John, I used the same DNA company as you, and my Doberman pup came back having 1 DCM-1 marker and 1 DCM-2 marker - making her at "high risk" for getting DCM at some point in her life. But, I'm not going to spend time worrying about it, as that would ruin the time that I have with her. As Embark points out, not all dogs with these markers end up getting DCM. Bottom line: I feed her well - I exercise her every day - I give her lots of attention and love - I take her to the vet - and, I'm not going to worry about things that aren't within my control.

Hi John, I recently lost my 3 yr old dobie to DCM. I'm retired and she was my world. I couldn't stand doing nothing all day so I started looking for another. I tried to get a rescue, that didn't work out. I live in RI and we only have 3 reputable breeders here. Prices starting at $3000. Finally found a puppy in MD under $2000 and the breeder brought her to me if I paid the car rental! Well I had her 5 days, almost 9 weeks old when the 21 yr old female next door let her sister's pit bull loose, knowing the dog would attack my puppy. Thankfully her brother ran right out and grabbed her in a bear hug from behind. My puppy ( Byrdie) was physically ok, but now everytime she sees a large dog she screams and pees herself. How can I help her overcome this? She is 4 months now and nothing has changed.

Thank you so much Ewerton. I love hearing that it may help some people. You know, even if it doesn't get the same views or attention as puppy videos on my channel, I really feel passionate that this is one of the most important videos I've done. I will say that I put more work into this video (and the guide that goes with it) than I have on any other project so far. Soooo much research, my head still hurts! Haha. But like I said this topic is a passion of mine. I really feel more owners need to test their dogs. For the good of their own dog and Dobermans in general. As the owner of my 7th Doberman, I have LOVED watching your videos! And even though I have lived with a Doberman since the '70s, I still have learned alot from you. And had great fun watching all the things I learned the "Hard Way". But the best thing I have learned from you is about the Embark DNA Testing. One of my past Dobermans died from DCM (age 9.5 years), and another died from Degenerative Myelopathy (age 12.5 years). So when I first watched this video I immediately used your link to order a test (Purebred & Health). Came back 100% Doberman Pinscher ( which he damn well better have been for what I paid for him), and much to my relief a clean bill of DNA tests with the exception of a low ALT which he is scheduled at the vet to get a baseline ALT blood test. Thank you for everything you do for Doberman Pinschers...By far, the best dogs in the world!!!

I just have to say I love your channel so much. I am bringing home a doberman puppy in a month and your channel was EXACTLY what I needed. I spent so much time before I found your channel going all over youtube to try to find useful information, and while I did find some, it just wasn't enough/specific to the breed. Also, the way you do your videos is so great: you don't put loud distracting music in the background that covers what you are saying. You cover everything that the titles of your videos suggests AND you go into great detail. And you just seem like such a great guy in general. You and your channel have helped so much, and really solidified my decision to bring home a doberman. Thanks for everything, you have a new subscriber! Notifications are on :)

Here’s a thought ... to verify the results, get another test kit. Register it in another male dog’s name and see if the results are different. It should be the exact same! If it’s not, then the test is unreliable! This would be my first step before getting upset or worrying about the previous results. If it is the same, then I would go back to the breeder for his results. Just a thought but this is definitely what I would do first.

Surely you’d have to do a minimum of three tests if you’re going to see if these tests are reliable? If you did two and they were both different: how would you know which one is accurate and which one is unreliable, you see what I mean? And buying three tests is probably quite expensive in total

My puppy is almost 5 months now. And I definitely want to purchase the same test. I waited for the litter to be born to get my puppy because both parents (VetGen tested) were negative for both DCM 1 and 2 markers. While this is not a guarantee it is the best you can do to try and eliminate the heartache of seeing your beloved dog drop dead before your very eyes. My Maggie had just turned 8 when she did just that. I knew her father had died from DCM 3 years earlier. It was a shock to the breeder and after he called and told me I worried but she had no symptoms, my vet said she seemed fine. At 8 I thought well maybe she would not get it . Two months later she died. That was last Nov. I almost thought I would not get another Doberman as the disease has become so prevalent. But that didn’t last. Once you have a Doberman.....that’s everything you want in a dog so I was determined to find out all I could and try to minimize the risks by choosing the parents who were both clear. After seeing your story I want to test my girl and hopefully that will confirm she is negative for both markers. DCM 1 positive marker is not bad. DCM 2 is the majority of Dog who get the disease. They feel there is another mutation involved also as there have been rare cases of DCM with dogs who were genetically clear. But there isn’t any guarantees. I will keep you posted on my results. Hope Arlo lives a long and healthy life.

Hello John....I've been watching you for over a year. I do love all your input and the "guest" hosts too! I DID make use of your EMBARK discount and got my results back recently. My dog is a Euro female and 22 months old. I selected the green purebred kit. The entire test came back with all GREENS except for 1 test. The DCM1 test showed a marker. I guess I shouldn't complain She did come from a reputable breeder here in FL. The COI wasn't as low as I might have expected but it was a 46. The breeder told me all of her breeding dogs are hand selected and I think she said they were screened before being shipped from Europe. Either way, she sounded really dedicated to her dogs and their puppies. I had the lengthy interview that others have had with their breeder before they were "allowed" to buy a dog. I have noi regrets and would recommend this breeder to anyone around. My dog Khaleesi is a great dog! Mike

I've been watching your channel for 4 months now and this is my first comment, and I'm getting my first Doberman next week she is 100% European and her parents are registered to the AKC. I can't thank you enough for doing this Channel because it gives me good reliable information I need.I've had a Great Dane, and a Miniature Dachshund. Now I'm alone most the time and I'm not able to work because I'm on SSDI. I have been in situations several times in my life where I needed a dog to protect me from people because I've been attacked. I've even had to move because it's gotten to dangerous for me to live where I was living before. And we had to go to court and get a restraining order because they just wouldn't leave me alone.When I had a Great Dane he did protect me and I miss him. But I really want a loving family dog again that wants to be with me and protect me.I also have Autism. So my family and I have agreed to get a Doberman to live with me in my house cause now I'm alone without any dog anymore. We've research this whole year about what new dog to get and your channel has helped. I'm also going to try and get one of those test kits because my vet said they have never heard of those tests.🤔I am subscribed to your channel and the notification is on.Please keep updating us on Arlo and information on Dobermans! Hi John, Hello Arlo you handsome boy😄 John, first I would like to say to you is; your a God send to our Great Doberman Babies that we love so much! You walk the talk and then some, continually educating yourself near blind. You’re a true advocate with such passion and love for the breed that so many of us choose to make part of our families. I agree with pjm0621 that idea sounds like a good one. Also, I’d just like to tell you a quick story about the best dog I’ve ever been owned by🥰 32 years ago a neglected male Doberman who wasn’t wanted originally was placed in the pot during a poker game. He was won by someone else who didn’t want him either but thought he could sell him. I was working as a vet tech then and happened to be working that Saturday morning. Two yrs prior I had to put down my female Doberman, who was also my very first Doberman😭 Ok, enough tears. This dufus male Doberman jumps out of the truck he was in, dodging traffic on a busy street as the guy was in a store trying to sell him🤬. A client of our Vetinariay Hospital day this and threw a leash around him and some cheese helped. The guy said he didn’t want him so she brought him to our office. My coworkers knew he was coming but didn’t tell me, they knew, I, deep down really wanted another Doberman. His name SAGE was chosen a year prior to me knowing him. He arrived, he was 8-10 months old, emaciated, and had the worst case of flea dermatitis infection. I kept saying well if he don’t have this or that wrong I might consider it. My Dr. Ran every test he could at the time. Except for the skin, tape worms and being skinny he was in perfect health🙏🏻 I was so careful of prevention of bloat all his life!! He grew to be a big beautiful boy who loved everyone. At 11 yo he started coughing a little, it got worse when we all were away for Christmas and New Years in the mountains. We took him to the University of Tennessee Veterinary School of Medicine where he was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy with A-fib and CHF😭 I was loosing my boy!! I didn’t want to drive home from TN to FL with my Sage gone, wrapped in a blanket. Plus my two sons were 7&8 yo. So I opted to pull the fluid off his lungs, stabilize his heart rhythm until we could see his vet. TN told me he had about 9 weeks to live with his medication, but exertion could exacerbate his CHF and fill his lungs again🥺 I kept him on his meds 💰💰💰💰💰 WORTH IT thank God I had the money🙏🏻 I promised myself and Sage I wouldn’t bring him in and out of a CHF crisis anymore and I wanted him to have fun, and let me know when you’re tired. I didn’t want to treat him like an egg. He didn’t run around as much outside, but he played with my 3yo female Doberman that Sage raised and a 7yo male poodle rescue, who thought he was a Doberman too lol 😄 that we were blessed with along the way as well. Sage still loved to chase lizards. Until one Sunday he couldn’t catch one and came back to me with bluish gums and the start of CHF. He told me he was ready to go be with God🙏🏻 This was not 9 weeks later he had been given, it was almost a year later!!! He died of a Great Big Heart💖💝💞💓💗 by beloved Boy Sage. 12 years old is really a long life, even without DCM with A-fib and CHF. That’s my story about my baby boy Sage. I hope someone can get something from my story🥰

I read that DNA testing is not infallible with regards to DCM testing. The best test for DCM is a 24 hour holter (sp?) test, AFAIK. You probably know this, but I just thought I'd say. Thanks for the video. Arlo is looking great. Looking forward to seeing how you handle his teenage years ;)

So glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah so the test is infallible when it comes to detecting if the gene mutation is present... but yeah... that doesn't mean your dog has or even will ever have DCM. Which I think may be what you were getting at. Which is totally right. The holter monitor/EKG, sonogram, etc is definitely the best way to confirm if your dog has actually developed DCM. I do appreciate you posting this though because it clears some things up for people who believe a positive result on the DNA means that your dog does have DCM.

This was some awesome info! I just lost my female doberman on Friday May 1 to hemangiosarcoma on her spleen, She would have been 10 yrs old Aug 16th. It was a complete shock to us. I didn't know they had this test and I am researching breeders for my next Dober girl and I WILL get this test. Thank you so much for all that you do! This breed is the best and breeders need to be diligent about saving the breed!

I’ve heard that SOME of these dna genetics tests aren’t always 100% accurate. Do you think it’s possible that the 2 copies could have been inaccurate...
@DobermanPlanet

I've never hear that. My understanding is it's "digital" data and not analog. Meaning it's a string of letters read by a computer that matches it up with other known strings of letters. I think it's pretty hard for it to be inaccurate. Although who knows... it WOULD be interesting to run the test again just to see.

My wife and I are in the process of looking for our first Dobermann. We're based in the UK and after watching all of your videos we've found your channel incredibly helpful. Following on from this video we contacted the KC UK registered breeder that we'd reserved a puppy with and asked if DNA testing was part of their DCM identification process. They responded that the science for this was inaccurate and then they told us to go and find a dog elsewhere! We honestly asked very politely and are quite taken aback by the response. We're now unsure what to do. Do we try and build bridges with the current breeder or look elsewhere and start our hunt all over again? What would you do John and fellow Doberman Planet viewers?

HELLO JOHN, First, great video as always. Very informative. Secondly, let us remember, no matter what a test reveals, we’re never going to love our Doberman any less, they are second only to our own offspring 😁. Finally, it does give one pause to consider the “tightness” of the Breed and presents thoughts to looking at a universal solution. That’s why your site is most important, I hope Breeders are watching. To insure the future of our Doberman’s it’s obvious to this layman there needs to be some changes to insure Doberman’s for the future. Breeding for only “Best in Class” does have some pit falls. All creatures on Earth need diversity in their gene pool to remain healthy. Thanks again, Grace says hi to Arlo, She’s a flirt this month, she’s in season 😂😂😂

Thanks Lina! Yeah sometimes it does really feel like information overload with how good these genetic test kits are getting. You can learn SO much about your dog, it's really crazy. But honestly, I'd rather know than not personally. Especially because some things you can influence if you know that your dog is susceptible to it on a genetic level.
@ryangarner121
@ryangarner121 4 жыл бұрын
So actually, this is possible in genetics. During meiosis, generally, there's a separation of chromatids. Generally, that means one set of genes from Mom and one set from Dad. However, things don't always separate so perfectly. During the stages of meiosis there is more than 1 replication and separation steps. In Arlo's case, the mom, had only 1 copy, and the dad none of the aberrant gene. Well, during meiosis 1 and meiosis 2 that copy makes 2 copies of itself and then separates to make 2 new cells each with 1 copy. This is how gamete cells(sex cells) make more of themselves. Mom makes more eggs, Dad makes more sperm. Well, if after replicating the dna, during separation of the replicated cells both copies can get pulled to one cell leaving the other without a copy. That's how you get trisomy 21 (down syndrome). In other words, 1 of Mom's cells(eggs ) after replication has two copies of the chromosome carrying that specific aberrant gene and 1 cell has none for that specific gene. This is called non-disjunction. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nondisjunction. Well, it can happen that Mom contributed an egg with 2 copies of that chromosome, and Dad, also had a non-disjunction event in which he created a cell (sperm) with no copies of that chromosome. So he contributed none for that specific gene and mom contributed both copies. Inbreeding tends to lend itself to these replicative errors more commonly. As discussed in the video, inbreeding is common with the breed. This shows that as long as you keep using carriers in breeding, you're still not breeding out the aberrant gene, particularly with heavy inbreeding. Therefore, it's possible to have this aberrant gene even with responsible breeding by using carriers and having a high incidence of nondisjunction from inbreeding. But not using carriers in a small pool of donors (aka purebreds), means more inbreeding and more genetic mutations and anomalies. Hope this helps.

This is scary and sad. I am a German Shepherd guy. I lost my boy to an aggressive cancer back in July. As much as I love GSDs, I don't think I can go through that it again. (It's common in the breed). I am or was very interested in a Doberman. This DCM at 58% is scary. Those are not good odds. After watching your video, like you said, even if your careful, DCM can pop up. I am now afraid to get a Doberman because of that. Losing a dog to Cancer, DCM, or DME seems to be especially hard. It really stinks that two of the best breeds out there have these issues. I wonder if an F1 Doberman Doodle would help eliminate some of these genes with hybrid vigor?

Many breeders go ahead and breed even if there is some negative genetic findings because it can be very hard to find one with perfect health genetics, but hopefully the more of us that test will push these breeders to think more about the health of their dogs rather than the money to be made by people wanting a Doberman.

John great video! But I have to tell you Embark is not always the right on the first go. I've seen tests not even get the breed right until the 3rd try which is very unfortunate because it's expensive. the best thing you can do if you have the money is take the test multiple times and average the results you may get two copies of DCM one on this test and then one copy on the next.

CheshireKat I’m sorry for the premature losses of your three dogs. It’s hard to lose them no matter the time, but GD is a tough one to deal with. It’s unexpectedly sudden and often the last moments if caught are spent in chaos for all involved as you seek emergency care. Most times we never get the chance to say goodbye. I do understand the paranoia and walking on eggs trying to do everything just right to prevent this from happening. I just read an article about “Dog cancer rising at alarming rates” Its up 58% from 10 years ago. It’s sickens me, it’s said that 66% of canine cancer is preventable. I like you am a big believer that the toxic food is the biggest culprit!! I’ve seen the difference in my dog when I started homemade food. Good for you switching to a healthier food, That takes time and commitment, but we love them and their worth it 💖🙏🏻If you don’t mind could you please share with me the raw diet you use? What kind of dog and what size are the portions? I’m always looking for education on what and how much people give their dogs! Environmental conditions, lifestyle changes, “advances” in medicine has all shown to have an effect on DNA over time, all were mentioned as well. It used to be normal for a large dog to live an average of 12-15 yrs and more, 50 plus yrs ago and more. Hmmmm. !!!!!

Hi John, thank you for making these videos to share your knowledge, experiences, and research with us. As a first time dog owner and a Doberman owner, I have learnt a lot from your experiences shared. I wanted to ask you if you know whether the embark test reveals food or nature related allergies in your dog, or give a good idea that I can take further with the vet? I greatly appreciate any feedback you might have. To give you the history of my Doberman: My dobie Hugo will turn 1 y/o in another week and I had him since he was 4wks old. Not too long ago Hugo started having some skin issues that at first looked like mosquito bite bumps. Everyone talked about how shiny and sleek his red and rust coat looked, which is now punctuated with tiny stops showing skin, from scratches and irritation. His vet tried several sessions of antibiotics, suspecting food allergies by 3rd. Hugo has always had home cooked fresh meals, mostly baked or grilled protein(chicken, meat, fish), with raw or steamed veggies. Towards the last 3 months we were also giving raw eggs. He has always been a very picky eater, small eater. Feeding him sometime felt like a dentist visit. Hugo has now been on Royal Canin Hydrolyzed protein adult HP prescription diet for nearly 2 months. He hardly wants to eat, and even though the allergies got better towards the beginning, looks like it increases too once in a while. Sorry about the super long comment, but I value your opinion and would greatly appreciate any feedback you might have.

It's one of the few major tools we have to make a difference with our dogs and we should be using it. There are many disorders that an owner can have a positive impact on if they knew about them early and a DNA test can very often do that. An update to my first response to your post. I received back her dna/genetic results and am so happy to know she is clear for DCM 1 & 2! While I know that there are no guarantees as there could be other factors for developing DCM, diet, environmental etc. I at least know she is clear. That is all you can do at this point with what is known to avoid DCM
