I was driving in a blizzard. The speed limit was slowed to 10 miles per hour. I drive that normal takes 2 hours took almost 7 hours. I was going down hill, with chains, slowly pumping at the breaks and still slide out. We ending up spinning around to face traffic. There was a semi coming down the hill. Because of the grade and snow the were having a hard time getting down the hill and wouldn't have been able to stop. I literally had just enough time to back up, turn around, and start driving again. My buddy I was traveling with asked me how I did that and stayed so calm. I just answered 30 years of gaming.

Can't relate. I don't use video games to forget about anxiety. I have learned enough from them that the moment you have anxiety, you make sure to destroy it right then and there. I play video games for fun and to improve my mental health and it's been working quite well. I have improved a lot.

@TRINITY-626
@TRINITY-626 2 ай бұрын
This is a perfect example of why they said in my group therapy class not to use your hobby as a form of escapism rather than relaxation. When you play video games to escape your anxiety, it simply comes back with a vengeance once the gaming is over with. When you play them as an activity of enjoyment and relaxation, they complement your mental health instead of placing a temporary mask over your disorder(s). So it's important to learn other coping mechanisms and strategies, plus engaging in exposure therapy so that you're not simply hiding from your fears, but actively engaging them in order to build up courage.

No way I've been saying this for years. My three boys all game. It's their happy place, their safe space, a place they can challenge themselves to get better at something they enjoy. Their fine motor skills are incredible as is their hand eye coordination. Obviously they can't game all day but overall the positives far outweigh the negatives, in our family's case at least. Not to mention Minecraft has proven educational benefits and educators can access Minecraft Education as a learning tool.

@@mythl2179 I really, truly hope you didn't take my sarcastic joke seriously... And so it would mean you're asking me to go on google to delve deeper into topic of healthy gaming. Yeah, I absolutely could read more scientific research about it as there's a lot of it already - but 1) I would gladly hear dr. Mike's opinion on this, as I know at least a bit the research behind it already; and 2) video form of information from someone so easy to understand yet relatable as dr. Mike is much better way of educating those less willing to read research and more willing to judge just because "gaming is bad". So really, "google it" isn't an answer here as I - we - are asking for dr. Mike opinion and so, video on this topic.

Not really related, but my favorite game jumpscare is in Silent Hill. There is a room in the normal world school where you find a cat. It jumps out and runs away. There’s a key there. Later, when you go to the same room in Otherworld, the same locker has nothing but a huge blood splatter. The implications are terrifying. As you walk away while still thinking about this, a body falls out of a nearby locker, with no sound but a thud.

Even sight reading doesn't require quick reaction time, because the goal isn't to play a note immediately as you see it. The amount of full body chills I just got from hearing this is awesomeness!!! Funnily enough I don’t get angry at video games anymore. I may curse at something I did wrong or a play I lost in, but it’s not violent nor angry. It’ll sound as such but that’s from my understanding of what people expect from gamers. Even though I rarely interact with people with microphones. I listen to the in game audio and that takes my attention away from toxic people.

In online fps, you take in a continuous stream of stimuli such as environmental sounds and voice communication, visual cues and haptic feedback from controllers to make split second decisions on where to go, what to use, and how to cascade actions toward ever-changing short term goals to achieve the win in matches. Its a real brain exercise, especially when you play to win
