Shows the correct process of elimination through the steps , to check where the problem is. Doing an apprenticeship with a good garage has these steps ingrained into your thinking. At least the owner can now work out what to do next, with that worry off his mind. Keep em coming Kiwi. Good old NZ producing thinkers not guessers , just think Burt Munro👍👍

In France shops have an obligation of result, which means that the moment the quote was approved and they start the work, it must come out fixed. And in many cases they don’t want to bother with an uncertain diag that will take time, so they will say it needs a new engine or who knows what either to scare off the customer away, or to not bother spending time diagnosing. I’ve seen that so many times with people with little knowledge about cars. They end up fixing what’s not broken and spending so much money…

The other shop didn't want to touch it because they either didn't have a good enough tech to do it or they're too busy with "easy" work and didn't want to spend any time. They probably did the owner a big favour because I've seen what happens when shops that shouldn't tackle electrical issues do. They'll spend hours trying to diagnose the problem and trying to justify the bill to the customer. Your methodical and logical approach was spot on.

Interesting! In the US, plastic bumpers didn't arrive on Camaros until 1978. (My first car was a '76 - with chrome bumpers.) This car seems to have the normal 1976 chrome bumper on the rear, but a later plastic bumper up front. I wonder if somebody did some "custom" work? From underneath, it appears that some of the "newness has worn off" of that plastic front bumper too!

For what it's worth, I had a Ford 302 that sat on an engine stand indoors for decades. I appeared to be locked up. Long story short, the carbon from the combustion chambers fell off and created a piston stop of sorts. Had to pull a head to figure it out. Wierd that it fired without 20 minutes of cranking and pumping the pedal.

Motor sounds good! Ya know… as a guy who runs a shop I can tell you firsthand that if I cannot locate, diagnose, or have certainty about any particular issue that a car is having -I will tell you “I don’t know for certain.” 🤷🏻‍♂️ Not wanting to work on a particular car is common. Not being able to work on someone’s car because (you’re being realistic, and respectful to the customer by letting them know-you won’t be able to get to it within a reasonable amount of time) due to currently having too many waiting in line ahead of it and making the suggestion to the customer your car will get attention sooner at a shop less busy. I find those reasons acceptable for turning a customer away. However, when you choose to make a uninformed statement about the status of a vehicle that has not been thoroughly examined -opens you up to scrutiny…especially when your statement is proved wrong! Especially such a potentially damaging, costly, and irresponsible statement/claim! That statement had the potential to influence the owner-to cut his losses, abandon any future efforts on that project and get rid of the car! The car could’ve ended up parted out, scrap metal …who knows! The shop who previously had the Camaro missed an opportunity to do right by that customer. I’m willing to bet they had a great deal of anxiety and embarrassment when they were informed the car was going to a highly respected classic car shop-AND RIGHTLY SO! Well done Kiwi👏👏👏😊! Honesty makes life so much easier…doesn’t it 🤷🏻‍♂️

I was a kid back then, but IIRC, in '76 there were no O2 sensors or emissions testing and very few aftermarket cats. Seems pretty unusual (in my experience in the 80s) to spend the kind of money dual converters would have required when you could have easily left them off back then. Makes me wonder if it might have been some sort of project car for a magazine or performance company once upon a time.

Sounds to me somebody didn't want to work on the car. Oh yeah the motor is locked up. Get rid of it. Yeah if it was me I drive that car by that mechanic shop and say look it wasn't locked up but it's up to the owner. He's got a bit of work to do on it but good a little video 👍👍🙂🇨🇦

That car looks like someone's very long term (or long neglected) project that the owner wants (or can) get going again. I'm sure you see a lot of that, owners get off to what looks like a good start but run out of time, money or motivation and the car ends up sitting and rusting half completed. Sometimes they come back to it, sometimes they don't.
