I've found that acidic ingredients really decreases the soapy flavor, especially if it's crushed/finely chopped. So give it an extra squeeze of lemon or lime or more tomato sauce if you've got to eat it in something!

Its not a glitch its an extra ability and you might want to look into testing your sense of taste and/or smell. Having this ability has a high correlation with being a 'super' taster/smeller and companies pay good money to people with these senses to quality test their products.

The weird thing for me is that Cilantro sometimes tastes like soap. Other times, it tastes like nothing, and sometimes it's absolutely vile. I don't know if it's fresh vs. dried. I've had the same dish many times, and cilantro is an ingredient in it. Yet half the time it makes me gag, the other time I don't even notice it.

Cilantro is ok in tiny tiny tiny amounts. Cilantro is an extremely strong herb. For me, it doesn't taste like soap. For me, it's if an entire NBA team's extremely used wet socks was combined with beyond bad body odor that could gag you. Oddly enough I have no issues with coriander.

Raw cilantro tastes like soap to me, like a very floral soap. However, if it's cooked, It doesn't taste soapy, and dried coriander also tastes fine. Artificial sweeteners all have a very bitter aftertaste to me; I wonder if there is a connection.

I hate that artificially sweetened stuff in the UK is often not labelled as ‘no sugar added’ any more. You’ll buy something with artificial sweetener in it instead of sugar and then get hit with that awful taste. It’s so common that it’s often difficult to find the sugared version (I think this is due to the sugar tax).

Cooked (and powdered) cilantro somehow lacks whatever element makes people like me reject cilantro. There is a Peruvian dish, "seco de carne", that amounts to beef and potatoes stewed in a heavy sauce of ~1 lb of pure blendered cilantro that cooks for the entire 2+ hours with the meat, and it SOMEHOW no longer tastes like soap while still tasting very intensely like cilantro. I love it. Even my elderly white american mother loves it, and she has rejected everything else I've ever cooked with cilantro.

For those who are trying to listen to this recommendation. You also have to be aware that trying to get exposure to cilantro may make you very sick. I tried this myself and as a result, result I had all the symptoms of food poisoning for three months, I could not keep my food down in my stomach. And this was just because I added a leaf of cilantro twice in the space of two weeks and in the end, nobody questions peoples food preferences why would you torture yourself with something that makes you feel sick? Because for me this little experiment resulted in changing from pleasant smell of cilantro to now I have gag reflex every time I smell it. I’m not sure that that’s an improvement.

If you catch them before they start your order, you can ask for plain white rice. (Or demand it if they're being cranky that day.) That's what I do. Then skip the salsa, which has it. And I think their corn mix stuff has it, but I'm not sure. My usual order is white rice, chicken, black beans, queso blanco, motz and lots of lettuce. No cilantro in that. :)

I can some what taste the soapyness but I find it adds to the flavor. Like I dont know soap doesn’t taste too bad, especially a small one covered in an herby taste of green. It’s pretty good

I’ve only ever had one other person in my life who agreed with what I’m about to say so I know it sounds crazy but, for me it doesn’t even taste like soap it tastes the way a stink bug smells. I can still eat it in dishes (chipotle’s rice, salsas, Indian food etc) but if I get too big of a chunk I have to spit it out. My mom loves it and doesn’t have the glitch but my dad did. Weird software glitch to have but still super interesting!!

Was going to say use to have that soap taste but I refused to accept it as it was incorporated with dishes I really enjoyed (outside the cilantro) but over time the flavour changed to this beautiful herby bright citrusy peppery note that I actually cannot eat dishes without it now

I know this is off topic but I have almost the exact same spot as you do on your eye on my own (almost exact same position over iris/below the pupil and size of the lump). It makes me really happy to see someone else who has one. I grew up with it and ended up coming to love that little physical quirk and it wasn’t until I was an adult that doctors started asking me if I wanted it removed. It doesn’t effect my vision much other than changing my vision range slightly in my right eye and I’m both literally and figuratively attached to it at this point in my life. I’ve said no every time they’ve asked so they just measure it every year and move on. Idk, I just love seeing other people who have the thing people always seem to notice and ask me about, one of my longest running friends, the very first thing he said to me is “what the fuck is on your eye?!?” How can I hate something that led into close friendships?? Anyway, love your content and have your book towards the top of my “to read” pile along with my hardback cover of Grey’s Anatomy. Blend the old with the new!

Now the nonsensical proverb my grandma used to say makes a bit sense after all. (Only a little bit, though 😂) „it is all a matter of personal taste preferences“, said the monkey and bit into the bar of soap (used somewhat whenever she encountered someone having a very different taste than what she knows)

Interesting, as I was in Vietnam Cilantro was a very common herb in many meals there. I also do have the glitch myself, although I can bring myself to ignore it and in a way I like the taste.

Now it makes sense! For some reasons years ago I've tried one single time and I hated I couldn't understand why people liked it. Years later I've tried again and didn't taste that, but I actually loved it, but I had no prologued exposure or anything. And from there i do like cilantro and I'm not understanding why it tasted so bad the first time...

Gotta say, i either never had cilantro in my life or i had and thought it was parsley lol BUT, my sinusitis causes me to have very confused smell, which means very confused tastebuds as well. I will sometimes use ammonia to clean something, and my nose will interpret the smell as rotisserie chicken smell. Why? Absolutely no idea. I also have phantosmia, which means i will randomly have olfactory hallucinations. Will be chilling in my bed and suddenly smell cigarette smell, or burning smell, even when the windows are closed and there's no one home. Rarely the hallucination will be good, as they mostly make me smell smoke, but soooometimes i will get good ones Sinusitis gives you very funny experiences, but sadly makes me an extreme picky eater too

It used to taste like soap the first time I ate cilantro. Now, I really enjoy it. I make lazy salsa with it by blending canned tomatoes, lots of limes juice, onion, and jalapeños together. It is really great.

To those who love cilantro, they say it tastes "fresh". I used to hate cilantro!!! Now I can tolerate it and even enjoy it in some dishes, especially cooked. It has to be very fresh when raw. If the leaves are starting to turn, I can't stomach it! And it doesn't taste like soap but like how a sponge smells after it's been sitting out damp. So to me it tastes like dirty dish water - not soapy. I know I'm probably the only one that gets that! 😅

Cilantro doesn't taste like actual soap to me, but it does taste EXACTLY like the thrills gum here in Canada. Which is marketed as "soap gum" despite not really tasting like any actual soap I've ever (accidentally) tasted before.

It surely can be overcome. 😊 I used to experience this with cilantro. I couldn't breathe. But wished I didn't have that experience because I am a good cook and love experiencing food from as many different cultures as possible. Both cooked by other people and cooking it myself. I love learning how other cultures traditionally cook their dishes, cooking with fire, tools and methods that we don't have to use with all our "privilege" and modern conveniences. Once I learned how to properly use spices and herbs, cooking them with fats instead of vinegars, wine, tomatoes, astringents etc, I was able to balance and draw out flavors better and I don't get that soapy flavor/smell suffocating experience anymore. The way scent accentuates taste, factors a lot into the soapy problem. I discovered what I REALLY don't enjoy AT ALL, is Cumin and tomato based dishes and I cannot stand store bought tomatoes. I do like fresh tomatoes from a garden that are red, juicy and meaty, but still don't like tomato based dishes. The tomatoes in the store are a pathetic excuse for tomatoes and it's sad that it's the norm now and how many folks don't really know what a tomato is supposed to taste like. And despite being a good cook and understanding how spices, fats, acids interact when cooking and knowing how to properly use them, I just do not like tomatoes or Cumin at all. I've tried. Cumin has an almost similar soapy taste/smell. It tastes/smells like a chemical to me.

I hated cilanto in the past. Had to hide it under a lot of other aromatic ingredients. Now I can eat snd enjoy it as is, just as much as I love parsley and other herbs. Making pico de gallo? I'll definitely be chewing on a branch of cilantro while doing so xD I also jave a friend, who was extremely picky with food until she decided to.challange herself to just try everything at least twice. Now she actually likes everything as far as I'm aware.
