My therapist was a fan of behavioural activation. It was so hard to get started going for a walk every day but it worked. And realizing that listening to podcasts made going for a walk more bearable helped me stick to it.

My friend is a child psychologist and she wishes all families who have a child(ren) in therapy also sought family therapy. Oftentimes, there are complex family dynamics that create or exacerbate the issue(s) that she sees in her clients. She can only focus on the individual and what is in their control. Where family therapy has the opportunity to detangle the dynamics and lead to a healthier outcome for everyone long-term.

I had a therapist who forced me to do family therapy. Pls don’t force kids to do that. It can make things worse bc the parents start to believe the therapist is manipulating the child against them and “poisoning” their minds

5:05 "it shouldn't take the patient to pull those boundaries back up though" Idk if this is the same in the UK but here in Australia your therapist shouldn't even initiate contact out in public as it is considered a breach of privacy. If the therapist is with their friends/family and they ask "oh who is that?" they either have to lie or avoid the question which makes it clear that they are a patient and the same goes for if the patient is with or around people they know. And that is ESPECIALLY important because if they were with - say… an abusive partner who just stepped out for a moment and saw them talking to someone - that can put the patient in real danger by bringing up a lot of questions from anyone they're with or who sees them. So yeah it's not great that Dr. Kinbott started basically doing therapy in the street (yikes!) but it's also actually not even great that she even acknowledged Wednesdays existence (since Wednesday is not the one who initiated the interaction)

In Israel, we have “parents counseling,” which is basically couples therapy where the main topic is the kids. It’s often used in conjunction with psychotherapy for small disabled kids. It was very useful for us after one of our kids was diagnosed autistic if only because that made me realize I was autistic, so sometimes there was conflict based on our different reactions to the diagnosis.

The "emotional morse code" comment resonates a LOT with me (hi, I'm autistic). My favorite metaphor is that my antenna for nonverbal communication hasn't been properly connected, or indeed that I'm not receiving on that particular channel, but not knowing morse code is a perfectly viable metaphor, too.

In response to your point about family therapy being very successful: I have recently been listening to a bunch of narrations of various Reddit stories (r/AITA, r/relationships, etc.) and nearly every instance of family therapy that pops up there has seemed very toxic. (Yes, I'm sure Reddit is by no means a representative sample of successful treatment.) Most often, a child will go. Then after a period of time where the therapist will build rapport with the child, the child will open up and share what has actually been troubling them, and then the parents will disagree with this point and punish the child outside of the session. I can see how couples' therapy can be powerful, when both participants have enough autonomy outside of the session to enforce their own boundaries. But I cannot see a good reason for a child who isn't sharing what's bothering them, for fear of reprisal from their parents, to suddenly open up to those same parents. No matter how much the session is pitched as a safe space, it's only safe inside there... but what is said can absolutely come back to haunt you.

I'd hope that child psych specialists and social workers who do family therapy are trained on how to identify these situations. I know some people as kids regret confiding in adults who turn out to be mandatory reporters and then their life gets even more messed up, when all they wanted was someone to share their burden with.

When I started therapy, I was going to a place that was used for therapists to get experience as part of their qualification. One of the rules the first lady I spoke to said was that if she saw me in the street, she would not engage or acknowledge me to avoid any uncomfortable questions either from my friends/family/whoever I was with or hers. Is this standard?

My friend was at the end of his career as a psychiatrist. He said the only thing he had ever done to help his patients was prescribing medications. This happened in the eighties😮😢

Sorry to add another suggestion to your ever growing watchlist, but would you ever consider reacting to 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' that story, the book and the film have been life-changing for me and so many others I know in the mental health community. Also, another great video, this is genuinely one of my favourite channels! You definitely deserve a larger following! I find it so impressive that you manage to work as a doctor and manage this channel, I can't manage my time and I literally don't do anything! (I've been in hospital for a long time, so... I'd like to remind everyone, in addition to your comment about conversion therapy still not being banned in the UK, that ABA is conversion therapy for Autistic people. For anyone reading this and interested, what small (and not so small) autistic people need is forms of therapy that help them be able to deal with this NT world without crashing and burning. This MUST be in small increments to allow for processing time not in the cash cow intense and long sessons that are torture.

Watching your review of this Wednesday episode, I remembered a "real" lycanthropy case here in Spain that I used to believe that it was just a small village story but Wikipedia says it's the only real psychiatric lycanthropy case documented, Manuel Blanco Romasanta. There's even a movie about him but I'm not sure whether the psychiatric background of the story is true or not. Did you know that lycanthropy case?

I've caught flak in the past in the in the comparison, but therapy is uncomfortably like kintsukugori where the patient has to accept they're broken before the scientific healing art of psychiatry will ever take hold, which I find ridiculous as patients are beautifully healed (myself hopefully included) if the right methodologies were employed to successfully heal the issues that lead patients to counseling &/ pharmacology.

Hope you enjoyed the show, it's fun. I wasn't a huge fan of the shrink, though, too much assuming and pushing and not enough open questions. And she read Wednesday's books without asking first, which feels uncool to me, like undermining the patent a bit. But I've had a fair amount of therapy in the states (where shrink is a normal term), maybe it's different across the pond.

It's weird how people target Wednesday as being "neurodivergent" because of the "emotional morse code" line, but don't at all address how the boy is lacking in "cognitive empathy" to have come to a conclusion of their relationship. What signs were expressed by Wednesday that made him believe they were more than just friends? Why should she have been believing such actions by him meant they were more than just friends? As viewers, they've literally had like three interactions. There's no reason to think Wednesday is neurodivergent based on this. It's not always a lack of cognitive empathy when other people are just being irrational and egotistical themselves. This youtube rabbit hole of therapists "dissecting" pop culture is weird. No wonder why so many young people think they are "neurodivergent" for simply sharing some basic aspects of human expression.

At no point Dr Elliot uses that sentence to diagnose Wednesday, he only says that thought resonates with neurodivergent people. And I actually don’t get people saying that Tyler had no reason to think Wednesday liked him: for him it looked like she was always going after him: sending thing after him to get in touch on first episode and ask him to help her run away, always appear out of nowhere to talk and ask questions - to Tyler specifically, because on the episode Xavier is in the cafe she basically ignores him. It’s understandable that someone could see that as signs of interest, as the same time that someone could do that with no interest without deceiving the other person. It’s just a matter of communication

It was never meant as a personal identifier, but to explain how we are ALL a part of diverse nature of neuroscience. The thought in question resonates with MOST people who encounter events where they perceive something differently than other. @@apieceofschmitt well, the word neurodivergence is different from neurodiversity, NEURODIVERGENT is used as a non-medical umbrella term for people who are not considered “neurotypical”. You can think that’s al bullshit, but it doesn’t mean that meaning doesn’t exist. Also you were kinda saying Tyler had no excuses to think that way, you were the one who said Tyler was lacking in cognitive empathy for coming to a conclusion about his relationship with Wednesday and questioned what signs existed of that, I was just giving my point of view. We can discuss societal norms of behavior and how abnormal behavior can cause distress, but such doesn't define a group based on neurology. And we all often have shared experiences where our behavior is deemed abnormal and caused us distress. So who exactly gets classified into neurodivergent and who does not? How "divergent" must you be to "gain membership" in this group association? I just find it weird the seeking of niche groups of identity and thus the gatekeeping that comes with such.

I would love to see you do a video on how toxic and anti-trans the UK has become, and how much more dangerous it is now to be visually transgender (or even have someone assume you're trans even if you're cis). I don't think this is being talked about enough in detail. People know there's a rise in transphobia, but not how badly it's effecting the community, our healthcare, etc. Maybe you could bring in some UK trans peeps to speak about it?
