I Truly enjoy your videos because they are brief, concise, and to the point Doc. You don’t waste countless minutes with empty talk about worthless self serving subject matter. I swear too many presenters just like to hear themselves talk and many times I either jump ahead to get to the meat of the subject or just close the video down out of boredom. Thanks for your series and the way you do it.

1:00 to 1:05, just a quick note, please consult the service manual for YOUR specific model for the proper orientation of the bike and the corresponding belt deflection measurements for each orientation. My 2011 FLSTC, for instance, gives a jiffy stand (tire on ground) deflection spec, and another measurement for the bike vertical with the tire OFF the ground

Doc, In the Harley FLHX service manual it indicates the following " With motorcycle upright and rear wheel off the ground or on jiffy stand without rider or luggage." AND "At loosest spot in belt." I have two questions regarding these points. 1) Is the "off the ground" a correct option? If so, that would greatly change the acceptable measurement from being either upright on the ground or on the jiffy stand. 2010 FLHX 1/4"-5/16" What would the off the ground measurement be? 2) The loosest spot on the belt as a point of measure, if you tighten to that and there are areas that are closer to the spec could then be too tight. I see a significant variations in belt tightness in different areas of the belt. Your thoughts and insights are appreciated.

Good info Doc. I've never seen anyone use the O-ring like that...guy's usually put the O-ring at the 10# mark before using it. I suppose it doesn't really matter - either way you are putting 10#'s of pressure on the belt.

What part [(top side (where teeth are) or bottom] of the belt are you looking at when measuring the deflection of the belt against the graduation marks on belt guard? I can't find this anywhere in the service manual. I'm thinking the bottom side of belt.

Hello Doc, great vids, thanks! I've still a problem adjusting the belt tension. I adjusted my rear belt tension on my fatboy (2005). What's happening is that when I torque down the left cone nut (axle nut), the adjuster on the left the shaft on the left side pushes backward, tightening the belt tension. It looks like the increasing diameter of the shaft when tightening is the problem. Can you help me with this problem? Thanks in advance. Best Regards, Wilfred

Hello Doc, I saw your video on the new and "improved" axle assembly kit for the 2020 and up touring bikes (part no. 43000213) which will also be the new replacement for 2014 - 2019 bikes with a torque value of 135 ft/lbs. - 145 ft/lbs. My question is, will this kit fit a 2010 road glide custom? If not, why? If it is for a 25mm axle, it should fit, correct?

Once I install the updated kit, will my frame and swing arm handle the increased torque values (135 ft/lbs. - 145 ft/lbs.) or should I torque the updated kit to the 105 ft/lbs. max?

I don't get the 10 pounds of pressure, can someone please explain that to me? I mean what's the difference if I used a finger or something else to push up on it? Just a few. You might be washing your bike too often or with the wrong soap. It is easy to wash out the natural lubricant out of H-D drive belt. H-D even offers Belt Lube. Second: Have you adjusted your shocks for your weight? Factory sets up on the soft side. Geometry changes with weight which might be effecting belt tension. Are you a Hot Rodder? Hard on the gas? Pulling each gear til it screams? Might want to modify the way you ride it like you stole it. Thanks ~ Doc

Why didn’t you do the adjustment ? To proper tightness
@bottmar1
@bottmar1 3 жыл бұрын
One thing I see missing on all of there forums about belt tension is a final check should be done while sitting on the bike to feel for a belt that is too tight. I do not trust any adjustment done while the bike has no weight on it. The most important place for belt adjustment is at ride height and should at least be checked by hand while on the bike. Easy to do AND IMPORTANT.
@LowCountryHarleyDavidson
@LowCountryHarleyDavidson 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting point of view..I would think the Factory figured that into their specifications....Doc
@bottmar1
@bottmar1 3 жыл бұрын
Checking for tension with a chain drive with weight on the cycle is even more important. It only stands to reason that final checking the belt the same way makes sense. I have found a few cycles that did not follow the factory method good enough and had a belt that was too tight. Double checking the results of adjustment with weight would prevent any chance of error. Swing arms always produce tension changes because the pivot point is not on the same plane as the tranny output shaft. Thanks for your many videos on Harley maintenance.

ALFONSO thegreat Back by the rear wheel axle there are adjusters that allow you to turn the adjusting nut to move the wheel assembly forward or backward adjusting the tension on the belt... just remember to turn each adjusting nut on each side of the rear wheel the EXACT amount of turns. Mark one of the “Flats” on the nut with a marker so you’ll know how many turns you’ve done so you can do the same to the other side... But I’ll say it again, the Service Manual for your bike is the best tool you could have when working on your own bike! Be safe and invest in one!
