Pete was a 2nd Cousin. I never got to meet him and it saddens me to this day. 3 days after his death I received a Clarinet. Thank You Cousin Pete.

Loved this tune since I was a kid. Have it on an old Jimmy Dorsey 78 that an aunt and uncle gave me when I was in elementary school. Great job here by Pete and Doc!

Pete and my Pop shared same birthday to year...Long story, became friends. Before I was old enough to get in club, Perw would let me hang out in his office during show...When I was twelve or thirteen, before show, Pete had me put on fake mustache and tails, took me onstage and introduced as, "tonight's musical arranger. " Great fellow, lovely, kind man.

Back in the late Eighties, I stopped in two years back to back at Pete's Place at The New Orleans Hilton. Ninety minutes of non-stop, transcendent world class musicianship both times. An indescribable talent. So glad I got to see Pete. God rest his good soul.

I grew up with big band music. My Dad played with Duke Ellington in Africa during WWll. Not as a regular but he got to play with him. In the late 60's Doc played with our high school band, Los Alamos High School and I got to spend time with him as did the whole band. Truly a wonderful experience.

Nice story. Thanks! As a lifelong rocker (even as a full-time musician for couple years), I really have enjoyed and loved all sorts of music from folk to rock to new age to Cajun and Klezmer, etc, etc, etc. Good music is good music. But I think the music I like the best besides modern rock and even modern jazz... is big band. I can totally see myself living in that era, and even seeing Sinatra and other greats singing in front of these awesome big bands. That music thrills my soul.

@@PlanetRockJesus I agree, there is great music of every genre. It is too bad that some close off their minds to the fantastic jazz we were lucky to get from Doc and the band.

I never saw Pete live (I've been a rocker all my life but love all types of music), but I spent three years in New Orleans (I'm from Chicago and now reside in Wisconsin) and had the pleasure of running across him in the streets there twice. I simply said "Hi Pete!" both times, and both times he said HI back. I was a huge Carson fan growing up from the time I was 15 in 1968, and saw Pete on there numerous times over the years. That's why I'm here!

So glad I found this. I watched this when it was first on TV back in the 80s (I believe - maybe the late 70s). I remember thinking how Pete seemed to be smiling as he was playing while Doc looked like he was working really hard. Seeing it after all these years, the difference isn't as great as I remember, but Pete does seem to have more fun. Of course, since I'm a clarinet player, I have no bias, right?

I saw Pete palay several times. When he hit a particularly hot improv lick, he smiled, around the O"Brien clarinet mouthpiece....and kept playing.

The reason he started playing Clarinet was because he had asthma. The Dr. told his Dad to buy him a horn make him practice and it would help.
