I don't know, 90% of these traits apply to Aussies. One thing, Dobermans would freeze their balls of here in Utah, oh well I guess that means working line GSD.

I knew a lady that owned nothing but Dobermans. All her Dobermans were professionally trained to protect and recognize friend or foe. If someone came to her door, her two Dobermans would stand behind her. When she opened the door, if she extended her hand to the visitor, her Dobermans would recognize that gesture as a friend and they would go sit or leave the room. But if she kept her hands close to her body or arms crossed, her Dobermans would stand behind her ready to protect. I visited her many times and her dogs were always well behaved.

Last month I lost my sweet girl at age 12 to cancer. I too was diagnosed with cancer last fall, but she hung on until I finished my seven months of cancer treatment - her closeness to me was very comforting during my difficult treatments (chemo, radiation, operations). She was the third Doberman I have had in my life, once I had one Doberman it was hard to get anything else. In a couple months I will be looking for another dog, and yes, it will probably be a Doberman - the good just outweighs the annoying.

I'm very sorry for your loss. My 4 year old rescue girl had lip cancer surgery just before I adopted her. 6 months later I was diagnosed with cancer. Went thru chemo, radiation and surgery too. She wasn't happy with me after each chemo treatment. They are so smell sensitive. She is a Velcro dog too. She is my 6th dobie. I absolutely love the breed. Wishing you good luck in finding another dobie.

@chrisgraham2904 I once had 5 at the same time. I found that the only way was to stay 1 step ahead of them so they could not predict anything that made me boss no force needed just knowing dog behavior. Eg I used to go outside fetch my car from the garage then get out open the gate drive through then close gate. This was the routine so now and then I would dri e up to the gate then come inside and make a cup of tea then go out again and drive off all the time ignoring the digs but looking out the side to them. You have never seen such surprised dogs they thought they had ne figured out ! Ha hahaha

Just got a compliment yesterday. The lady stopped her car, rolled down the window, and said I've never seen a more beautiful dog. Thank you. They are roto rooters - "you will pet me now". Taught my boy to rest his chin on my leg , rather than nudge your hand, when he wants to be petted. They also love being under their blankies. On a walk, I will tell my guys, no bark, just watch, especially when they notice some unsavory characters. Gives them a job without having them explode. Hope that helps.

All so true! I love my Dobermans! I do encourage all potential owners to understand this special breed. Unfortunately, Dobie Ranch Rescue, Florida, is having an significant increase of Dobermans being abandoned either on the streets or at shelters. My most recent adopted puppy was abandoned on the streets of Georgia. Embark DNA done to determine any health factors and he is a pure breed! No genetic concerns as well. At six months now and yes, he has some of these habits. However, I have learned so much from Doberman Planet starting from my first Doberman. Thank you!

I just got my first doberman puppy (15 week old male) and the thing about being selectively reactive is SO true I cannot even tell you! He’s PERFECT around people, children & other dogs, but if someone approaches us at night (only when it’s dark) he gives a really deep warning growl. @@DobermanPlanet Have you ever taught any of your Dobermans the "Help" command? It took Josie barely a minute to learn it. The command is for when you need help getting off the ground and you use your dog to help up via having them stand up firm, you grabbing their back, and getting up. Josie's so big so the command doesn't hurt her.

Our Doberman was taught by our Labrador who is the alpha of our dogs. So a lot of the Doberman issues she got barked at and was taught from him not to do. However, on any walk if a man walks past me she will growl or pace around me until they are gone - On one occasion she started growling as a chap came round the corner in the dark and stopped the second his wife and child came into view behind him.

Having owned dobermans all my life I can say with experience that they are wonderful dogs, we always had cats and they always bonded with our cats and never cchanged or bothered our other pets. I will say and recommend training your dog not to jump up on you or family members. If you start with a puppy that will end up being 100 lbs you can't have a dog that will knock down children or adults because they are happy to see you. We have had great Danes too and they are similar but not as intense as dobermans, we love both breeds.❤

Exactly john! Recently a neighbor complained that my dog ran Into the street and charged her while she was walking to of her dogs on the opposite side Of the street. She called the animal control. I told animal control that there was no way my dog would leave my side and be disobedient. I told the animal control that governments are known as the velcro dogs. They were going to sight me with a warning citation. I told them that there was no way this event occurred, And that My dog was not But that I had problem neighbors. And I said you are welcome to come to my home And meet my dog. They said we will be over within two hours. And when they arrived they said we want to put your dog to the test. Not one but two animal control officers arrived and then insisted My dog be off leach. They then walked across the street pulling a large stuffed animal. And my doberman was at my side which I commanded to stay. Sure enough, my doberman simply watched the animal control officers with their ears pointed upward in curiosity. They then came over and said my dog passed and I said, Oh no we're not done yet. I told them to watch me and that I would not give my dog any commands whatsoever. I then began walking towards my backyard. My doberman immediately not only followed but ran ahead of me. I then looked at the animal control officers and said oh no I changed my mind. I'm going to walk back out into the front of my house. And let's see what my dog does. Sure enough my government followed me to the street. I then continued doing the same thing two more times never issuing a command to my doberman. Of course my doberman followed me each time staying at my side. The two animal control officers looked at each other and said you are right, This dog is a velcro dog. And that your problem is the neighbors. So we are not going to issue any warning or citation to you. By the way we think you have a wonderful dog.

@TSeeker1
@TSeeker1 Жыл бұрын
@@benhardwick1970 Yeah, they have a short coat, but even that can be dangerous in the heat - Dobies should not be outside for long periods of time; they want and need to be with their people!! I've raised four, and not one of them ever wanted to be outside unless I was. That's part of their makeup, they really don't do well mentally if they are alone or are away from their people. Please, please hear this before you get one. They are fragile physically and mentally. When their mental and tons of physical (excercise) needs are not met daily, they can make your life miserable. They can get horrible diarrhea and other illnesses from stress, as they are highly strung, naturally anxious and extremely energetic dogs. They are not for everyone, that's for sure. I hope this helps.

As well as, when I have to leave. If Abby is outside on the rear deck. And she hears my car keys. She'll pop he head inside the doorway, but refuses to come inside. Knowing, I will not leave, unless Abby is inside. Where it's safe for her and in an climate controlled environment.

My 5 month old Fawn Doberman Lucy does not like to go for walks. She flat out lays down after we get halfway around the block. Which results in me picking her up and carrying her back home. Sometimes depending which neighbors yard she stops in if I know them personally I lay in the grass with her till she gets bored and walks back home with me. I’ve tried all sorts of treats to no avail. I trust her off leash because she sticks by my side but like all dogs it’s in their nature to chase squirrels or stray cats which are abundant in my neighborhood. So I exercise her at the local park. She loves fetch. Bless her heart she is a very quite dog. She doesn’t cry as much as I’ve heard from other doberman owners. She also doesn’t drool. I lucked out with her, she stopped eating fast once she realized her 5 other litter mates no longer shared her food. She takes her time eating everything from her food to her snacks. Very meticulous, sometimes I lace her kibble with chunks of chicken, she will eat the chicken first and then come back later to finish the kibble. Now she does have a habit of leaving a water trail from her water bowl but she has gotten better about taking a moment to let it dribble back into her bowl first. I think all of us could brag about our dogs but damn I feel lucky. Maybe cause it’s actually my first dog that I owned versus a dog my dad got for the family. My father lost both his buddies recently (a year each apart).First his Picapoo Harley who was 11. That little rascal was always with him, used to make me laugh when my dad would go to the store he would leave his truck running and called that his antitheft! They slept together always and had an almost telepathic relationship. He would get jealous when my mom would come home from work, she always gave my father a hug and kiss and Harley just had to come in and get some of the action. His other buddy was Kilo an Am-Staff. He passed at 12 years of age, I had to put him down for my dad because he couldn’t take it anymore after he put Harley down and many years prior he put one of our Chow Chows down too. Our sweet old girl Inca was the only dog we never had to put down. She went in her sleep at 16 years of age. I literally grew up with her, I was still in diapers when we got her and her brother Thor. Here I am at 27 and she has always been the dog I hold in highest regard. Even in her last days despite hip problems she still had gas in the tank, she would chase after squirrels and frequently left large sized possums that where unlucky enough to cross her path in the night laid out neatly in rows on the porch. My father has always been an animal person. He is like an animal whisperer I swear to you it’s incredible. As a kid I can’t tell how many animals he would befriend even for the briefest of moments. Turtles he would stop and pull over to help cross the road. Hell he even would pick up snakes by the tail so that he could get them off of the road too. Even the meanest cats I wouldn’t dare attempt to pet my father could spank their bottoms, they purred and just acted like he was their owner. My dad always told me animals are here for us so we need to help them because they can’t help themselves whether it’s their nature that gets the best of them or our own human nature that prevents them from doing so.

Two more things I would add in my experience would be the nose stabbing and head bonking. No, he can't just sniff. He has to go around STABBING everything with his nose. I have never been bruised from being smelled by any other breed. When petting him, it's best to keep your face clear and away from his head. Without any warning that head will come up out of nowhere and bonk you hard in the nose, forehead, teeth, or chin, and that skull is solid!

My pup is about 14wks now and no matter how many videos I watched, nothing could prepare me for how bitey they are. It's relentless, diversions, chew toys, corrections, they are relentless. They will chew a toy for a few seconds and whip around and try to chomp on you. Clothing snags and holes are constant. This is more than the normal constant mouthing of other breed puppies that I've experienced. If you are sedentary or older, think very carefully about this. One second of inattention and a pair of glasses or a remote or whatever will get destroyed. We love our pup but this is a very trying experience. She is slowly learning but it's an all day struggle. She is finally old enough to get with other dogs and that is helping but man oh man the next few months are going to be exhausting.

She's really amazing. I never had a doberman before and the first few months (we're at five now) were a lot crazier than I had anticipated but she's shaping up so well now. The two biggest things we are working on now is house training isn't solid yet and counter surfing. She is starting to know right from wrong now though so things are sinking in a LOT faster. I may add a second dog once she gets settled in, I really like her.

Make sure you are alpha, that what you want to put up with is trained in, from the beginning. The smartest that wants to be your Alpha assistant, no accidents, no tearing things up, no pulling on the lead, a completely trained dog, reinforce the training everyday, you will be amazed! Keep training time and playtime completely separate. If you don’t want them on furniture or jumping up on you, be the alpha. When they are young, don’t leave them in the house unattended. You can and should train inside the house. Teaching them to stay laying down is very important (they may not like it, but they can learn it, and it will help them prepare for being an inside dog, while you are away.) A true working bred dog is the best kind of Doberman, Ahrtal lineage.👍

Have a dobermann that loves to be literally by your side. Wherever you move, he's going to be beside your leg and if he knows you're about to leave, he subtly blocks your path or sits on your foot. Quite adorable. His son was more relaxed, but very inquisitive. He sniffs through you like he's airport security. He even goes between your legs if he gets excited to see you again.

I never ever had that problem with mine. Mine lived to be 12 years. The only thing you need is a puppy door so that they can get out and do their potty outside. "clean up often" soon or later they will step on their own poop. One thing that did happen is it loved to be covered with a blanket to go to sleep and ended up having to wake up 3 or 4 times a night for 12 fkn years!!! Any blanket given to it lasted for a few months because it loved to tear them appart and still be covered by them. I gave it a laser pointer to follow and it kept it in shape. At the park I removed the leash and could follow that laser light for 15 minutes non stop. When I did that she would wake up less times at night. Never had problems with a leash. If you talk to them like a person they will eventually understand what you are telling them..If you talk to them with commands they will only learn that. Mine knew what we were talking about every time like a sponge. Very highly intelligent dogs. These dogs won't make your house smell like someone owns a dog. My clothes or house never smelled like we owned one. They need tons of excersise if you don't get them tired they will be all over you everywhere you go. They don't want to be alone when you are there.

OMG loved this video, so much great information. I owned a doberman years ago, when He was in the bitey puppy stage, it hurt and drew blood. But still the best most loyal dog I have ever had the pleasure of owning.

Your video is spot on. I am on my 7th Dobie, Zoe. I call her my Black Shadow, as she has to be within a 10' radius of me at all times. She won't go out in our fenced-in back yard unless I go out with her. She pushes her bones in my lap, so I can hold them for her while she chews them. God forbid if I want to relax and watch TV. She keeps pestering me to throw a ball or turn my attention to her. And if I go outside without her, she will keep barking until I come back in. But she loves everyone and assumes that every person that she meets must have a treat for her.

Excellent video John ! Recently with great sadness I discovered from my husband's mom that she heard that my daughter has two dobermans and since last month the male bit her four occasions when she was eating, we can't visit to eat with my daughter as each time she is preparing food but especially eating the dog becomes very quiet and watches her whilst growling. When she tries to tell him off to leave the table area he has bitten her. I think she needs to get a professional help by training. This has caused issues because my daughter invited us for lunch but we had to refuse but we can't let her know that my husbands mom divulged about the doberman and the biting events. My mother in law told me not to repeat what she told me as she would telephone to report the dog to the authorities. Please help!!

My doby mix had the most extreme anxiety. He was seriously the best dog ever. I loved how fast and easy he was to train. How he had perfect instincts without any training. How he wasmy shadow baby always. Slightly annoying while layingin the kitchenwhen i was tryingto cook. The anxiety was such a battle for years though. I finally had to get an impact crate. It was expensive (around $2000), but worth it. Mind you, he was crate trained early and loved his crate, but he was so strong he broke all other crates when we'd leave the house. He would tare apart the house, scratch, and chew doors. He actually ate 5 doors, broke 2 windows (I was shocked he wasn't hurt), we tried all forms of training and meditation but all the professionals told us that some dogs are immune to all meds and simply need someone home 24 hrs a day, every day. So you can imagine how hard it was to go to work, to grab groceries, to plan a trip... ever. It was hard. Wish I had bought that impact crate sooner. It was a life saver and game changer. I will get another doby once my family gets a house though. They are truly the dog for me and my family. There's a lot of pros but I also wouldn't recommend everyone having one. One wrong form of play or training could mean a life time of repetitive behavior. Example: the biting puppy phase. You tell your Adult friends not to encourage the biting with teasing because this breed gets a bad reputation for so much; biting is one of them. You don't want your dog to bite a kid, even if playing. The Karen's of the world would loose their cool, press charges, and have your dog put down. You also don't need to lay hands on this breed when training, just a deep firm voice. That's enough to get them to listen but a lot of other breeds might need a bit of a push; this one doesn't. I loved that I could walk my kids in the stroller with my beast walking beside me, unshaken by other dogs barking. He would be stoick if approached and would only growl if he sensed danger or wanted to warn me of the situation. If people approached the fence and my kids were outside, he'd make sure my kids kept their distance from strangers. One time, my landlord came by and didn't tell me he was going into the yard. I came out just in time to tell my dog to stand down, he instantly started wagging his tail and gave the man kisses yet not even one second before he was barking and growling, protecting his kids. So not a breed for everyone. People do have to give you a heads up when stopping by, I always had to introduce my doby for the dog to calm down. Ya gotta train them early. But they are the most loyal dog. Definitely a relief to know they have your back, always.

I have a really strange Dobermann.. He's 11 months old now and totally perfect loose in the living room while I go away in the morning for about 3,5 hours.. Doesn't whine or bark.. He totally skipped the "puppy biting stage" and still hasn't destroyed anything so far.. Even his "puppy stuffed toys" are still alive and well.. He has no reservations toward strangers and I even can leave food on the counter and it won't magically "dissappear".. I'm sure he's a full European Dobermann and not a Dobermann x "saint" mix or something because we do have some struggles.. Mostly thanx to his raging hormones and his focus capacity that is comparable to the size of half a shrimp.. 🙈😅.. But other than that... He's really strange for a Dobermann 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
