drug tho, I also stay away from that 😅
@NJM1948 Жыл бұрын
You are spot on with the "natural" look of images idea. I own 3 Fuji cameras and see the Film Sims as a gimmick. I have never ever used them....keep it in Standard (Provia I think) as I always shoot RAW and - correct me if I'm wrong - but they don't come over with the RAW file anyway, only as a JPG. I will always make an image look the way I want it. Firstly in camera with composition and exposure and then with post processing.
@Gallery90 Жыл бұрын
I hear ya. I've been doing a ton of B&W with my Fujis, but when I do color I start with the RAW and decide the look of the photo in post. Sims don't deliver that.

Great video as always Omar 😂 My perspective is that Fuji's color and rendering are a massive part of the reason to pick one up. Any camera can give clean colors. I also feel that for me as a hobbyist collecting memories, having the chance to bring character and story to an image through a film recipe, even when it isn't the finest composition, provides the kind of nostalgia that makes photographs worth keeping. It's why film has had such an incredible resurgence in recent years. I mean, "nostalgia" is in the name of some of these emulations ;-)
@TungstenOvergaard Жыл бұрын
Eres un genio! I’m fed up of simulations. Provia or Astia (= Provia more saturated) is my way to go. If there is any other look I need, in post. But 99% they prevail also in post. Let’s be real, and no nostalgic fake. But let’s be honest… B&W is the general ‘film simulation’ for dressing a bad photo nowadays.

I know that muddy green images of empty scenes symbolise the vapid meaninglessness of existence in a way that's reminiscent of the chemical imperfection of celluloid in a bygone era and all, but I can't handle any more of these telephone poles shot through a dirty car windshield with cheap sunglasses on, and chicken grease pro mists. I've actually started unsubbing from Fujifilm content that recommends Fujixweekly recipes, and moving over to Ricoh for street and doc content. Those guys are taking images of more than the sophmoric aesthetics of melancholic nostalgia. They don't know I haven't bought a Ricoh yet though. 🤫 All I can say is thank the lord for the EyeXplore Ricoh GR video in Asakusa for showing me that there's something else out there like me. 😂

When something niche becomes the mainstream and is all you ever see... And Eterna, what's with it? Isn't it supposed to be a good starting point for easy grading? It looks like a raw photo which no one would use without any edits but some people rave about it. All the pure Eterna footage I've seen and shot myself is just like a bland raw photo that's useless to use as is.

Omar! What happened to “all camera colors are lies”! Lol. But you make a fair observation. I basically shoot in astia, sometimes changing to provia or one of the acros sims. It’s when the image doesn’t work - when I get a lightpost -that I am tempted to try to save it by changing the sim to one of the others, or cropping drastically, or yanking the white balance to make it look like it was taken on planet neptune or something. I sometimes like these unintended art pieces a lot but it’s best to let them sit a week or two - if they still look good after that, great, keepers! But more often than not I’ll say, Nah, there’s nothing here. Them again, some of my “good” photos don’t look so good either after the emotions and memories are cooled down. I find it interesting and educational when I sit down to make some project like an annual photo book or new year’s card or calendar where there’s a limit or cost - that’s when I really identify the photos that hold up.

But I do try to see if I can get what I want straight out of camera so I will just tweak, tweak, tweak. Right now I kind of like Nostalgic Negative which I also tweak a little but I usually leave my camera in Provia with a few tweaks. I shoot jpeg and raw. I will pull out the raw file if I can’t accomplish what I want with the jpeg.
