The effect of river current to roll the barge is dramatically visible. That would be a major concern in this operation, and a strong argument against laying the barge across the current. The cargo is acting as ballast to hold the barge level, but if that were to shift - as it must when offloading - the result may be sudden and surprising. With sensible engineering it can be predictively managed, but this is still an operation with big and unforgiving forces in play.

Crazy amounts of power needed to swing that thing around side on to the river current and hold it there steady, you can just imagine the potential carnage if somebody made even a slight miscalculation with regards to applying the various forces required to do this.

I was wondering what their contingency plans looked like if it sank…
@ats-36932 жыл бұрын
@@clifftrader I think the only way it would sink is if someone pushed or pulled at the wrong point on the barge and the resulting torque and force caused it to dig into the water and roll over, then you would see some glum faces. You can see it almost wanting to do exactly that in the video.

The difference between these two is that the 31T load that crane would have been able to pick up. So the ponton wouldn't have had to be across the channel. It could have stayed with the water current.

There was a lot going on there. I initially thought they were going to crane it off, but I think the crane was just there to set up the access area? By the time it was actually coming off the current had slowed a lot. As others have said in the comments, not a lot of margin for error.
@williamjolka43512 жыл бұрын
Normally that kind of positionning across thé stream is realized using big anchors and heavy winches to pull softly thé barge. Sarens is used to do so for much bigger pontoons . This short deep pontoon ( Van der Wees in Dordrecht ) has no free space to accommodate and fasten big winches on deck. So they décided to use this approximative method. A little bit risky but finally they did ! I never offered such not fully controled opération to à client . May be it was no other way ? Or bloody too expensive . When you must use à 1000 tons crawler crâne capacity and build piles to stabilize it the cost is Climbing to hell.
@hines8620092 жыл бұрын
This operation seems a little too overcomplicated. Keeping the barge closer to parallel to current would be a good start even if it means modifying the access area.
