No way to tell if it is a LS6 without the build sheet. A 396/402 car could have the F41 suspension. The infamous L on the tag is still a mystery. Thanks for sharing. I learned that from Patrick Glen Nichols, BTW.

Why don't you just say what it is it's most likely a big block SS Chevelle instead of just keep saying it's this what makes it an LS6 the sway bar doesn't make it an LS6 it makes it a big block disc brakes don't make it an LS6 steering shaft doesn't make it an LS6

I knew I had seen those cars before and that chevelle I was told maybe 20years ago that the LS6 motor was pulled and put into a tow truck that was sitting in front at the time. Cool story, bro. I agree with others that without the engine, dealer paperwork or build sheet, it can’t be determined if it’s a real LS6. Another thing is LS6 cars had a higher redline on the rack than other SS cars, but I see that the gauge cluster is gone.

Cool video lots of factory muscle. That Chevelle appears to be a original ss but nothing confirms it to be a LS6. All the 70 ss chevelles come with the thick front and rear sway bar. It was Parr of the f41 suspension. That car could either be a ss396 or ss454. I'm surprised you didn't do the cowl tag on the chevelle. Have a good one

There is a difference in the Big Block valve covers. The correct ones have drip rails or "fingers" tack welded on the inside to drip oil onto the rocker ball. You'll notice on the chrome valve cover little "dimples" in the chrome. Those were correct on the 454.

My first car was a 71 El Camino. It got the hood, dash/ gauges and front disk breaks from a wrecked 70 Chevelle SS 396. I wanted to swap the 4.10 12 bolt posi rear end for the 3.08 10 bolt I had as well but the fuel bill would have killed me! Instead I sold it to pay for a paint job. No SS emblems or stripes. I believe the color was called Mediterranean blue. It was still pretty peppy for a 350 sbc. Of course I rebuilt it with flat top pistons. it had Hedman headers comp 268h cam edelbrock performer aluminum intake but I kept the q jet. My brother had it runs right and she should sing when you opened up those big secondaries. I still have the SS 396 in my toolbox nearly forty years later.

I love your videos but how are you able to say this was an LS6? You are pointing out several things that might say SS, but not an LS6. You need paperwork for that, and I do not see how that could even be available for this one in its condition. I was told a long time ago the only way to even document a 70 Chevelle is an SS is to look inside the quarter windows to see if the Malibu molding holes had been filled. If a 70 Chevelle SS ever had quarters replace there is no way to document without paperwork and numbers matching pieces.

I disagree about the blacked out tail panels on all big block cars, I owned a brand new Yenko, in 1969, it was the same color as the car, and later another Yenko Camaro, it didn’t have the blacked out tail panel either. In 1970, I ordered a 70 SS 454 LS-6 , 4 speed 4:10 posi, black with white interior and stripes, I traded the Yenko in on it when it came in. The good old days! 👍

@@backyardbarnfinds I must have ended up with later models then, because both were body colored. The new one was bought from Bresee Chevrolet in Syracuse around July of that year. The other I bought as a basket case about 20 years ago, and did a full restoration on it. Was not number matching unfortunately, my original is In Unadilla NY in a collection there. I truly enjoy your channel, I was impressed a while ago with the video of the one off Olds that was in such bad shape. Years later my brother bought a real 71 El Camino SS from the estate of his wife’s grandfather. He had bought it new. It had the LS5 454 originally but grandpa had swapped it in the 70’s. It was fine by the time my brother got it, but he found an LS5 from an Impala wagon of all things. The EC was forest green with black as stripes. Bench seat but had disc breaks 12 bolt rear and SS hood and SS gauges. It needed a full tarp and he was building a house so he sold it. I was a broke apprentice electrician and wants it but no $$$!

CRV axle code is for posi 3.31 gears and was also available in LS 5 SS Chevelles. An LS6 car could also have a CRW code 12 bolt which would be 4.10 gears. The F41 heavy duty suspension with the large front sway bar was standard on all 70 SS's regardless of whether it had an L34, L78, LS5 or LS6. SS wheels were also standard on all SS's. All 70 SS's were big blocks and the frame motor mounts don't tell you anything. I'm pretty sure small block non SS cars had the same frame mounts. You referred to the deck lid stripes as LS6 stripes and implied that cowl induction was only available on LS6 cars. That is incorrect. Cowl induction hood and D88 stripes were available on all SS's regardless of the engine. The stripes were standard on the functional cowl induction hood but had to be ordered with the standard non-functional SS hood. Although the Chevelle appears to be an SS, nothing that you showed on the video proves that the car is an LS6.

I was very doubtful it was a ls6, but when you found the very rare breather and rubber seal, that was overwhelming and convinced me otherwise. Still don’t know why it’s not for sale as everything that made this car special is rotted away. It’d take so much money to get it restored original, it’d just make more sense to buy one all done. It’s just a very rough shell to start with. If I was rich, I’d save the iconic piece. But it’s in the wrong hands who just wants to claim they have a LS6.

A guy that owns a Camaro with a rear antenna would probably see a Camaro with a rear antenna everyday.

All that any of what was found proves is that it was a Cowl Induction SS Car . DOESN'T prove it was an LS6 Car .

The tag on firewall, you should have shown it. Tells you what factory made the car, the paint color the interior color, that's what's important, just like you done with these Camaro's.

They actually made more LS6 cars than LS5s in 1970

The cowl tag for the Chevelle is missing, eh? Probably some, "honest", person took it to make a fake Chevelle LS-6 and sell it to some unsuspecting person. Only thing is, that's a federal crime and carries a punishment of many years in jail. Not too smart.

The cowl tag does not have any information regarding engine size so it would be worthless to use to try to counterfeit an LS6.

I have a question unrelated to this video, but I have an 86 trans am, I've owned it since 1992.. my question is where can I find its options from the Vin tag??? Is there a website or do I just Google the vinyl number?? I have no idea where to look... I'm curious what the cars original options were... any help would be greatly appreciated, you seem to know a lot about this.. not sure with it being an 86 that it has a cal tag... I'm thinking just the Vin number 🤔

There should be an index card sized sticker either in the glove box or console or possibly in the “well” area in the back. Maybe on the inside of the cover where the spare tire stuff is. It will have the RPO (regular production option) codes on it. Just google 1986 trans am rpo codes.

Could have been a 396, but, who cares! If its got tags and title, absolutely worthwhile builder. Im to old and sick to take it on, but, if I was 20 years younger, you betcha!,, Thanks!,,,Love DUBS,,,,,,,,

When looking at the hole and grommet for the vacuum hoses for the ‘69 RS, you mentioned it was like the ‘67. Actually, ‘67 had electric motors for the hideaway headlights, and GM switched to a vacuum setup in ‘68 to save money, which was idiotic for the consumer. Not trying to nitpick tho, as your videos are entertaining and informative
