Great video! Been training for ages, and on Monday I did a nice slow shot to get warmed up and my knee sounded like bubble wrap! I not in much pain, it was stiff and now it feels janky & hurts to bring my heel to my butt. Will start working on this next week!

This is great. Thanks for posting mate. In the video your student goes down but you remain standing. How do you recommend completing the takedown so you land in a dominant position like mount? I feel like I'm going to end up in their guard.
@DavidAvellan
@DavidAvellan Жыл бұрын
As they fall, you can continue to drive through to go into a knee cut pass. If they flop early, you can go into a bullfighter pass. Going into mount would be tricky and risky in my opinion. I would look for side control, but you ending up in an open guard situation is what you would expect against a tougher opponent, which is a good outcome from this take down.

Awesome video will definitely try implement just wondering can you try adding a trip if he starts to run backwards as your charging forward?
@DavidAvellan
@DavidAvellan 2 жыл бұрын
Well, the way we are running the blast double is a trip, our head is pushing him back as our hands pull his legs in to create the trip as he isn't able to step back fast enough to counter your forward pressure.

I just heard that your knees aren't supposed to touch the ground when you shoot so I was wondering what was I doing wrong IF I was doing anything wrong
@DavidAvellan
@DavidAvellan 5 жыл бұрын
That is definitely not true. It depends on the type of shot you are doing. Blast doubles or snatch singles will be done standing, but most other shots will require a level change and heel toe knee penetration step

What about for mma can’t you just set up the takedown with a couple strike combo then go for it without going in your knees
@DavidAvellan
@DavidAvellan 5 жыл бұрын
Sure you can, more so in MMA because people have a higher stance - leaving their legs more open. Setup is important. Using strikes to get the guard high so the hands out of the way for the shot, or timing their punches and slipping into a snatch double is common as well.

How to do this without being punched in the face or knee
@DavidAvellan
@DavidAvellan 4 жыл бұрын
It's all about timing. The best times to shoot are after slipping a punch, a skill I have shown on KZbin as well. You can also offensively setup shots by using a good stiff jab to get your opponent blocking high.

Coach, wouldn't your head be open to strikes on the street?
@DavidAvellan
@DavidAvellan 3 жыл бұрын
Whenever you shoot, your head is exposed to strikes. That's why having a proper set up and timing is key. Of all the double legs, the blast or snatch double leg is the safest in my opinion. First, it's the fastest to execute, as you only have to lower your level slightly and are on both feet when you explode. Second, your head is in the center of his body, making it hard to score a powerful strike once you make contact. You might think a knee can be delivered, but as you are holding his legs and driving forward, if he was to throw a knee he would get taken down immediately. In a standard double leg, where you are on your knee with the head on the side of their hip, elbow strikes can be landed with devastating effect, as we have seen many times in the UFC. So yes, there is a risk.
@theinvertedprotagonist
@theinvertedprotagonist 3 жыл бұрын
@@DavidAvellan Awesome explanation Coach! From now on, I'm not gonna go on my knees again to attempt a takedown. I don't think knees can be delivered. But with blast double where our head is in the center of his body, then I thought that some hooks could be landed on the sides of our head, albeit won't be the most powerful shots as you said. Anyway, it's one of the best takedowns for streetfight for sure along with body lock takedown.
@DavidAvellan
@DavidAvellan 3 жыл бұрын
@@theinvertedprotagonist every shot has its use. Blast doubles tend to work well in MMA and street fighting because in stand up striking, it is advantageous to be upright for better range and defense. Someone who is upright is an ideal target for a blast double. In wrestling and grappling, it can be more difficult to setup, as typically opponents will be bent over in a low stance. Blast doubles are much more difficult in this situation. So I wouldn't swear off doing a classic double leg as an inferior technique. It just has it's own uses.

Is this safe for the neck? I want to try it but i wanna make sure my neck doesn’t get messed up
@DavidAvellan
@DavidAvellan Жыл бұрын
As I mentioned, it's not the safest move for your neck. I go over in the video the proper form and set up for it. If you strike on a bad angle (head too high or low) or when opponent is out of position, you can hurt your neck. My advice, is to start on a heavy bag. When you get comfortable hitting a heave bag with the crown of your head, then start drilling it, and then once you are good there try it live

@@DavidAvellan Ok. Would neck exercises help too? Like if i try to get my neck stronger and more mobile
@DavidAvellan

@@stealthgamer474 yes they would help, but the main thing is to use proper technique and timing. A stronger neck will be able to maintain proper form better under stress.

does this work on people who outweigh you?
@DavidAvellan
@DavidAvellan 2 жыл бұрын
It does, but timing is more important. With people your size, even when you're timing is off you can sometimes muscle it by powering through. But on a bigger guy, you won't be able to power through and it would feel like you hit a brick wall lol. Ideally you are catching somebody as they move to an upright stance and hit them square in the chest with the crown of your head. Not too long ago Andy Varela hit Big Dan (a phenomenally skilled heavyweight, 6'7" 275lbs) on the UFC team competition with a snatch double, being outweighed by about 100lbs. So it's doable, but not easy

Hi Coach David, is sweep single without knee drop possible?
@DavidAvellan
@DavidAvellan 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris! To hit the sweep single, you need a strong pivot point, which is usually the knee that allows you to "sweep" behind them - making a sprawl less effective (can end up giving their back) and the whizzer harder to reach for (since you are behind them). I suppose you could pivot on foot to get a similar effect, but I don't think it would be as effective. Sweep singles are usually lower shots. Shooting a "snatch" sweep single would mean your head is somewhere around their chest, which would probably interfere a bit with sweeping.
@theinvertedprotagonist
@theinvertedprotagonist 5 жыл бұрын
@@DavidAvellan Hi David, thank you for your answer. So you think we can't do sweep single on the street? I just came across this video on how Jordan Burrough does it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2eZq6Fted99mrM By using the hand post as the pivot point, the force will be absorbed mostly by the hand post instead of the knee allowing the knee to land more softly. Let me know what you think!
@DavidAvellan
@DavidAvellan 5 жыл бұрын
Well I didn't say that. I feel comfortable shooting on concrete, because I don't land hard on my knees because I take a deep lunge, which reduces impact on the knees. Not ideal, but if I needed to drop to my knees I wouldn't hesitate. Regarding using a hand pivot, yes that is supplementing his sweep single, but he still has to drop to a knee to get low enough to get around. So I don't think that would work well without being on your knees already, so more of a variation of s classic sweep single. That is a good find though 👍

Hi David, what if it is a gi scenario, your partner has a collar grip stiff arming you away?
@DavidAvellan
@DavidAvellan 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not the best guy to ask about gi scenarios, BUT I would think this would be similar to someone posting on your shoulder. You wouldn't be able to close distance because of the stiff arm - you would need to break it. In no gi this can be done with a post pop or chop, a bob and weave, or an arm drag to name a few. In gi I believe it would be more complicated, as you would need to break the collar grip first if you wanted to shoot.

My friend, many top wrestlers are doing just this variation of the doubke with no problems. In BJJ, DJ Jackson has scored most of his take downs with this variation, which he learned from Ken Primola, who wrestled under wrestling legend Dan Gable. The key is hit with the crown of your head (hairline) at a 45 degree angle. I believe show myself in the video hitting a heavy bag full power with no problem. Most people have problems because they are not using the right part of the head at the proper angle.
