I've Never Been More Worried Watching an NBA Game | Zion Williamson Injury Risk

The regular season is a few days away and there's already some concern surrounding New Orleans Pelicans Zion Williamson and a possible knee injury. I've never been more worried watching a player in the NBA then when Zion Williamson is on the court. The combination of an abnormal gait pattern and his body weight and playing style make me really concerned about him getting hurt.

I'm 6'4" tall and have had knee problems my whole life. Watching Zion I've always had a sense of amazement but there was always an odd level of anxiety that I couldn't place. Two minutes into this video and I can see exactly why I feel that. Seeing that line you drew to describe his knee angle hit the nail on the head and made me cringe. I don't know if I even have to watch the rest of this video after that. Yikes.

Hey doc. As a doctor myself, I have the same concerns for Zion. I really hope they have a world-class team of doctors, trainers, physiotherapists, nutritionists etc. on that Pelicans staff because this young man needs to be manged more intensely than the average NBA player. I've already heard Shaq and Chuck state publicly that he needs to get his weight under control. So his nutritionist, personal chef and personal trainer literally have to work as a cohesive group. If I were the Pelicans, I would definitely request that both Shaq and Chuck to him about the challenges of the NBA and get his parents involved. Not to mention a top notch psychologist because as a teenager it may be difficult to get if to understand certain concepts. It seems that he was raised in a stable environment so he may be more inclined to reason. I wish him all the best because I hate to see all of these injuries ruin careers.

I've been weightlifting on and off since I was very young. Any serious athlete or trainer has always strongly encouraged lifters to avoid "turning in your knees", especially during a lift. It's nice to finally have a name for it, and an explanation as to why it's dangerous beyond just assuming it increases the risk of injury.

Sure enough, Zion will be out 6-8 weeks and will need to have a knee "cleaned out" meaning he has a minimum of a meniscus tear. Zion hasn't played one NBA game yet and we're talking surgery and rehab already. The Doc couldn't be more right on.

He needs to get some weight off, otherwise he’ll never have a long term career. He’s amazing and I want to see him have success for a long time in the NBA. I don’t want to see another phenom go through a D. Rose story

His playstyle directly attached to his body mass. If he takes too much off he will be a useless player. He's played like this for the past decade or so which is about half his life. He better start transforming his game now like Griffin and Rosa have done, or he'll be the next greg oden.

You made a great point at the end, about his body type plus his style of play. Jabari Parker comes to mind, 6'8" 250 lbs, quick and explosive. That's a lot of wear and tear and I feel like that contributed to his two acl injuries, and probably why he slimmed down a bit after he came back.

I saw all this a long time ago. I was wondering why no one was talking about this. Even more, why the Pelicans haven't worked to address it from the start.... And just a few preseason games in and he's already injured. Prophetic video, thank you!

Only small forward i've seen that was -Drafted top 10 -Is less than 20 -285lbs while being around 6'6 (keep in mind 7ft shaq at the same age was 294lbs) -Walks as if he has major knee and hip problems -45inch vert -As fast as a guard Zion is a generational type athlete who could be the face of the nba one day but he needs to not get injured.

He is not as fast as a PG... What?? Where are you getting this info? He's a great athlete. But not even as athletic as LeBron was at his age. Plus you can go through the league history and present day and see that there has been guys like Zion. The media hypes up everything to get views and money. Dont buy into the media. They are scammers. Not even the athletes like 99% of the media. Because they make stuff up. And People that believe what they say dont even look to see if they're telling the truth. Most people just start repeating the media bs

Secondly, can you analyse different medical teams from franchise to franchise... For example it's known that Suns have poor Medical stuff, while the Nuggets have good one.

What about the way he runs, I saw somewhere a big reason why drose suffered so many non contact knee injuries was because of his running form he’d run with his heels hitting the ground first, putting a lot of force on his knees, ive been dealing with some knee problems in my right knee and have recently adjusted to running on the forefoot like Lebron and Westbrook do. It’s taken a lot of tension off knees and just feels like I’m exerting a lot less energy while playing. What do you think about this?
