"The Dark Dimension is a place beyond time." They said that several times. Strange even says it just before he floats in there. Dormammu could not break out of the spell because he has NO CONCEPT OR EXPERIENCE OF TIME.

But honestly, Kaecilius is almost incidental to the film, like Zemo, and I have no problem with that. They serve the stories. This film aims to set up the character of Strange, as well as his two most infamous foes, Mordo and Dormammu. I feel it accomplishes both. Dormammu's got a grudge and Mordo's got a vendetta.

That scene where the cloak was rubbing his face, it was appropriate in my opinion, because if you watch closely, you can see that he's wiping his tears. Which I think was quite touching, but it came off as comedic because I don't think many people noticed that.

@maragathm8 жыл бұрын
I think that scene was turned comedic because of Strange reaction, maybe they could have made it more clear with better music choice and close up shot so you could see the tears. I too missed it but I was touched when I realized because the cloak of levitation is like a character on its own, a fabric a character that is so cool and it is protective of Dr. Strange throughout the movie, the cloak fights for him when he is about to die. The Cloak is a companion, a friend of Strange. Also we have to understand if you want to be a superhero you are alone that is the recurring theme of any superhero character it is a life of self sacrifice. You know the end shot when he is standing at the Sanctum, he has bid goodbye to Christine and his old life, has taken on new responsibilities of protecting earth he is all alone because he has lost his master, his friend, and his love, but you feel he is not so alone he has his protective cloak/friend around him.

The more you try to explain it the more obvious it is that it's stupid. A great ending wouldn't need defending. Especially not every fifth comment in the comments section. Spoilers. He beat the cloud villain with a looper app. The ending went full Green Lantern. SO close though
@kwaiper8 жыл бұрын
Felix Lara Blanco that would be the reason but i was just thinking can dormammu defeat someone with a infinity stone.
@mediaricher93838 жыл бұрын
I said they went full green lantern because they made the main bad guy a giant fart cloud. Then they had that fart cloud get beaten by a looper app, which is a fact. It was a bad ending, but that's okay. You have the rest of your life to defend it. I get that the plot of the two films is different. I think we all knew that, though. "how difficult is it to understand that a magic time stone created a time loop that affected the demon that has no concept of time..that's REALLY not that complicated" I know what happened, I saw the movie. I just think it's stupid. And so do you. That's why you feel the need to explain it to people that already know what happened and just think it was a shitty ending.
@mediaricher93838 жыл бұрын
I'm so dumb that the people that were trying to argue with me deleted their comments....? Thanks for jumping on and filling in for them, not doing much of a better job though. Keep scrolling David. You'll find the reception for this movie mixed at best. "holy shit you're dumb" WEAK Thanks for playing, NEXT
@equinoxz48228 жыл бұрын
"A great ending wouldn't need defending." Well yes it does, because there's always going to be people who don't understand, either because they didn't pay attention or because they just had a moment of stupidity (there is no movie with an ending that everyone agrees with). And then of course there's always the fanboys who hate the movie because Marvel made it. And it was pretty obviously explained in the movie. If someone in the video questions it for the wrong reasons, of course there's going to be people defending it in the comments. You do realize that these comments are reactions to the video right? You can keep trying to bring it down by oversimplifying it and calling it a "looper app", instead of coming up with a legitimate criticism. But you can make literally everything sound stupid if you want it to. You also come across as an extremely arrogant person. You literally told someone what there opinion was, as if it was a fact. ("I just think it's stupid, and so do you".) You're free to think anything is stupid because you interpreted it in a way it wasn't meant to. However you can't force your wrong interpretation on others. Everyone is free to have their own opinion, and yours is obviously in the minority. You should just accept that you don't like the movie and move on. There's nothing wrong with disliking something most people loved. And one last thing you said was: "You'll find the reception for this movie mixed at best.". Well, last time I checked it was received extremely well, and it was sitting at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it got an A Cinemascore. I don't know how you measure how well a movie is received, but you must be doing something wrong in that department.

***** It feels short run time is due of Disney/Marvel really seeing this as financial risk. It is darker than their previous attempts, it is very fantastical (not always can be converted into money), and have difficult concepts to convey (turning back time while fighting with baddies? time loop? multiple dimensions? dimension without time?). Yeah. As a Doctor Strange fan it bugged be a little since there was no mention of Vishanti. I really wanted to hear about Hoggoth, Oshtur, Agamotto since they're are the ones from whom DS draws his powers but they totally avoided it. And also wanted the movie to give a little exposition about the various artifacts as they're major sources for his various powers in the comics but they didn't explain anything instead except for the Book of Cagliostro. But I'm happy that we at least get to see Wand of Watoomb, The Staff of the Living Tribunal, Eye of Agamotto, Cloak of Levitation and The Book of Cagliostro etc., I hope they give a little exposition in the future movies.

I think that's being saved for Doc Strange 2. This was to test the waters to how the public receives this side of Marvel. It was dipping the toes in the water. Sometimes we lose track of this as readers of the comics but it isn't all about us....heh. Jokes aside, I really do think Doctor Strange 2 will did deep into those aspects of the Strange lore and compound on Dormammu where he's the actual threat now that he understands time exists.
@nagarajanveerannan29678 жыл бұрын
Ryan P I agree. They didn't dwell deep into the DS world. It would be interesting to see where they go from this, now they've established his origin story. I also really hated the look of Dormammu reminded me of Paralax from GL. I hope they go back to his look in the comics.
@ryanp60558 жыл бұрын
I didn't hate it, I actually enjoyed it. I don't want his comic book form because he'd be too similar to Ghost Rider for a lot of the general audiences. I loved that they used Cumberbatch as the motion capture for him. It gave him a great look as almost the antithesis to Strange. As if he could take whatever form is necessary to communicate with his foes. He wasn't a fart cloud. He was a cosmic being. And as far as cosmic beings in movies go, he was pretty damn good.

Exactly! he literally brought time into the dark dimension, but regarding Kristian's complaints about Rachel McAdams reaction, or lack there of, I think at that point in time she is probably aware of the Avengers and all the powered people in the universe, so that fact that Stephan Strange is now "powered" is shocking, but not unheard of, but the writers should have had some dialogue in there where Rachel's character acknowledged she has heard of the Avengers or seen the Battle of New York, something like that but overall I really enjoyed Dr. Strange, hope we get more Dormmammu

Dormammu lives without time (and possibly had no prior concept of it), which was one of the points they reiterated on multiple occasions, so I'd imagine that's why the time loop worked. I agree with Kristian about the end-credits scene though, Mordo went from being too good to break the rules, to relishing breaking the rules far too quickly. I would've preferred they kept that progression for the sequel with Strange being crowned Sorcerer Supreme pushing him over the edge.

The reason Dormammu couldn't break the loop was because he had no concept of time
@Arg0nat8 жыл бұрын
One of the reasons i think the time loop worked at the end with dormammu is because doctor strange basically introduces this beast to the concept of time. While some of the sorcerers that were able to break the loop had practice, dormammu didn't understand what was happening, so he had no power over it (however, thought it wouldve been cool if we learned doctor strange really couldn't perform the time loop forever, which would've added tension as he kept getting killed)

I hate BS complaints. I swear. "People might not understand the magic." At what point in Harry Potter did anyone sit down and explain the science of the magic? When in Lord of the Rings did they have the wizard exposition scene where Gandolf explain how his magic worked? "This might be the first time someone goes to a Marvel movie and they might get confused?" Remember how this crew constantly says that these movies are for the general audience and not the comic geeks because they don't have the numbers to seriously support comic movies? You know whose numbers are smaller? The amount of people who haven't seen a Marvel Studios movie. Half of that number exists because they were just born and aren't at an age where they can understand Thomas the Tank Engine, let alone a bloody Marvel movie. (Kristen would watch Thomas and complain "They didn't explain how the trains could talk.") Harloff's complaints came down to "because I didn't get it, there's going to be this mass of people who won't get it either. They don't read the comics so they will be lost." Yeah, because the people who didn't read Harry Potter watched those movies and went "Hey, they didn't explain the physics of Hogwarts magic enough." And this idiotic complaint of "understanding the villain more." Because I remember those scenes in the original Star Wars Trilogy where they took time to explain Darth Vader's motivation. Maybe that 10 minutes of Darth Vader training is in the extras somewhere. Oh wait, his back story was told via throw-away lines by other characters. Oh wait, they did actually tell his whole back story in three prequels, and that turned out great. Didn't it? Sometimes a villain is just a villain. He does not have to be the biggest focus of the story. it took Marvel 15 year to truly backstory Doctor Doom. Green Goblin's whole motivation in the 1960's was "I want to put on a mask and fight Spider-Man." Joker? Oh yeah, they told his backstory once and. . .okay, that was by the god of comic writers so that did work out. For the most part this endless bitching about the villains is just whining. We do not have to have a bloody psychological examination of every damn comic book villain brought to movie screens. When anyone tries to do that in rarely works out.
@Brook112238 жыл бұрын
The sorcery sequence especially with Tutting was just mind-bending. It felt like hypnosis that choreographed so perfectly. Seeing how they harness energy and shape reality was just tripping. The psychedelic vibe in this film was what made this Marvel film so unique. At the same time it had a Thor vibe to it as well. The ancient one channeling energy from The Dark Dimension was here way of seeking redemption and even though she broke the rule she had her reasons for what she did. The arrogance of Doctor Strange was captured so perfectly that it came out straight out of the comic book pages. The sequence to when Strange is looking out from the Sanctum Sanctorum felt straight out the comic book pages. The fight choreography especially for The Ancient One was just incredible there was cross between Kung Fu and Praying Mantus style of fighting.

Freaking loved it. I am STOKED to see this again, and to see Strange in the rest of the MCU. I give this movie a solid 9 out of 10. Kaecilius didn't work for me as the villian. I thought his character was not developed enough. Also, I agree with the time frame, from when Strange got in his accident to the time when he first fights Kaecilius. That was pretty fuzzy. But overall, it was visually stunning, one of the most breathtaking MCU movies we've seen yet, the acting was fantastic, and the story was brought to life in a refreshing way. I feel like they purposely left things out about Strange and the Ancient One because, why would you reveal all of your secrets in the first movie? We have a lot to look forward to in the next movie, and seeing him in the next Avengers movie. I will be going to see this movie again, and this time in IMAX 3D! I saw it in Dolby Cinema at AMC, but it wasn't in 3D. So, I will definitely be doing that next time around. Loved this movie!!

She lives in a world where aliens have rained destruction from the sky and gods among men have stood up to fight them. That is why I don't think she was freaked out as much as if it happened to us in our reality.

I think Christine didn't totally freak out at Stephen's astral projection because she was focused on the job at hand. She's a doctor and there was a dying man in front of her, so she compartmentalized and focused on saving his life, knowing she needed to keep a cool head in the operating room and that she'd have time to process later.

6.5/10. Strange's character development is off for me. It's fast-paced, spoonfed, and some of the parts aren't well explained. Like, what's with Stephen Strange the the Ancient One chose him to be her student? It seems like, everyone can be like Strange if you just know the name of the Ancient One's place, and if you happen to meet Mordo somewhere. The pacing of the training is poorly edited and explained. It's fast paced, as if Strange became a sorcerer that easily. He lacks struggles and failures with his training. His character is really underdeveloped for me. But other than that, I loved the effects and the choreography. My most favorite part would be when the Ancient One is about to die, and had a conversation with Strange. That for me is really intimate, sincere, and emotional.

A couple of things on Harloff's (apologies if I spelled your last name wrong) position w/ Rachael McAdams reaction to Strange's astro-projection (sure she had a reaction) however I took it as if she has witnessed in person and/or on the news the events of the Avengers and other phenomenons where she has been slightly prepared for what happened in th operation room. Secondly Dormammu's look not only was chosen like what JS mentioned but also what Sultur in Thor Ranarock might be designed as well. - THE PHOENIX

Regarding Campea's comment about the cloak of levitation and the collar pop, I think that was a great nod to comic fans, because as you know, Doctor Strange always has his collar popped! Also, the cloak is wiping his face because Strange has tears in his eyes after parting with Christine Palmer. It's a scene to establish the relationship between Strange and the cloak. It's a very Disney thing to do! You can clearly see subtle tears on Strange's face in IMAX. One of the great things about IMAX is seeing the subtle nuances to facial expression. I even picked up that Mads Mikkelsen had a tear coming down his face when he was chained up talking to Strange in the Sanctum. It was around the time his was telling of his aguish that the Ancient One was withholding secrets from him about eternal life. So in reality, Mads Mikkelsen's character does have some depth. You just have to look for it.

+ZakMan Pro Exactly, it's already in the movie that Dr. Strange is playing with fire by doing the things that he does. Kind of like The Ancient One did. Oddly enough I think the plot of this movie is one of the strongest of the MCU, it's just a few aspects of the execution that drag it down (I wasn't a fan of Dr. Strange surviving in his first fight with Kaecilius for so long, he should have been little more than a mouse in a cage at that point, they either needed to show more of Dr. Strange fighting before hand, or have him show less ability when defending himself).

So watching this movie, it was strange, and I totally didn't get the little things that other true Dr Strange comic fans got. So with me, I thought it was well acted. Great review guys! John Campea, i think i can explain the loop at the end. While Casillias was able to break out of the time reversal, that is different than a time loop. Dormamu was able to also break out of the time warp, but he was caught in an endless loop. This is proven, because he didnt say the same thing every time to dr strangein each loop, otherwise that would have meant he was caught in it. Not sure if this explained it well enough, its hard to put in words. Anyways, thanks for the vid guys!

The chronology bugged me too. In the car before the crash, the voice on the phone was clearly describing Rhodey's injury from Civil War, which implies that Strange's training didn't start years before "present day" in the MCU (something that someone from Collider postulated before). This meant that Strange's training happened within a very short time period. Though this explains the problem Schnepp raised about Kaecilius, it didn't seem believable to me even when they explained that he was devouring the books with his photographic memory.

I love this movie. This definitely deserve a place on the top tier marvel movies. About the Dr. Strange being Sorcerer Supreme thing, I think Tilda was the sorcerer supreme and the sorcerer supreme a the title handed over to successors when the previous one died. The movie also made that it looks like Aggamotto was the first of many sorcerer supreme. So, after then balcony scene and Mordo basically becoming a villain, Its only natural to give Dr. Strange the title as the new Sorcerer Supreme!

Dont know if anyone already said it but about the time loop Strange tricked Dormammu into I think it had to do with what he said before he levitated into the Dark Dimension "A place outside of time" so he also said "I brought a power from my dimension" to Dormammu so I guess he couldnt deal with that power as Kaecillius did to break the cycle cause it was a power he couldnt control or something.

I have 3 points to make. 1) creating a magical Character for the first time in the MCU is always going to isolate someone. If a person has never seen A MCU movie or read a comic, then let's hope they are encouraged to dig deeper. They can't cater to everyone. Just as I am expected to watch Starwars not knowing the huge universe, there's nothing wrong with trying something risky and catering to one side. So let's just be happy Marvel did stick to the script and hope others jump aboard...2) I personally didn't expect the main villain to look a certain way. I have seen drawings of him and I glad I didn't see another flaming, fire breathing, giant on the big screen as most movies have done before. I also don't believe he is cemented to that one vision. He can still evolve over time. I felt he was powerful as we saw when he "fought " Strange. 3) I saw Christine as a being a "Night Nurse." As a night nurse just like Clair in Dare Devil, these characters seem to be more open minded with a desire to help by default. It's almost like a super power. They don't need an explanation of what they see. Just how Clair did when she met Luke Cage. 9 out of 10. Definitely a blue Blu Ray purchase for me. Saw it in IMax 3d. Amazing!

Regarding Kristian's opinion about Mordo being too vicious at the end which came out of the blue, I think they establish that right at the start. Mordo talks about coming to the Ancient One so he can get vengeance upon his enemies. He mentions that the Ancient one taught him another way. That's why he feels so betrayed at the end, because in his eyes the Ancient One is a hypocrite. His conclusion is to go back to his old ways.

For Kristian: Doctor Strange told Wong's character that he has a photographic memory and that's why he was able to read all the books in that library. And it's also the main reason why Strange wants to read the advance books where he learned how to manipulate the Eye Of Agammotto, that's why he wasn't shown to be an incompetent rookie like Antman.
