A great live performance from Doc and the band on live TV. This clip is from July 8, 1992, I believe. Used here with the kind permission of: J.S. Marketing Director Carson Entertainment Group

Faster than usual tempo of Count Basie classic, how did the band keep up? I heard Doc perform once in the 70's or 80's at Mizzou half time , great. Also saw Basie perform in Kansas City, both were fantastic.

I was once in a band with Kenton-alumnus Richard Torres who claimed to be great friends with Pete. Also, the Candoli brothers are from my neck of the woods, Mishawaka, Indiana.

Doc retired this September at 95! He never stopped until his body did.

One of the things that Basie did soooooo damn well was mood and tempo. This performance, while good, fails in the Basie mood and tempo department.

I would not disagree. Basie was from the true jazz realm (including his audiences), while most of Doc's life was in the commercial realm (including his audiences).
