I'm going on 82 years of age, and I've never heard anyone play the "Licorice Stick" like Pete Fountain. His rifs' on the clarinet were magical and he always had the crowd in the palm of his hand. I consider myself lucky to have listened to him and Al Hirt in my lifetime. Joe Cimino

A very good clarinetist, I’ve been listening to Pete nearly all my life! I never get tired of his New Orleans music! Would like to learn a few of his solos! He and Benny G. are among my favs, to name just a few!

I've seen both--two flavors of absolute clarinet perfection. Because my Dad dragged me in the living room when I was 8 years-old to see Pete Fountain solo during his brief stint with Lawrence Welk, that is the reason I play clarinet today.

I saw Pete play live at his club in New Orleans just about a month after this. Sat about 15 feet away, what a wonderful experience for this former clarinet player.

I used to listen to the Boston Pops every Sunday on the radio. I recorded this on cassette during that broadcast and wore the tape out replaying Basin Street and Closer Walk. Thanks for the share.

There was NOBODY who could make that ultra-controlled, huge fat sound on that big-bore Leblanc like the one and only Pete Fountain.

You could not beat the fat, warm sound he got on the crystal mouthpiece; the exciting dixieland style, the simplicity, like Louis. Pete was my favorite.

I believe he also had a slightly larger bore than typical. I saw him @ his place in the Hilton, and he was so good it was preternatural---just another night for the great Pete Fountain.

Pete was my idol, as he could play swing, dixieland, pop, all things well. I just wish the audio here was tuned to feature him instead of overpower his softer spots.

Different, but easily as good or better. I saw Benny G live at Massey Hall in the 70s and he was not as good as PF; BG squeaked a lot and looked at his clarinet as if it was the horn's fault.... When it's live there is no "do over".

Pete's relaxed, fluid improvising was way ahead of anything Goodman could do - there was always a certain stiffness about Goodman's playing. Will grant you De Franco - Buddy was in a class of his own and could hold his own in any company, any style...
