Zion Williamson took a hard fall last night after a dunk attempt was blocked. He did not return to the game and was diagnosed with a 'posterior hip contusion'. In this video we'll talk about what that means and review the key anatomy.

This is the right way to fall. Allow the arms to absorb the initial impact and quickly bend (like a shock absorber) then allow the butt/back to absorb the brunt of the impact. A fall where the arm locks straight and takes the load can lead to fractures (think Gary Payton). That quick ability for the elbows to flex and not lock at impact is key

As someone who watches a ton of sports and only understands basic sports injury terms like ACL or Achilles tear the one's that are fairly common. it's a great tool for us to see your videos and explanations so we can understand them the next time they occur. It is also a great tool for my son who is 13 and loves sports so he can better understand sports injuries also. Anytime we see an unknown injury in a sporting event we look at your channel the next day for your explanation.

Hi Doc! 👋🏾 could you do a video on contusions? I always hear on NBA highlights players getting a ___fill in the blank with a body part___ Contusion but you never hear of that type of injury in football ever and I’m curious as to why, is it just a general term for something? Why does the NFL decide not to use that term but the NBA does? Thanks Doc!

Love your content. I have maybe a strange question. In this video you used the term "bone bruise" which I've heard before in relation to injuries and hear people talk about. I thought I knew what it meant but then a coworker of mine got injured on the job and was sent to the clinic to get treated, she thought she had a bone bruise and said something about it to the doctor and they told her there's no such thing as bone bruises. Do you have any insight as to why a doctor would say there's no such thing as bone bruises?
@BrianSuttererMD
@BrianSuttererMD Жыл бұрын
Hmm idk why they’d say that. Technically a bone bruise involves tiny microscopic cracks in the bone. So it’s not exactly like a bruise on the skin. I’m sure it was just a terminology thing

For as long as he doesn't get a jumshot, he's gonna be putting himself at much higher risk. Many times he is completely open 15ft from the basket, and I think he shot a single 3pointer in preseason and drained it, but until now he hasn't shot outside of the paint in season games. I don't understand why he's avoiding this midrange jumpshot, because eventually he's gonna have to start using it, so why be like Ben Simmons?
@GameChanger-xi4iy
@GameChanger-xi4iy Жыл бұрын
@@AlexandreG He used his mid range like 2 or 3 times his all star season but it was really underdeveloped you could tell, he needs momentum to get his shot off in rhythm, he's not a guy who can pause and get into his shot he needs to be moving forward to shoot it.

@seanbell69
@seanbell69 Жыл бұрын
Look, I know this injury isn't particularly damaging, but the mechanism of injury (falling from that height) is definitely a problem for Zion. The amount of contact he draws right at the basket really can knock him off his ideal landing path and force these hard falls frequently. Especially with his weight, I expect another severe injury this season.

Funny enough if you ever take a jiu jitsu class or did wrestling, they train you to fall similar to this. Now ideally they actually want the upper back to take the brunt of the damage, as you then roll to a flat arm or slap the mat signaling both arms are flat. But, the idea of your back actually taking the damage on a fall and tucking in your chin like Zion did here is more or less the better way to fall down.

Another instance of why players like Zion almost always end their careers as shells of their former selves. His explosive, almost reckless, playstyle puts him in positions where he's more likely to end up injured. Explosive, sharp cuts and jumps on the floor put the ankle and knees at constant risk. When he gets up to the basket, the airtime he can get only puts him at further risk for defenders to knock him down, like in this video. Just look at the injury histories of Derrick Rose and Blake Griffin, and you'll see Zion is already on the same trajectory health-wise as these two. If he's not careful, he might even go the way of Gordon Hayward, which would be an absolute travesty.
@DGreey
@DGreey Жыл бұрын
@Dennis McConnell I agree. Joel Embiid and his flopping is the most egregious of them all. A 270+lbs big man should not be falling down constantly looking for pity calls from the refs. One of these days he'll end up with a serious injury because of it.

I know Zion has a fun play style, but he’s gotta become more rigid with how he plays, in all honesty I think he should just copy Giannis and tweak it to fit his body and movement, the flashy stuff is what basketball fans want but, him toning down the high jumps and just using his physicality will still let him improve and win games. He looks like Ja Morant but his not as agile in the air and doesn’t have the ability to get up as easy since he weighs so much more than Ja, a paper ball won’t break if it falls down but a glass ball will. Especially considering the egos out there in the nba, getting dunked on often will just have these big egos waiting to push him in a Non conspicuous way. You see this happen in almost any sport, the good players that are also flashy will be targeted in a manner where anyone can hurt them, but it won’t be seen as a foul or intentional. Seriously tho he jumps really high up, it won’t take a lot for a big ego player to come up and shove his legs so he lands on his back again or anything else. He’s gotta be more careful about stuff like this, you won’t have a long career if you’ve been injured twice in 3 games, seriously just play like Giannis or Lebron, he’s stronger than both of them, and has the speed and ability to pass most players.
