I disagree. My baby was 4 to 5 months old, and OBVIOUSLY needed to cool down; the beet-red face told the story. After all, 100°+ ferenheit is excess temperature for even babies. So, when we were riding in cars which had NO AIR CONDITIONING, my babies got extra water. It was a supplement, not a substitute for milk. Furthermore, I could not breastfeed while I was driving. I can agree with you IF there is no extreme high temperature involved.

My son is nearly 18. Back in early 2006, the health advisor told me to give my son some water in between feeds as he was hungry. I was 18 myself so I followed her advice. Thankfully he is fine. My daughter arrived 4 years later and I asked should I do the same again, and she said no and claimed she’d never given me that advice. I changed health advisors after that. My mom was there with me when she told me to do it, I hadn’t misheard her or misunderstood her. She was also a really rude person too, so I was glad to change her.

Ignorance like that is always scary af to learn about because while my dumb ass was never put in a position where I could give a baby water, one day I might unknowingly screw up with something equally fatal and I wouldn't even know. You're out here doing really good work. 😭

Its perfectly fine to not know, especially when its not even related to your life. When you do become a parent though, all of these things are suddenly expected of you as though its common knowledge, and No one will just casually bring it up, not even the pediatrician unless you ask. My wife and I didnt know that newborns need the pre-mixed formula, not the powder mix one. Pediatrician didn't tell us, parents didn't tell us, it's just something that people expect you to know already for some dumb reason.. Baby's doing just fine though. No big deal.

this guy is exaggerating. its not water thats the problem its large amounts of fluid imbalance/overloading that would be the issue- which would be hard to achieve for most sensible people. If you think about it - those who don't breastfeed - use water to make their formula. we also use "sugar water" in the hospital even for premi neonates to calm them down during a procedure for example - they can suck on small vials of it with no issues. So water is not toxic or anything, u just dont want to overload them with it ( which again the baby would likely refuse since they have small stomachs - and even with breastmilk - baby just vomits regularly cause of their limited stomach size - and its their way to stretch it too). and the 6 month mark is also dependent on the baby and how its developing in size and action etc. I mean even regular grown adults can get fluid overloaded and die from drinking too much water - but in reality this is pretty hard to achieve (unless the person is lacks all common sense I suppose) the main reason we dont recommend water is to make sure the limited stomach is not filled- since they need nutrients so dont want to risk malnutrition etc by occupying that space with water

It's not a statement on whether or not someone could have babies lol Is it wrong to verify if parents/caretakers are informed enough not to accidentally make babies sick or dead by giving them water? Both driving and rearing a child needs you to be knowlegable and competent in a lot of shit, and would lead to disastrous consequences when you fuck up. Would it really be unreasonable to make sure if parents are equipped to handle the huge task of raising a child? So we could aid the parents/caretakers otherwise??

@@zedantXiang it’s just far easier to kill people through ignorantly driving than through ignorantly raising a child. There are rules to the road, once you know them you are no longer ignorant. My mother studied child development in college and still felt “ignorant” as a parent, her mother was a school teacher and still struggled as a mother. There is no one book on being the perfect parent. Children are people and all people are different. Over my dead body will the government tell me that there is one perfect way to raise a child and that I need a license to do so. There is one perfect way to drive. It’s a dumb comparison. That’s it.

This is also why you should follow the formula to water ratios on the tin!!! Add the water first, then scoop the formula in so it’s accurate. Accidentally forgetting or adding a scoop every once in a while won’t hurt much but you shouldn’t be diluting formula on purpose - it happens with people who are struggling to feed their children, or sometimes people simply don’t know this. Her doctor repeatedly told her family to not feed her anything at all for the moment, but then came the grandma whom secretly gave her water and she ended up gone, yet the grandma insisted that she kept crying due to thirst. Till the end the grandma insisted that she’s innocent and never felt remorse, meanwhile the baby’s father greatly regretted leaving his baby alone with his mother and letting her do as she wanted to his baby. The scary thing is it’s common here where old women feed their grandchildren stuff babies that tiny musn’t have, and when they’re told not to do it by their kids (the babies’ parents) then they’ll get angry while saying that they had raised them (the babies’ parents) well so they know better, meanwhile in reality not all of those old women’s children survived till adulthood for obvious reasons 😢

@@mr.peanutbutter5423 there's no "toxic" chemicals in water, at least not in the concentrations that we use them in. There's stuff like chlorine, but that's only dangerous in higher concentrations, in the small concentrations it's used and it's only dangerous to things like bacteria. Any place that has clean water uses these same chemicals or something similar. In reality, people just got really lucky that giving their kids water didn't kill them. Think about how recent instant communication is. If a kid died of water intoxication forty years ago, not only would they have been exposed to a bunch of other dangerous stuff that could have killed them first, but it's hard to communicate that kind of information beyond people who you interact with on a daily basis. It's not that these things didn't happen in the past, but that we can know about them more easily now.

What I found really cool when breastfeeding was, when I found out, the density of breast milk varies. I was wondering why on very hot days my babies were constantly demanding the breast, but only taking a few sips and then they'd leave me with a dripping, full breast. I then found out in the beginning of a breast milk meal the milk contains more water than later during the meal. So if they needed more liquids because they were sweating a lot, they'd have more, but quicker meals. They just knew by themselves how to make sure they'd get the appropriate nutrients.

Nigerian babies don't need water. Hospitals in Nigeria advise mothers not to give their babies water

The thing is that my parents sometimes gave my siblings water. This was when they were around 5 months old or younger, they'd always crawl to them and stand up while holding their leg and beg for whatever they were drinking in their cup. It would sometimes be water, juice, or even soda. They really liked orange juice and would try to drink the whole cup of soda but when it came to water they'd spit it out.

I had my daughter in the late 80's and was sent home from the hospital with bottles of "nursery water". That's what it was called. You could even buy it in the stores in the baby food aisle. The rules for babies are constantly changing

I also heard that parents need to be careful when preparing formula milk as if too much water is added, it can also lead to water intoxication.

Thank you for saying breast or formula. There is so much pressures on mothers to breastfeed. I was able to to do 12 weeks with one breast and it really overshadowed all the happiness I should been feeling with my son. Instead I was a mess worried about my milk supply. Thanks once again :-)

The only time my babies got any type of water was because some of them had colic & an old home recipe is fennel seed tea/water. You don't give them alot, less than an ounce & it helps with colic, I talked to my pediatrician before I did so & was told it was safe as long as it wasn't all the time & only a tiny amount. The fennel seed tea helped sometimes. When my 2nd child came tho they finally had infant gas meds which helped more so I stopped doing the fennel seed tea.

Nope. I have 3 kids. Never knew. Went to parenting classes, no idea. I knew about no honey, but I gave one of my kids a strawberry once, apparently that is a no-no too. But honestly, up to a few months old, you are trying to get them as many calories as you can becasue they are growing so fast and can't take all that much volume. So it never occurred to me to give them water. If anything I'd be tempted to under-dilute formula.

My ex mother in law was trying to tell me to give my 2 month old water to go to bed with and thank God my mom told me babies can't drink water that young lol. My ex mil also believed that babies are still supposed to sleep only on their stomachs and the few times she watched my daughter she put her on her stomach to sleep before she was able to roll. And fell asleep with her on the couch. Pretty much every no no you can think of, she did. She doesnt watch her even now as a toddler I don't trust her lol.
@TheMrTataaa

The thing is, the stomach thingy is a lil bit correct. Making babies sleep on their stomach will lessen their chance of puking (the gastro esophageal reflux), BUT it also increases chance of SIDS /Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Between puking and dying I think we know which one is more dangerous😅
@ChinchillaQueen
@ChinchillaQueen Жыл бұрын
Yeah. Don't feed your baby anything other breast milk or formula until they are around 6 months old. Their systems can't handle it. Obviously, breastfeeding is the best way to go if you can do it but the other is fed is best. The laying on the stomach thing? Makes sense. Some babies tolerate sleeping on their backs a lot more than others. Mine hated sleeping on their backs and would only sleep on their stomachs. It just meant we did a lot more monitoring for them until they could move themselves into whatever position they wanted themselves in. All the child no-nos? Yeah. My dad tested that. He was put in charge of my boys for a little while and they are toddlers but they had also never seen a wood stove being used before and my parents only have a single gate separating the wood stove from the walkway and grasping hands. I came home to dad outside and him telling me the boys were told to sit and watch a movie. 2-year-olds and 4-year-olds do not do sit and watch well and while they thankfully did not get interested in the very hot wood stove, they can open gates very well, they did get into everything else and I strong-armed my dad into helping me clean up the three hours mess the boys had managed to make in less than five minutes. He is now supervised when it comes to watching them

Breastfeeding is the best way to keep a baby healthy. In my country we have milk banks, which takes donations from pregnant women and mothers that produces a good amount of milk. You just need to collect and freeze it for later use!
