My beloved mother wanted to sell a guest bed. A buyer came over to look at the bed and he said: it is embarrassing to buy a bed second hand. My mother answered: no one thinks it is embarrasing to sleep in a hotel bed where hundreds of people have already slept in. The man bought her bed. 👍

Back in 2021, we bought a van- it was a need with our growing family. We paid nearly half as a down payment, and then paid a few months. Then my grandma died and I got a $10,000 check in the mail. We paid off our van and had a few thousand leftover in the bank. Not having that debt hanging over our heads was amazing.

I’ve seen friends family members buy flat screen televisions when they first come out and were extremely expensive and then cry to parents they don’t have money for milk or diapers. They go on vacation then ask for house payment money. So they’ll blow their own money and then ask for money for necessities. It’s ugly blackmail because the friends don’t want their grandkids to not have milk or diapers.

Oh wow thank you for telling people about second hand. I live in a relatively affluent city, so i get almost everything from thrift stores or from various FB upcycle groups because all the affluent people are giving their things away and im scooping up whatever i need for pennies. Recently got a brand new Instant Pot for free from the upcycle site. I spend a little extra on groceries but the core is with clearance shopping, plus i belong to a FB helping hands page, people with extra food or stuff they can't use, put it onto helping hands and i get free food! Thank you for another wonderful video Emmie and Paul. Regarding gift giving: this is something I struggle with. I really hate the obligation to give gifts for holidays. As I've gone through a several years long decluttering journey, I've had a difficult time letting go of things that people have bought for me or made for me, but that I've never liked or used. I appreciate the gesture much more than the gift. I've struggled with how to bring up the subject of "no gifts", or "gifts of experience only". I don't need any more things. If I need something, I save for it and if I still want it, I buy it. I used to shop all year for little thoughtful gifts for people and noticed that they weren't used or needed or wanted. And then I left those people with a burden of decluttering🙃. In our family, we've tried various things: drawing names, doing something as a family, donating in a person's name to a charity, etc. But we've got people in our family whose love language is giving gifts. It's really difficult. I really dread this time of year for that reason😕
@LauraMacMillan-el2kc2 ай бұрын
Can you return them for cash? It sounds a big ungrateful maybe, I admit. But being burdened with possessions that you don’t want, can’t use, and have to caretake for the rest of your natural life doesn’t sound like it’s generating much gratitude either.

@@trishdonley945 perhaps tell them with everything going on in the world, you really have no need and would prefer no gifts this year. If they insist, then tell them to make a donation to a charity of their choice. We all have too much stuff and a lot of people are in need after all these storms.

I've learned to tighten down after months when I have had to spend heavily. I bought a newer car last month with cash after my mechanic advised me my old one was a danger to drive. With that and fall household repairs, having to buy a new wash machine, having had house guests, and unexpected vet bills for my cats, my monthly budget is shot! I paid all my bills but my checking account is really low. No problem...I just won't spend anything for the rest of the month! Other than buying gas for my car ( which I can cover by only driving the absolute minimum) I won't be spending any money...period! I have a well-stocked pantry and freezer so I won't even tempt myself by going to the store. I will focus on other fun household projects using what I have on hand. I don't see it as a hardship but as a fun challenge! I accomplished a lot and now have a reliable car, a house ready for winter weather, clean laundry, healthy kitties and had great visits with my overnight house guests! It was well worth a little belt tightening for the next 16 days!😊❤ I feel blessed!

We switched our cell phone carrier, eliminated an extended warranty plan on 2 newer appliances, I switched to husband’s health insurance carrier and we each got 10% discount, lowered our car insurance and got better coverage for our home too, we made real effort to cut our electric bill and last month it was 32% lower than last year! Our highest electric bill this Summer was $260. We have acclimated ourselves to thermostat setting of 79 by using stand up fan and ceiling fan and we run a dehumidifier all Summer. It keeps the air feeling more comfortable on our skin. We were able to apply and get approved for a foundation with Bristol Meyers that pays for my husband’s Eliquis ( saved $1700 a year). I grew up in a family of 7 and learned all about shopping second hand stores, raised my 2 children same way. Thanks for all your suggestions 🙂 8:43

I’ve never heard of this place. I wish you could share more. That was really a tease! Thanks for the sandwich idea. How I wish I had some of my summer vegetables to make one now! And I had to laugh about spending money to impress someone. I’m impressed when YOU DONT SPEND MONEY! 🤣

Lovely sunset at the end. Thank you for sharing your trip. Will have to put this on my girls trip list. Making memories is the best gift. For my older grandchildren, I give them a birthday coupon good for a movie night with Mema. It reminds me of Boldt Castle in Alex Bay. it is on Heart Island in the St. Lawrence River. They are slowly restoring it. Always amazes me to think of them hauling all the building materials and furnishings across the river. Even in the winter.

Loved your outing video ❤ I take any extra money, raises, extra hours, tax returns, etc. and apply them to our mortgage principle in an effort to 1) pay down our house faster and 2) keep my budget low.

Hello loved the ending. Try n buy Mears n vegetables when on sale but our Lost Leader buys are far n few between bargains. Did find a butt roast bone on for 1.79 lb. More than I wanted to pay for over 6lbs but getting 3 meals out of it. Butt way cheaper than I have seen in 4 years

Learned something new for Albertson's. If you're doing one of their sales, like this week juice was 0.97 for 2 from the 9th to 11th, if you order it during the sale and pay for it then you can pick it up after up to a few days. Context, I ordered Friday, last day of the sale and am picking it up Sunday and am still getting the sale pricing. Their pork and some beef were on sale for 2.99 per pound so I bought some for meal stretching. A local store for us also added a double up program for fresh fruits, fresh veggies and dried beans. Where if you have ebt they'll match you dollar for dollar up to 20 and you'll get a voucher to use there for next time. I'm really excited about it.😊

Don’t be afraid or ashamed to be honest with your children about the limitations of your budget. I spent a number of years working in the default division of a mortgage company. Our job was to help people get caught up on mortgage payments if they were behind for reasons beyond their control, like illness or job loss. I was shocked by applicants who didn’t pay their mortgage because the had to give their kids a “nice Christmas” or pay for their daughter’s wedding. 😮 I had to explain these are not financial emergencies beyond their control 🤦♀️
