Okay so Dormamu exists outside of time, so Dr Strange brought time with him to Dormamu when he went to "Bargain" with him. But he looped it so Steven is always coming and Dormamu basically can't leave that moment, constantly reliving it. Hence why he becomes Dr Strange's prisoner. Essentially he just outsmarted him.

To start with: Dormammu and the Dark Dimension being "outside time" just means that within that sphere of influence, time has no semblence of linear progression. In our universe, we perceive time as linear: one event follows a previous event, which follows a previous event, etc. Depending on continuity, Dormammu is the reason behind this. As a higher-order cosmic being, his existence shapes his home dimension, just as his home dimension shapes himself. Linear time doesn't exist in the Dark Dimension because it either never did and/or Dorammus existence precludes it. This doesn't mean things can't die, just that they won't from old age. Dormammu is also nigh all-powerful in the Dark Dimension, death is something that can only happen with his active participation or acknowlegement. The time loop that Doctor Strange employs is only possible because of the Eye of Agamotto (Time Stone). As one the six Infinity Stones, it is a concentrated ingot of dimensional reality. By harnessing the stone, Strange usurps some of the Dark Dimension's physical laws and essentially forces his will on Dormammus reality, placing a construct of time within the dimensional boundaries. The reason Dormammu could see through the time loop was that he is a cosmic being in his own home dimension, that's basically a God (capital G). Time is not linear to him in the Dark Dimension, so while the Time Stone can enforce the resetting of physical space in a time loop, it couldn't prevent a cosmic entity from noticing the disparity of time in a timeless place. At least, that's my take on it.

Hey Tori and Hannah, the issue about the hands and the need to repair them was explained by the great one. ------ When she was watching the lighting strike, just before her death. ------- She stated that Dr Strange is one this journey after his accident because he has a higher purpose. ------ He can save one person with his actions or billions across the universe. ------ Whst is more important. -------- He did medicine to drive his own ego, now he is on a selfless path as a purveyor of the mystical arts.

Regarding his hands, one comment mentioned his conversation with The Ancient One and his realization of a higher purpose, which is spot on. But really, his unsteady hands are absolutely inconsequential now. Anything he would have required a steady hand for he can use his magic to accomplish. Even something as trivial as driving his Lamborghinis. If he can sleep with his physical body and read volumes of books on sorcery, he can definitely make a projection to drive for him. Hands are now totally obsolete.

Dormammu being outside of time is the main reason the time loop works on him. Strange can't use that method to beat villains like Thanos.

On time: YOU exist in a universe where time only moves forward. Our universe is moving from a complex state to a more simple and cooler state because of entropy. You can't go back but you're always moving forward. There is always change. Our universe is cooling. Dormamu lives in a reality where reality moves forward but there is no universal automatic entropy. Things still happen, but the universe perhaps isn't expanding. His universe is not breaking down and cooling to a simpler one. A time loop is just as alien to you as it is to Dormamu. It's just as if there were no light in the dark dimension. Just because there is no light, it doesn't mean that a flashlight won't work there.

28:00-28:08 The Cloak of Levitation is a powerful and sentient relic. It observed Doctor Strange defending the sanctum, against overwhelming odds. It deemed him worthy, and it chose him, "Ready or not" 33:55-34:00 Seriously, Hannah, Tori. After going through what Christine just went through. If you were in her place, would you react any better to the mop and bucket falling over behind you right then? [Pretty sure I would] 40:22-40:30 Cloak of Levitation enters _Mom mode_ "Oh, little dear, let me wipe that off you. We must have you at your best." 41:25 To bring up another "One name, just one name. Name." Cher -- "If I could turn back time..." Oh wait... I *can!* 43:30-43:45 "If he exists outside of time, how is he engaging with him in time right now?" Simple explanation: Time exists *outside* The Dark Dimension. By crossing into The Dark Dimension, Strange brought time with him, and looped it, from the dimension he came from (which in effect, firstly binds The Dark Dimension's extension to its portal through its agents to Earth, to that point in time. Since Strange is of that time (and is wielding a power which will be explained shortly) he looped the interaction of himself and Dormamu to that interaction within the confines of that brief time, which would then mean Dormamu cannot continue outside that constraint, until it is resolved. [Okay, reading it back, it's straight forward, but not "simple" But I'm pretty sure you will be able to keep up.] You can not interact with someone/something in time, without connecting to it in at least a small way. In that interaction you create a connection, and for that instant, time exists. Relative to that instant, time has access to you. Normally this wouldn't be a problem for a timeless entity, but when time is being manipulated, it is a considerable vulnerability. [and again, I will mention the power which will be explained shortly being involved] 46:10-46:15 The power I mentioned is an Infinity Stone, specifically, the Time Stone. In answer to your question about going back and fixing his hands. He would need someone else to use the stone to affect him without affecting others, if he used it on himself, he would fix his hands in the past, thus never have reason to seek Karma-Taj, thus would never have access to the stone, and thus could not go back to fix his hands, and in addition, he would give the world to Dormamu since he would never have the stone to trap Dormamu.

Tori isn't wrong, this movie is Inception level trippy but it's a really good one. Btw, a neurosurgeon can make anywhere from $90k-$1M a year(I may be a little off on that figure). So Strange being loaded means he was very successful. Also fun fact, there are actually TWO men named Benedict in this movie: Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong(who plays Wong ironically).

I 100% sympathize with Dr. Strange after the car accident and recovering from severe nerve damage as I was born with a spinal defect which eventually caused me to have severe spinal nerve damage. I was born with minor nerve damage but at 19 years old it got way worse due to an accident while playing basketball to where I slowly started becoming partially paralyzed. 18 years after the accident I now can't stand without needing to hold onto something for balance and can't walk without the use of canes and only very short distances before needing to rest, or else my legs feel like they're going to fall off and I'm out of breath (200-ish feet).

43:57 Strange used the time stone to trap Dormamu in a bubble of time… which removed Dormamu from his environment which was outside time- basically strange used the time stone, made a small room of time, pull Dormamu in, and closed that door trapping them both in the time loop

The bad wizards all cast spells on themselves when they realized what Strange was doing. Magic is magic because it doesn't obey the "rules." It's sort of like how Stephen's astral form was reading while his body was asleep -- In the Dark Dimension a sort of time still passes, but your body isn't aging, so you won't get tired, or hungry, or die of old age.

Doctor Strange is also using an Infinity stone (Time Stone) and not even Dormammu nor the dark dimension can resist its power so that's how Strange was able to conjure a time loop with Dormammu forcing this entity to accept the bargain. Also using an Infinity Stone can corrupt reality and the multi-verses so using it to go back in time before the car crash would be unwise. There is a quote in a future marvel movie about changing the past, doesn't change the future as well. Lol and I'm enjoying all these reactions! I love the MCU. The Infinity Saga is amazing and Phase 3 is so epic

My favorite RttM ladies together again! I'm here for it, and the amazing facial expression responses. 😀 Previous Movie Crossover Moment: "I've got a 35 year old Air Force colonel, crushed his spine in some kind of experimental armor." Hey Rhodey. Dr. Strange finds you boring. Hope you recover anyway. Tori's over the top reactions make my day. We're barely in and she's gotten three zooms already. 😀Hannah's more sedate (not always by much), but the reaction zooms on both of them are always fun. Ladies, it amuses me how much you play with your hair. You both have beautiful hair so I get it, but, dang. 😀 So many great zooms. But the overarching surreality of this makes that easy to arrange. There's going to be so much that is mindbending here, so all the more reason for the reactions. 😀 The cloak is awesome. 😀 After Christine saves Stephen in the hospital I think she deserves a looooooong vacation. Like, several months. And the last shriek as the mop falls is classic. 😀 "Are you kidding me?" Poor Christine. 😀 Dorrmamu gives his acolytes a type of eternal life, though he lies about how it works. Strange isn't a follower of Doormamu, so he can die in the Dark Dimension. As we see. Repeatedly. Dorrmamu exists outside of time. I'm not even sure how to try to make this make sense. I grasp the concept, but even though I am a writer I'm not sure how to put it into words. He's not a part of a world with time in the same way that we're not a part of the microscopic world. Our skin teems with microscopic life, but we are generally not affected by it. It is still there, living and dying, going about it's myriad infinitesimal and possibly convoluted moments of living and dying, with generations of such life potentially living and dying in the space of a day, of an hour, perhaps even of a minute. If such creatures were aware of us and capable of thought, we would seem to live lives outside of their experience and, effectively, outside of their sense of time. That's my best explanation for Dorrmamu living outside of time. He is affected by it, but not remotely like we are, infinitesimal and unnoticed creatures that we are to him. But it can still be frustrating to be effectively captured by a nothing and stuck in a miserable situation for far too long because of it. Like the tiny nothings of bacteria or viruses that can lay us up for too long feeling miserable. Mordo confused me throughout this movie. 😀 In the comics I read when I was young Mordo was ALWAYS a villain. I spent the entire movie waiting for him to turn on Strange and the Ancient One, but he never did until the end when he disagreed with their doctrine. It was a neat twist to see him as a good(ish) guy throughout the movie and only have him not quite become a villain (though Johnathan Pangborn would not agree) but just walk away from the others.

Apparently, there was a line originally in the script where Strange said to Domammu that they've done it a thousand times. So, it was at least a thousand deaths that Strange experienced and remembered. It is one of the most badass stands in the MCU.

Welcome back, ladies. A couple of Easter eggs from this movie: 1) While he was driving before the accident, the caller mentioned a young air force colonel who suffered a spinal injury. This was a veiled reference to Rhodey (War Machine) after Civil War. 2) The item Strange picked up at the sanctum that looked like a flashlight was called The Evil Eye. It is a relic of immense power that most entities feared. 3) The Cloak of Levitation also kind of has a will of its own. I was going to address the time loop that Strange caught Dormmamu in, but that would contain spoilers.

The short answer to how Dr Strange is able to trap Dormammu in a time loop, when Dormammu exists outside of time within the Dark Dimension where he is basically a god, lies in the fact that the Eye of Agamotto that Dr Strange wields contains an Infinity Stone (more about these in later movies, so no spoilers now), specifically the Time stone. And the power of the Infinity Stones trumps Dormammu's absolute power over the Dark Dimension, being an ingot of concentrated existence. One that I haven't figured out, is why the Ancient One borrowed power from the Dark Dimension to extend her life, when she had an even greater power sitting there collecting dust in her own library, one specifically about Time. Perhaps she simply didn't know how to use it for this purpose initially, when the opportunity to draw power from the Dark Dimension presented itself. Later, after a very long life of practice and study, she may have been able then to use the Time stone for this purpose and stop using the Dark Dimension power, but by then it was too late, and the Dark Dimension had its hooks in her. But that's just my guess.

Though Dormammu exists outside of time, Doctor Strange brought time TO HIM with the Time Stone inside the eye pendant. And as we know, infinity stones are total and absolute, their power is above everyone and everything, therefore even Dormammu's dimension which normally does not have time, was brought low by the time stone because infinity stones trump everything as they are the embodiments of the six concepts that govern the entire universe, those being: - Power, Reality, Space, Mind, Soul, and Time. Each of the six infinity stone has total power over one of these concepts, and because their power is absolute - even Dormammu who is timeless and deathless cannot avoid it.

I have a soft spot for this one. At some age I was familiar with the character and origin. I really liked the vastness of it and those expanded concepts of time, space and metaphysics. It also, and I'm not sure this actually did inspire Doctor Strange, has a semblance to the book Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes, a favorite novel of mine as a child, where the main character is highly skilled but arrogant but after a tragedy ruins his hand he ends up growing into a sense of greater humility. I at some point had a toy of Doctor Strange that I ended donating to children later just due to my appreciation of the character. So needless to say I was excited about the film and very pleased with it despite it perhaps not being one of the most noted of the MCU films. The overall look, the casting and the story potency was very well executed I thought.

Dr. Strange has always been one of Marvel's best not-quite-a-superhero superhero. Its original concept using artwork by the imaginative Steve Ditko gave readers a whole new visual experience, but wasn't thought out to the nth degree, obviously. Like most comics of the time it was just an episode to episode storytelling, with whatever worked put in to move the story along. It wasn't until decades later that writers tried to make some logical sense of everything and retcon the Marvel universe. Some of it works, some doesn't. In short, it's just fun fantasy. Don't overthink it. Also, as a kid from the 70s I can only imagine how really trippy this movie would be on acid (not recommending it, of course). Thanks for the reaction.

Doctor Strange was able to bring time to the dark dimension using the time stone. Its power predates the universe and could thus be used to create a time loop in a place devoid of time.

I think people already provided good explanations of Dormamu entrapment (Strange enforcing linear time and time loop to his dimension with an infinity stone). But i always assumed this was because Dormamu came to our plane, which has linear time, so it affected him. First explanation is probably the correct one, but mine sounds not bad either :D Oh, btw, Benedict Cumberbatch also voiced Dormamu ;)

This is an excellent Marvel film! Saw this in the theater and the effects were even better on the big screen. I've read a few comics about Doctor Strange growing up so have very little info on the character but Benedict Cumberbatch pulled it off. Can't wait until you get to the sequel for this one!

Dark dimensions has no time and its the doom place of dermamu like a trash universe , dr. Strange can control time and make spell so he cast time loop at the same spot over and over again.

I think because Dor mamu is merging his dimension and our dimension together so non time and time are blending together that might create something that is making him being bind to time 44:15 like when you visit a relative or friends house and you are bound by their norms of the house

I kinda feel like they missed the mark completely by not having Dormammu as the main antagonist as opposed to a follower of Dormammu. They also could have easily cast Mads Mikkelsen as the voice of Dormammu.

Trying to apply logic to a movie based on magic is futile. But in this instance, Strange used an Infinity Stone. Infinity Stones are more powerful than even Dormamu.

It is weird that one guy who has control of time and the other who exist outside of time meets and the guy who has time wins maybe the reason could be that he wears the time on himself and not controls the surroundings that that are existing outside of time which can make it make sense
