Back when bubble wrap was new it used to appear as sci-fi fabric. (See the straps on snowspeeder cockpits. In Empire Strikes Back). There was an infamous episode of Doctor Who called The Ark In Space (great story btw big influence on Alien apparently) where large elements of a monster were bubble wrap painted green. Remember it was new and rare back then but now it is very noticeable. So Doctor Who and bubble wrap have a history.

I really want to see a scene where the 13th Doctor is in the recent past, doing whatever in a museum or vault associated with U.N.I.T. and the Black Archives, and comes across an empty display case. She stares at it for a second, then suddenly gets an idea and starts rummaging around in her coat pockets as the scene cuts away, then a few minutes later she's walking away from a display with a fez in it. No focus, no explanation, just a subtle confirmation that the 11th Doctor got his fez.

'Kerblam' was definitely one of the better Series 11 outings. You can tell that Pete McTighe just gets how Doctor Who works. The references were cool, especially the fez which was nice but also advanced the plot. The guest cast were all solid in their roles and the design on the story overall from the robots to the various parts of the warehouse itself was visually stunning. A return to traditional Who with a slight dig at companies like Amazon and complete with a bubble wrap menace.

kwanarchive I think the hate stems from it not having a full blown alien in the episode as what people had thought advertised. The episode is also co-written with Chibnall so we didn’t get to see McTighe flex his writing more. I still have a strong belief he’s going to be the next showrunner after Chibnall completes his five year plan.

It’s a decent episode .. definitely feels like it would fit in well in the RTD era honestly . I like the concept and the mystery is intriguing .. the supporting characters are fine if not all that fleshed out . I do wish they had a line at the end that while Charlie’s methods were evil , he had a point and that Kerblam’s A.I isn’t that great either since it killed Kira to retaliate against Charlie . I think you can make that assumption but a line or two would have helped clarify them making a mostly human workforce now

I think what makes this episode stand out from most of DW eps in recent years is the discussion like you guys have at the end. Doctor Who used to make us think about a lot of things in everyday life from “outside” perspective (imaginative sci-fi what-ifs). RTD era touched on emotional retrospective way-of-life side. Early Moff on popular sci-fi/philosophy side (ontology, metaphysics, nature of time). It moved to contemporary political ideas in series 8 (and is staying there) but it mostly lacked clarity or depth. This ep is however a good exception imo.

Worked at an Amazon warehouse for one day. Couldn't take the lifeless zombie-like feeling I got from the workers there. Only people that weren't dead were managers and HR. And I could tell that, behind the flowery language and nice-sounding benefits was a company that didn't care about you and just wanted to get you in the building working. (There was also no interview, just a basic organizational test and a drug test, and then they pushed me/us through orientation quick as could be). Anyway, this was an interesting episode because of that background. I think the commentary in it on the work culture was definitely a side-note to the automation aspect, but still.

I wouldn't say this is the BEST episode of the Season, but it is the one that feels the most similar to a proper Nu-Who episode. I could very easily see this playing out with any of the previous four Doctors, something about the narrative and the dialogue definitely felt a bit more like it was trying to fit in to the old groove, rather than the distinct new style of the Chibnall era. I will say though, I think the messaging here was pretty confused. Like, the machines are putting everyone out of work and large swathes of the population are living in poverty. But on the other hand Charlies is clearly a villain and his plan to kill a bunch of people to increase human employment levels is evil, and the system tries to stop him... But at the end the factory owners decide to hire more people? Even after the system just proved itself to be way more reliable? But then again the system made the decision to kill Kira even though it really didn't need to, so the system is kinda fucked up in general... Fuck, the whole thing is just so tangled, I really have no idea what the theme is actually supposed to be lol.
@ms_scribbles
@ms_scribbles 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call that confused messaging. I'd call that complex. A system that's making people miserable, and while most are just trying to get through life as best as they can, some of them turn to terrorism. Sure, the system is fucked, but murder isn't the solution. And yeah, sometimes people realize that while their system is efficient, it's creating an unbearable hardship and needs to be changed for the good of everyone. I mean, I suppose compared to Moffat's two-dimensional themes of "this bad, therefore this good", it might seem a bit confusing, but if you think back on it, it's just the way real people work. It's not made up of either mustache-twirling villains or saintly heroes. It's made up of people who are all complicated and often conflicted.

You were talking this episode about if we would make advancements if we didn't have to work. If you look at history, you are right that many of the great periods of scientific advancement have come from war, but there have also been periods of advancement that came from societies that didn't need labour. In the latter case it is usually not only scientific advancement but also cultural and academic (e.g. mathematics, psychology, philosophy). For good examples of this we can look at ancient greece, rome, the byzantine empire and the renaissance.

This is a fun episode but the message it ends kinda sucks? Like "corporations aren't evil, they just need a bit of a wake up call!". I mean, I agree with the vilain until he decides that the solution is "lets kill everybody". It feels kinda forced just to make him the bad guy, instead of someone who actually has a point. And after this incident things get better, so the way to a better world is to have a bunch of unsuccessful terrorist attacks somehow?
@ms_scribbles
@ms_scribbles 4 жыл бұрын
That's...almost exactly the opposite of what this episode is saying. I'm not sure where you got that the episode was telling people to attempt terrorism.
@VidoIin
@VidoIin 4 жыл бұрын
@@ms_scribbles The situation wasn't good before the terrorist attack, workers were still abused and made up an insignificant part of the work force, after the attempted terrorist attack, they decide to reorganize the workforce to be less reliant on robots and more on humans. Those changes were made in response to the attack, before that the position of the managers was "Yes it sucks, but what can I do?". The episode never tells people to attempt terrorism, but the story only reaches the "happy ending" thanks to the failed terrorist attack. That's why I said that the message is kinda bad, it doesn't portray voting or striking or any other kinda manifestation as the thing that leads to change, instead the catalyst for the improved conditions is the unsuccessful terrorist attack.

It's actually better for someone to just be good at a particular kind of job and then become the best version of that and maybe moving up some but not much due to the fact that most people are promoted until they're no longer competent at their job... Either to the point where they get fired or to the point where they're good enough to not fire but not good enough to actually be good at their job. So what's best is whenever you hire someone from either a different department or a different company all together and then have that person go through the different jobs so that they can have a full understanding of the company as a whole and then go to that position and yes it might be a much shorter time span like maybe 2 weeks at each position however it's enough to give them a brief understanding.

Secondly feel free to look at the CEO / owners pay and see how much they get on an annual basis and then drop that down to a reasonably large income yes more than the average person however not hundreds or thousands of times the average worker... And you'll find that oh yeah there's plenty of f****** money to pay them a living wage not just better than the average across the country because in 2019 if the minimum wage had kept up with inflation it would have been $20 an hour back then... Having the doctor stating that the systems are not the problem, just the bad eggs in the system that are the problem is the least doctor thing I have ever seen.

Some of these ideas are considered _idealistic._ But, that's really what you have to shoot for. You don't stop a good idea because of _the worst case scenario._ You put systems in place to address those as they come. Imagine freeing up time for parents to be with their children. Perhaps fewer children would be raised by the internet / TV / Public Schools. And they would grow with more real world knowledge as they have more time with their parents.

SPOILERS I wish that Master is wrong about The Doctor being a timeless child. It better be Rassilon, or the master himself, or anyone else. That will just ruin doctor who for me. Also i hope Rassilon comes back and fucks up these cyber time lords Also they better hire someone good for Rassilon, the last one was just an old geezer, he didnt have a sense of a supreme time lord to him.

Tax the companies that use robots and use those taxes along with closing the other loopholes for the billionaires and billionaire companies to pay for universal basic income and that way you can get a small job on the side by taking a portion of your universal basic income and say making crafts to sell online or making paintings to sell online or taking your cell phone and making all kinds of beautiful photos and selling those online... Eventually you have enough money to start a small business and then have robots working for you that are taxed so other people can have universal basic income...

Yeah that dude exaggerated like a motherfuker. I have friends who work in Amazon warehouses and yes they are dangerous conditions and yes people might die in these conditions however they are paid much better than that. Feel free to look up any Amazon job anywhere in the country and you cannot find any of them that are less than $18 an hour... And those are the ones that are in states where they have not increased the minimum wage at $7.25 an hour for the federal minimum wage still. Don't get me wrong I'm not defending Amazon however I am pointing out that Walmart is much worse and pays mostly in government taxes which means that everyone pays for their employees and not just the people that shop there.

Look into elderly people who retire the ones who stay retired and up dying earlier than the ones to say find some sort of hobby or a part-time job are a volunteer position humans are designed to work not be lazy and do meth that comes from having nothing else to do they put rats and cages with nothing to do and drugs and I did the drugs however they put other rats in cages with drugs and something to do food and maybe a companion or two and they might have tried the drugs here and there but it wasn't really an addiction they didn't do all of the drugs they just tested them out and then we're like okay enough of that time for the hamster wheel.

Just saying Pearl harbor and 9/11 were the only two attacks on us soil during either of those wars and those were the attacks that got us into the wars.... If they were real attacks then we would have had a tax after those on us soil however nope not a single one. Years went by and we were in both of those wars and still no attacks if I were an enemy of a country and I had massive military power I would you know do multiple coordinated attacks for my first attack similar to 9/11 however maybe a little bit more intense such as hitting Disneyland or the super bowl you know something that would actually kill a large percentage of people in comparison to the twin towers that yet killed a couple thousand people however if they hit the super bowl they would have easily have killed 20,000 people in one hit...
