Hey Dr Hope, med student from Germany here. During our first semester our physics prof actually told us how the Goldfinger-scene *could* be plausible. If the gold paint was covering her body by 100% she would have died from hyperthermia (reaching 42° C internally) about 8,4 hours after the paint was applied due to her being unable to control her body temperature via sweating. Edit: spelling
@sapinta3 жыл бұрын
That is the reason Francisco Lázaro, an athlete in one of the first olympic games, died, because he applied wax on his skin as a sun screen and his body couldn't sweat properly. He was running a marathon btw, he collapsed at km30.

I'd love to see more 007 medical science from you. The ninja who poisoned that woman in her sleep in You Only Live Twice, Oddjob's "shocking" demise in Goldfinger, the villain who can't feel pain in The World is Not Enough... there's so many!
@RhinoBarbarian3 жыл бұрын
Something crazy I heard about people who can't feel pain is that some of them have to teach themselves to blink regularly or their eyes will get injured. Blinking is triggered by our eyes drying slightly and becoming irritated and they don't feel the irritation.
@wayneigoe67223 жыл бұрын
The Goldfinger clip could be a result of a severe allergic reaction. There's a story from behind the scenes of The Wizard of Oz, where the actor cast as the Tin Man nearly died from a severe allergic reaction to the paint they used. Perhaps something similar occurred with the woman?
@jaihayes96473 жыл бұрын
Sure, it's not that something couldn't of happened. But the actual reason for death explained in the film was that she died of skin suffocation
@BleydTorvall3 жыл бұрын
Mythbusters attempted to test the death by paint clip, and actually stopped because the one being painted was experiencing (I think) increased heart rate and blood pressure. They couldn't really pinpoint a reason for it, but the medical staff they had on hand felt it could be dangerous to let them continue. Maybe not skin suffocation or whatever the movie called it, but perhaps overheating since all the pores were being covered combined with the stress of the situation?

The air pressure injuries in this made me think you should check out The Expanse and exposure to space injuries (as well as plenty of others)

You've probably heard of it before, but I'm pretty sure the License to Kill explosive decompression scene was influenced by the real life Byford Dolphin incident. Four divers died in a decompression chamber after its seals were breached at high pressure. Three were *mostly* intact, but the one closest to the door turned into bits of chunky salsa as his body was forced through the partially blocked entrance to the chamber.
@Amarianee3 жыл бұрын
Ugh, I watched a video on this and clearly repressed the memory. It was absolutely tragic and completely avoidable, had proper safety mechanisms been put in place to not allow one door to open until the other was confirmed closed. So horrible.
@valbourne17973 жыл бұрын
Chunky Marinara even.
@valbourne17973 жыл бұрын
Yeah, another thing is that it caused basically an explosion that killed a bystander and and severely wounded another. I think Axe range is a bad range to decompress the chamber from.

Aww dude that is tragic; I have never heard of this before.
@MGlBlaze3 жыл бұрын
Ah, looks like you beat me to it. Yeah, that's an incident I thought of as well. It was pretty grizzly. The way the other four occupants died also sounds very unpleasent, if not as dramatic as being forced through a gap far smaller than your body can fit through intact.

There is in fact a case where a decompression chamber failure lead to very dramatic deaths, but it didn't at all look like it did in that movie. The Byford Dolphin diving bell accident. The seal between the decompression chambers and the exterior diving bell failed, causing rapid depressurisation of the inner chambers. One of the occupants, the one closest to the pressure vessel failure point, was actually pulled through the failure point; causing catastrophic non-survivable bodily mutilation and what was left afterwards was not readily recognizable as human. The other three occupants (who were more distant from the failure point and their bodies were still intact) were killed when the rapid pressure drop caused disolved fat within their bloodstreams to suddenly become insolube, causing fat embolisms throughout their bodies. It is also thought that the rapid pressure change caused the instantaneous boiling of their bodily fluids. Both resulting in immediate stoppage of blood flow. Of the two tenders near the failure point, one was also killed by the high pressure jet of air and the high velocity debris thrown out, and the other was severely injured and was the sole survivor. Those kinds of injuries (namely, your body mass being forced through a very small gap due to high pressures) are also a massive risk factor for anyone working on the high pressure side of any kind of fluid system, including dive inspectors checking outflow gates on dams or the like.
@NetAndyCz3 жыл бұрын
6:57 I think it is not that far from what would really happen, I recommend reading about the Byford Dolphin accident. The explosive decompression when high pressure is involved is no joke.

That death through crazy chick was probably the most realistic of the bunch... the first thing that came to my mind was anaconda. However, people have died of weights on their chest that were far too light to crush them! The point is that it exhausts the muscles and the victims motions required for breathing become smaller. The same can also happen when someone is hanging without being strangulated.
@boojingleful3 жыл бұрын
Decompression accidents continue to be one of my worst fears to this day and I think watching License to Kill when I was very young may be the source 😂 Also thank you for mentioning how much the Bond series leans on facial disfigurement in the bad guys and I hope it got a couple of viewers to look into the discussions that have been happening about it!

Paint can block heat transfer from the skin, inducing hyperthermia, but not immediately. I've seen it in real life. An actor in Times Square covered himself in paint on a July day, where the heat index was over 90 Fahrenheit (33c). Fortunately, there was a retired military medic in earshot who immediately came to his assistance. I helped cool him down with water. Fortunately, there was a vendor with a bucket of ice.

Mythbusters movie myths tackled the goldfinger seen by painting our mythbuster gold. It was uncomfortable and did not nice things to their vital signs. Fatal? Not likely. They were monitered by EMS on site at the time. The paint was washed off in the shower set up in there HQ. The injuries I'd be concerned for involve parlour in steel beams above the construction site. Leaping 20 30 feet vertically and crashing chest first into a girder. I am shocked that alone won't be lethal. Then to actually be able to move and breathe enough to scramble up onto the beam, instead of falling to your death? But then to continue the chase? No way is that possible. Love the videos.
@Amarianee3 жыл бұрын
It was deemed plausible from his vital signs. They washed it off because of how bad things were getting. It was more of an overheating situation than "skin asphyxiation," though. So, had he remained painted, it's entirely likely that he could have died. The paint clogs the pores and sweat glands, so your body can no longer regulate its own temperature. A sane person, would remove the paint before getting to the point of death, but still technically plausible.
