My head cannon for the last point as to why the classic doctors are more violent and use guns more is that the modern doctors are scarred by the time war and stay away from violence when possible whereas the classic doctors haven’t dealt with that yet
@lordolxinator

This makes sense, especially if you consider how the Ninth Doctor acts. He's extremely aggressive at times *ESPECIALLY* regarding Daleks because he's fresh out of the Time War where he believes they forced him to genocide (at least) two races, learning that the Daleks survived. Because of course they did. But when push comes to shove in The Parting of Ways, The Doctor stays true to his post-war promise of pacifism refusing to kill the Daleks even if doing so would save half of humanity and the rest of the universe. He only tends to waiver after that point when his loved ones are in danger (or harmed), or when the despotic Time Lords (who are potentially worse than the Daleks) return.

@@lordolxinator The Ninth Doctor at the beginning of Series 1 would have gladly blown the Daleks up sky high regardless of the sarcifices, he'd already done it once before, it's just over the course of Series 1, Rose (before the love plotline) was there to guide him and help him through his pain and brought him back onto his normal moral track for the modern era.

"The man who never would" quote is more consistent with the purity of revenge than it is with violence itself. He's surrounded by violence often and is tormented when he's had to participate, but he never would exact revenge on someone who has submitted. If you surrender to The Doctor he will actually protect your life in the hopes of transforming it into something better. I hope that clears things up a bit.

"The Man Who Never Would" refers to the Doctor not killing out of cold blood, cruelty, anger, revenge or malice.....like the Holo 7th Doctor told Ace in Power of the Doctor, "It's never OK to blow things up.".....the Doctor is so old (by my guess 14 would be well in the 3000s) and has traveled the universe so much (going to alter universes like E-space, Pete's World, and the House Bubble) that the Doctor realizes that ignorance and stupidity are just as common as the stars....that is why the Doctor always gives people a chance to turn things around before the coup de grace is release

You forgot he wasn’t always interested in his companions, romantically. “Have you met Sarah Jane? She’s my best friend.” is the closest Classic Who got to romance since Hartnell “accidentally” got married to a Mayan. Even Tom and Lalla played it cool on screen. Only when McGann’s Eighth Doctor takes a shine to his new lady friend, which is more of an American idea push, does he really show any inkling of romance. I found out years later, many asexual fans saw him as their ideal, and were angered by this, and later Companions. Then there’s Rose and the Pond family. (And arguably Jack.) We all know how that turned out. At least Martha had the sense to realize he was just an infatuation and moved on from those ideas. Yaz, I must have missed the obvious until it was shoved in our faces. If anything, I’d love to see Yaz meet a male Doctor, and realize she could not love him like she did 13.

it is a little amusing, but i reckon the Time-Lords had "regeneration" rooms built that would instantly repair post-regeneration. Probably due to a self-isolated temporal reverse mechanic. Akso, I don't think everyone could regenerate as not all Gallifreyan were Time-Lords. the Doctor never explains his regeneration as a "Gallifreyan trick" tio cheat death, after all. He always connected it to the Time Lords... unless I'm missing something. Been a while since I watched the show, and I'm currently on the 9th Doctor during my rewatch. I can't stand the effects of the Classic series, or the echo-y audio, or the relatively exaggerated and sometimes cheesy acting which was considered normal during those days.

You can see that within the show, like Hell Bent very clearly shown the regeneration of the War General inside a building. Actually the show itself referred to him as Doctor Who in the credits up until 2006, the Doctor has been referred to as Doctor Who in the show many times, most if not all the actors refer to the character they played as Doctor Who as a way of avoiding confusion with other people, and most other people involved in production of the show refer to the character as The Doctor and Doctor Who interchangeably. So yes, the character's name isn't _technically_ Dr. Who, but to avoid confusion, it basically is, and pulling people up on it can end up making YOU seem like the idiot because most fans acknowledge this.

I don't think the 13th Doctor was ejected from the Tardis. She seemed to have just fallen out. If your justification is that the Tardis made her fall out intentionally, I have my doubts. The 10th Doctor's regeneration into the 11th Doctor showed him stumbling around. Along with the screen movements, it's heavily implied that the Tardis is falling in all kinds of directions. Also, I think the show writers intentionally had the Doctor regenerate in the Tardis. In my mind, the Tardis being destroyed is mirroring the Doctor's death and revival. It also served as a convenient way to redesign the Tardis for the next Doctor.

Yea, 13th fell out of the TARDIS and the poor girl dematerialized shortly after. 12th's regeneration broke most of the console room to the point, where some stuff ceased to work properly, 13th after looking at her image pushed some button, which resulted in a shortcut and that shock threw her out. She wasn't desperately ejected by the TARDIS. Although, after her dematerialization, the TARDIS was stuck in a loop on another planet, I think that's why people could think, that she threw 13th out deliberately.

The Seventh Doctor seems perfectly okay post-regeneration - until the Rani gives him an injection to leave him amnesiac. His subsequent confusion is a result of this until his encounter with the real Mel (as opposed to the Rani in disguise) and after that he seems *mostly* okay. Actually the Sixth Doctor did not send those two mortician into the acid bath. One fell in accidently when his partner pushed into him, and then the one who fell in clearly tries to grab onto his partner to get out but pulls him in instead. Another misconception of the Sixth Doctor! Also I would argue that the Doctor never Intended to strangle Peri, that was clearly Spectrox Toximia that took over his mind. Regarding the last point, taken in context, he never would. “He” being Ten, at that point in his regeneration. The numbering of the Doctors is something that is really only used by writers, and fans. It is rarely mentioned in the show. The one exception that comes to mind is in “The Five Doctors”, where Richard Hurndall, playing the first Doctor, asks Peter Davison, “Regeneration?”. Davison replies “Fourth”, to which Hurndall replies, “So there are five of me now”. The numbering is messed up now, anyway, even if you disregard the War Doctor (who was named as such, just to keep the numbering intact). People forget that Tennant played Ten, but was mortally wounded, and regenerated into… himself, so he was technically Eleven as well. Smith should have been Twelve, Capaldi Thirteen, etc. This is even addressed by Smith, who explains to Clara that he is the twelfth regeneration, due to Tennant, and “Captain Grumpy”. Still, if someone says Ten, Eleven, or Twelve, we know they are referring to Tennant, Smith, and Capaldi, respectively. I actually loved that once scene, where Missy is regaling a story about how the Doctor was in an impossible situation, yet survived. He is initially, fleetingly, dressed as the fourth Doctor, but you cannot see his face, but as she goes on, he morphs into Capaldi, because, in Missy’s eyes, they are all the same person.
@Croftice1

Yea, Tennant regenerated into himself, but he kept the face, personality and stuff, his regeneration is essentially just healing, he even explained it as that "I've used the energy to heal myself, but didn't want to change, why would I? So I've sent the rest of the energy to the nearest compatible recipient." talking about the hand. So the Doctor healed, but didn't change, meaning it's not a whole regeneration. Yes, the whole energy was spent, but after healing the rest of that spent energy was sent to the hand. So while it counts as a regeneration energy spent, it doesn't count as a whole regeneration underwent. He is still the same 10th Doctor. Why would he have to be count as 11th? He didn't change into another man, he just healed his wounds and used a trick to avoid the change. It is yet another regeneration, but it is still the same Doctor and there is a clear difference between those two. Regeneration and Doctor are often interchangeable, when each of the Doctor speaks about his/her former "regeneration" (meaning personality and whatnot), but when people outside the show refer to these terms, regeneration means the process, while Doctor number 1 to 13 means each personality. So while a regeneration event occured, a personality didn't change. That means 10th Doctor's first regeneration (the Meta Crisis event) is a regeneration, but isn't a different Doctor, so no need for the next number in the row. 10th Doctor is still 10th Doctor, not 11th. Matt Smith is proper 11th and always will be.

The events of dalek and parting of the ways solidify this for me where, even though he knows humanity will survive in some shape or form, he still can't activate the delta wave. Also in dalek it's the first time he's seen one since their supposed extinction and knows just how dangerous one is. Also, long shot, but ptsd could be a factor too.

I get a headache now regarding the whole Doctor numbering thing. Feel sorry for any newcomer checking out Doctor Who for the first time. NEWCOMER: Ah, so Ncuti Gatwa's the 14th Doctor. WHOVIAN #1: No, he's the 15th. Tennant's the 14th. NEWCOMER: Oh, but according to the list of lead actors, Gatwa's the 14th. Tennant was the 10th Doctor, wasn't he? I thought Gatwa's the new guy taking over from Whittaker. WHOVIAN #1: Yeah, but Whittaker regenerated back into Tennant first for the 60th anniversary specials. Tennant's now the 10th and 14th Doctors, which will make Gatwa the 15th. NEWCOMER: Oh, okay then. I'll remember that. WHOVIAN #2: NO! Eccleston's the 10th cuz of John Hurt as the War Doctor! WHOVIAN #1: Yeah, but Hurt disowned the title of the Doctor. WHOVIAN #2: He still counts as a regeneration! NEWCOMER: Ah, so Tennant's technically the 11th and 15th Doctors then? WHOVIAN #3: Wrong! Tennant's actually 11th, 12th and 16th. Cuz despite not changing into a new body in "Journey's End", it still counts as a regeneration. Thereby making Smith 13th and why he was the last of the old regeneration cycle. NEWCOMER: Blimey, I'm really gonna need to keep up with all this. WHOVIAN #4: OMG! You guys are totally forgetting the Timeless Children and the Fugitive Doctor before Hartnell! NEWCOMER: Uh-oh. (Reckon I'm gonna need some paracetamols handy.) WHOVIAN #1, #2 and #3: WE DON'T CONSIDER THAT CANON!!! RTD SHOULD CLEAR UP THE MESS CHIBNALL LEFT!!! WHOVIAN #4: Well I do consider it canon! WHOVIAN #1, #2 and #3: GET OUT!!! YOU'RE NOT A TRUE WHOVIAN!!! WHOVIAN #4: Oh boo hoo! You guys also forgot the incarnations seen in "The Brain of Morbius" too! NEWCOMER: Oh Christ. Sooooooo, just how many Doctors are there then? And where should I start watching the show from? Or shall I just not bother watching the show at all if I've got all these debates and feuds to look forward to?

actually he would be the 4th ... as he was the war doctor ... and he didnt call himself the doctor because he didnt do the doctor ... he did war ... only in the special did he regain his way and become the doctor ... this would make tom baker number 5 and so on ... BUT as he was recorded as the war doctor ... and he refused the title of doctor ... he is one without being counted as one ... making tom baker the 4th ... and so on ... also people forget the curator ... is also the doctor ... making the 14th doctor actually the 15th ... and the newest one 16th ... as the curator ... is a revisit of an old face ... in his retirement ... and as we see him at the end of a special with the war doctor and the one who forgets and the one who hates ... making setting all the doctors from 9 onwards out place in time and space ... . which this who culture site NEVER has caught on to ... and they have missed the new seasons of plot lines because they have missed all the returns and cross overs and previous stories ... . also the timeless child and those who became immortal because of them are not doctors ... the doctor is and only is the doctor when he corrects the imbalance of evil and good ... as the first doctor gets told perhaps its just some bloke who goes around making things right ... making them and ONLY them the doctor ... the rest are just time lords ... who stole their immortality from a child because they could ...

Thank you very much all for your reply’s. Your response is valid and appreciated. And yes, looking at my old notes, (plus updates) he was indeed number 9. (Whoops and thank you for the correction.) Here’s how I arrived at my number: (Doctor’s on “Doctor Who” television show.) 1st Doctor William Hartnell (also Richard Hurndall, and David Bradley). 2nd Doctor: Patrick Troughton. 3rd Doctor: Jon Pertwee. (Technically my 3rd Doctor, and my favorite.) 4th Doctor: Tom Baker. 5th Doctor: Peter Davison. 6th Doctor: Colin Baker. 7th Doctor: Sylvester McCoy. 8th Doctor: Paul McGann. (Regenerated into…) John Hurt. (Regenerated into…) Christopher Eccleston. (Regenerated into…) David Tennant. (Regenerated into…) Matt Smith. (Regenerated into…) Peter Capaldi. (Regenerated into…) Jodie Whittaker. (Regenerated into…) David Tennant (?) (Regenerated into…) Ncuti Gatwa. Honorable (and not so honorable, or confirmed) mention: Movie Doctor: Peter Cushing. Valeyard: Michael Jayston Dream Doctor: Toby Jones. Timeless Child: (Various). Young Doctor: (In “Listen” S8•E4)(Rummored to have been Ty Tennant) Fugative Doctor: Jo Martin “Final Doctor”, aka Doctor 45, aka Doctor Moon: Colin Salmon. (Quote Steven Moffat: “In my head (and ONLY in my head, thihs probably never appear on screen, or be confirmed in any way) River’s not just [the Doctor’s] wife - she’s his widow. Somewhere in the terrible future, on a battlefield, the 45th Doctor dies in her arms and makes her the same promise she once made him - it’s not over for you, you’ll see me again. So River buries her husband and off she goes to have lots of adventures with his younger selves and confuse the hell out of them. Until, of course, she ends up in the data core of the Library Planet, and realizes she’ll never see him again. And then she starts to wonder why anyone would call a moon ‘Doctor.’ Ahhh…”) Respect to the many Parodies of the Doctor, and Big Finish Radio Doctors, too numerous to mention. Did I miss any? 🙂

I would say you are wrong with Jodie being the first "Modern" Doctor to regenerate outside the TARDIS. technically 8 is a Modern Doctor and he renegerates on Kaarn, Heck, the 95% of The 11th Doctor's Regeneration was done outside, he just needed to do one last push for the change to take effect inside the TARDIS. Effectively, a lot of people consider the 11th Doctor's Regeneration to be an Outside Regeneration.

I can't speak for everyone, but I think newer/younger viewers would at least try to catch up with what came earlier, if they cared enough about the show. I mean, I started with New Who, and took so much of a break from it, that I practically started it again this decade (with an era I mostly missed last time) and I haven't seen a single Classic Who episode/part in full - yet, I still want to see as many of them as I can. I think people in general would be at least open to checking out the older version of what they like now. Also, from what little I've seen of the Second Doctor's post-regeneration, there was a slight moment where he's overwhelmed by sound or something. Maybe it just affects each regeneration differently, which would make sense given the show would just be repeating itself all the time? It's like how the Eleventh Doctor was affected, but not with angst or anything, but there were hints that his regeneration wasn't complete (there's at least one seen where he shouts at the end of a sentence), even if the main affect it seemed to have on him was food related.

Concerning his name according to a 1980 Marvel Comics 1st edition devoted to the time traveler’s exploits. “What we do know about the Doctor is as follows: He is a Time Lord (real name d3 Σ x2), a member of the ruling class of the planet Gallifrey, who ran off in a stolen, slightly out-of-whack TARDIS because he was bored stiff on his peaceful, civilized, and highly advanced home planet.”

Numbering is confusing. References to Capaldi and Whitaker as 12 and 13 are erroneous because in "Time of the Doctor" Smith gets granted additional regenerations on the basis he was the final (13th) version, which tracks with the idea Tennant kept a face for two stints, and Captain Grumpypants counted (aside: Hurt was awesome), as stated in onscreen canon. Capaldi may have been the 12th actor in the lead role (sorry Sir John, your tenure was guest actor only), but he wasn't truly the 12th Doctor in canon. Even ignoring the previous incarnations from "Timeless Child" (and "Brain of Morbius") the next after Whitaker would be 16th. If we're going for counting actors in the lead role, I'll agree with Whitaker being 13th, but as Tennant has prior experience, Gatwa is 14th regardless of RTD's comments... Unless we include Cushing from the films, but even then Tennant's not 14, but Gatwa might be 15. 🤯 I'm going to revert to my opening statement, numbering is confusing. If WhoCulture staff would like a version of this mad rambling in video form I'd be happy to appear as a guest presenter, gratis.

Comment 1) Jelly Babies are nasty. My mum and I had acquired some before Day of the Doctor came out in theatres, and we gave them a try when we went to see it. We instantly regretted doing so. I reckon that Jelly Babies just are the type of candy which aren't for everyone. Comment 2) As divisive and lore breaking as The Timeless Child arc was, I actually really enjoyed it. Why? It allowed me, a fanfic writer, to safely create a custom variant of the Doctor maybe thousands to millions of years after the current one. My first custom Doctor is called the 500th Doctor, my second one is 501st, and my third one will of course be 502nd. Not only this, but the Timeless Child arc makes it possible for showrunners to no longer have to come up with story reasons to keep the show going via a new set of regenerations like what had to be done with Time of the Doctor. So, it was a really smart and risky move on Chibnall's part. Unfortunately, due to it breaking lore much much more than any other changes to DW lore have done... the majority can only despise it. Comment 3) The Doctor isn't a pacifist. If anything, he should be labled as an "amatuer-Pacifist". At least, in NuWho. In Classic Who... probably not as he hadn't been subjected to the traumatic events of the Time War.

I feel like you're judging The Doctor as an unchanging individual. As someone set in stone. But just as the mannerisms change from actor to actor, so can The Doctor's point of view. The Valeyard shows this, if you believe he was an alternate version of The Doctor. But that's not the only issue I have. There are reasons for the more... explosive... regenerations. At least at first. The Tenth Doctor didn't want to go, so he was holding back the regeneration in order to get his "reward". His regeneration had started shortly after his radiation poisoning. The 11th's weaponized regeneration, resulting in a reset before a very sudden appearance change(don't @ me. That's what they did and you know it) could be written as such because The Doctor was very much close to dying already. He showed signs of dementia, possibly leading to both his hallucinations before changing and his inability to pilot the TARDIS afterwards. Yeah. A lot of hoops to jump through if people don't hold your hand and explain everything. I didn't see the 12th become the 13th or the circumstances involved, so I can't comment on that one. Still, The Doctor did regenerate multiple times until the 10th's second without blowing anything up.

I'll give you 4 and 3, and half of 2 because that whole arc was a cluster fuck. But no one ever thought he was ALWAYS a pacifist. This is the guy who commited genocide on a load of babies because they were born in an inconvenient location. He's not a pacifist. He just sees violence as the final and most extreme measure he could possible take. Hell, he ORDERED a Dalek to commit suicide. It called him a good Dalek... Then obeyed the order. What gives you the impression that someone who would and could do that is a pacifist?

The regeneration sequences, during the Jon Pertwee story The Planet Of Spiders, the Doctor took in so much radiation from the queen's feedback circuit and getting lost in time, the abbot timelord gave his body a push back into a regeneration and he stated that the Doctor would be a little neurotic to say the very least. I'm sure each timelord will have a bit of disorientation when their body regenerates, I would also think based on the circumstances of why they are regenerating would leave it to chance how long they were to be in flux. Now, when David Tennant's Doctor regenerated into himself, in the Stolen Earth story, he transferred the remaining amount on regenerative energy into his hand that Captain Jack Harkness provided and he didn't have amnesia or flux. When Colin Baker regenerated into Sylvester McCoy, he was only temporarily in flux when the Rani knocked him unconscious and hit him up with a drug to give him a healthy dose of amnesia so she could manipulate him into helping in her scheme.

The explanation that the Sonic Screwdriver 'doesn't work on wood' always really annoys me, because people take it very literally. The Sonic Screwdriver resonates mechanical devices and communicates with computers. So it can open a lock, but it can't open a bolt, because there is no mechanism to manipulate; a bolt is operated manually from the other side of the door. Hence the screwdriver is ineffective. Ultimately the screwdriver is just a shorthand device to keep the plot moving in basically any situation but still!

Far as numbering of the Doctors goes, almost all are wrong as Tennant is actually the 11th, 12th and 16th Doctor. War Doctor and Tennant regenerating into himself during his first run counts as a full regeneration towards the "limit of 13 lives" as even Smith's Doctor thinks he's going to finally die until he's granted another cycle from the Time Lords at the end of his run.

There is a reason why the Doctor is a pacifist and it’s not because he’s a peaceful being but more reserved with violence when needed. Why the Doctor is reserved with violence is because he/she knows that the Doctor can be come incredibly violent that horrifies the mind because the Doctor’s vast intellect is a very dangerous mind and weapon far beyond any weapons we can make. Like Batman, the Doctor know if it’s that one push he/she will go over the edge and will not hesitate to look back. That is WHY I think the Doctor is mostly a pacifist

I'm sure the idea that the only important thing about the Doctor being "who she is now" is also excellent, since their past incarnations have nothing to do with the Doctor's character, point of view, or actions. After all, why remember the past, let alone learn from it? Don't agree? You're a "non-fan."
