Doctor's Guide to Colby Covington BROKEN JAW at UFC 245 - I WAS SHOCKED!

After Colby Covington took a punch to the jaw from Kamaru Usman at UFC 245 and then told his team he broke his jaw, I was shocked and initially thought there was no he was actually still fighting with a broken jaw. Turns out he did in fact fracture his jaw during his defeat against Usman and this has to make him one of the toughest fighters out there!

@@AndrewChristian-bg6vr, yes it is! I do have to say, though, there isn't anything quite as uncomfortable as having your jaw wired shut for a couple months, or having metal plates screwed into your jaw to hold it together (I have had both). Outside of broken or missing ribs, it is something else to experience pain wise. A good shot to the nose will take you out hard and fast, but the recovery isn't quite as painful or bad in my experience. I have broken my nose 3 times, and only one was a perfect knockout shot, and every time was a much easier and quicker recovery. I would take that nose shot a hundred times over a broken or fractured jaw. Now, that is just my experience, though. I am sure there are a lot of folks who may say different. 😊😊

When breaking and fractures happens, you not only feel it, it sends the neural warnings up to your brain, to the whole body and slows down the heart and other organs to compensate the injury. I just sprained my previously dislocated rotator cuff and I was covered in sweat and puked.. Colby really had the fight in his heart and the only next warrior to forego such arduous task just as Arlovski survived the whole fight with all his teeth 😬 chipped due to his broken jaw a few years back.

I think that comes down to how you handle pain and anxiety and stress. All of that combined will make you sick. I work a physical labor job so it is common for me to fracture my fingers or knuckles working with heavy wood and a chipper. I've probably had at least 6 or 7 micro fractures in my fingers over the course of 3 years. I fractured my collar bone placing a log on my shoulder. And I dropped a 60 pound surface matt for heavy truck tires on my left shin bone. I had shin splints from that. Life sucks brother. No sports or running around. Just working life.

Two months later and I finally get my MRI. They had diagnosed me with A grade l sprain of the MCL and Mild tendinosis in my patellar and quadricep tendon. Till this day I’m having a lot of pain still. All I need to know is how to treat it but I still can’t seem to grasp how to, even after searching on KZbin and google. You’re literally the only person I can think of who would most likely know how to treat this. I’m going insane not being able to squat, deadlift, power clean, etc.. because of this pain. I hated colby before this fight, after watching it, he is one of my favorite fighters, Regardless of his dumb personality. ALSO: thanks for saying that *anecdotally* the open jaw may make a difference but literature shows no correlation. This gives a decent base to start evaluation of the hit itself from, and allows people to draw their own conclusion like an MD would when shown the diagnostic evidence. Solid work as always.

He acts like that because ufc wanted to resign him for being too boring and that's why he is being fake, now he understands that in order to make money, you gotta be relevant. UFC is a corrupted organization! That is what he said.

@Joe Sudz Only because you don't seem to know anything about the sport or have any of your own opinions. I understand that the sport is currently thriving because of fans like you, and that's great, but at a certain point you should realize that your comments are a self-own.

@Joe Sudz I'm certainly not offended. It's fine that you don't enjoy fighters with a strong wrestling base. I have my own biases too. We all do. We all have our own tastes. All that aside, I find your assessment of Covington overly reductive and simple. We get a fight of the year contender which had zero takedowns and you have temerity to call him a 'crotch sniffer'. I'm not a fan of Colby the character, but Colby the fighter deserves more than that.

Doctor i had a broken jaw in two places ( parasymphisis and condyle) from a punch on the cheek from the back and falling on the floor after that, i didnt feel much pain and kept on going for 4 days untill i went to the dentist for chipped teeth and he saw that and i went through surgery in the hospital. What are the consequences could i go back to practicing combat sports normally or will it be weakened? Thank you

That disrespectful jaw got fractured. Fuck Colby and his disrespectful mouth. Trash talking is inevitable in combat. But once you start attacking a persons people and heritage it gets personal. Colby disrespected the dead. If Usman would have said the same thing about Colby and Americans, people would have loved that Colby broke Usmans jaw.

Excellent explanation of the treatment of the mandibular fracture of Colby Covington, I´m Sports Dentistry, In recent research it is very uncommon for a fracture to occur in the middle of the jaw. a custom-made mouth guard, adjusted and marked with the traces of the occlusal surfaces of the mandibular molars prevents it from moving or sliding between the teeth and provides a stable and fixed jaw position in relation to the skull, that is its function, acutua like a shock absorber, sin embargo, si no es hecho a la medida, esta mal ajustado o abre la boca cuando el golpe llega tiene mayor mayor probabilidad que sufra una fractura. However, if it is not custom-made, it is poorly adjusted or opens the mouth when the blow arrives is more likely to suffer a fracture. Regards.

I strongly dislike Colby and everything he represents. But damn, I was legitimately impressed with his fighting ability, cardio and his toughness. What a beast. Reminded me of Rory MacDonald vs Lawler in their 2nd fight when Rory just refused to quit and his body gave up before his mentality did.

Can't comment on any statistics regarding open versus closed mouth fractures, but a mouth guard only works when you're biting down on it.
@bigimportantman1544
@bigimportantman1544 4 жыл бұрын
Without being anecdotal, clinching a mouthpiece acts acts as a bind to disperse any lateral impact on the lower jaw much more evenly throughout the skull. If there is no friction between your teeth and the lower jaw is hit cleanly from the side, 100% of that force is stressed on the hinge of your jaw and it’s no bueno.

Dear Brian, I just had my jaw-wired shut after a fight. I fractured it in both sides (broken jaw) and right now it is completely swollen and I look like one of Super Mario's little monsters. I want to ask you those 2 questions, and please, I would appreciate it a ton if you could answer them: 1. Will my jaw completely heal after? Like will my face look the same, and do you think I could actually get in fights again or is it too risky (I am competing in boxing so this is one of my biggest concerns)? 2. Do you think I can ever again be the same confident as I was before my injury? I have a broken hand, but I still act normal without letting it limit the choices I make. Do you think I can act the same with my jaw? I know I should avoid fights, but if let's say I get in one: should I try to avoid altercations by all costs now? Let me know if you have any other advice on how to get over this as well. Sorry if this is confusing cause it's in email-form, I just think it is easier to read like that and it is taken more seriously. Kind regards, George
