My 3 Theories: She's a version of The Valeyard, before the full fall to villainy. She's an alternative universe version of the Doctor, created if the 4th Doctor DID commit genocide in Genesis of the Daleks. She's the 14th Doctor, having lost her memories of her past.

@@cosmiclasagna2570 She could have either taken it from a future version (The second Doctor's Tardis was confiscated when he was exiled on earth). It doesn't make sense for her to have the police box Tardis, since we know that Hartnell and Susan originally stole that Tardis and probably chose the police box exterior to assimilate in the 60's. Ruth's Tardis has the classic design..but she also calls it ship like Hartnell did..as the 12th Doctor had pointed out. It makes sense for Ruth to be an earlier version of the Doctor. If she is not from an alternate universe, it would only make sense for her to be pre-Hartnell.

My theory: she is the Other, a character who was said to have helped Rassilon and Omega create the Time Lord society, and of whom the Doctor is implied to be sort of a reincarnation (not a regeneration). While the Other originates from some obscure 90s spin-off novels, those novels are based on a story arc which had been planned for the show had it continued into the 90s, and was hinted at in the final 2 seasons.

anyone notice that when the two "doctors" were in the other tardis together it didn't glitch? when 10 and 11 were in a tardis together the tardis couldn't figure out which look to use so it was glitching back and forth. This tardis just stayed the old look, which means they are not the same doctor. So, is she from another dimension? maybe even Susan or Jenny? or Valeyard? which Valeyard would make sense because she was so willing to use guns and kill but i really don't know and I'm so confused

I'd be absolutely fine if Chibnall canonized the looms, made the Doctor the Other, and she encountered a pre-Hartnell incarnation. But that doesn't work for a pre-Hartnell Doctor. The Doctor only became the Doctor when he was Hartnell.

I HAVE NO WORDS! I'm still a bit a taken aback by what I had just experienced! I mean, it's one thing having the Judoon come back, but to have a new unknown version of the Doctor (which A) could be a past version that has existed long before William Hartnell and is possibly an adult Timeless Child before she became reincarnated as the Doctor we know, or B) is perhaps an alternate version of her from a parallel Gallifrey), more possible Gallifreyan history, Captain Jack himself coming back (which was friggin' awesome btw!), and the foreshadowed return of the Cybermen. I don't know if all of these concepts are connected or are two completely different story arcs entirely but it does have me very intrigued in what's in store for the future, although I'm still torn about whether or not this was a truly great standalone story or just a glorified setup episode for future episodes to answer much like with 2011's 'A Good Man Goes to War'. So far, I think this is easily the best Doctor Who story since Capaldi's swansong, but that view could change depending on how well Chibnall can stick the landing. After all, we don't need another Wedding of River Song or Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos!

I really like all of the shock twists/reveals in this episode, but I also feel they could maybe have spread them out a bit more. The reactions I've seen are either 'hate it' or 'love it': there doesn't seem to be any middle-ground. Last season got a lot of flak for having no story arc or real lore development, and I just hope they're not going overboard trying to make up for that. A regular episode with the Judoon featuring Captain Jack would have been terrific... minus the absolute crap-storm they've brought on themselves with this other future/past/alternate Doctor. I'm happy enough - for now - to see how things play out, but these next few episodes are beyond critical. I know many (so-called) 'fans' wrote the show off the moment she was cast (more fool them), but thankfully many others gave it a fair shot. I honestly do believe that the rest of this season will likely determine whether Jodie's Doctor, and even the series itself, has any kind of future...

You've summarized my feelings exactly. I'm really loving this season. Also, since they have successfully been able to avoid any spoilers...every revelation is a surprise, which I love. Sacha Dhawan's Master, Jack Harkness returning, another Doctor..these guys have really gone the extra mile to keep secrets. Ps. The wedding of River song was a bit underwhelming, given the build-up. However, I do stand by the fact that season 6 had a really amazing arc, ending included.

After the episode aired Chibnall said that Ruth-Doctor is actually the Doctor. Not an alt universe version, not a fake, not a clone or copy, but truly properly one of the Doctors incarnations. Hence the "Introducing Jo Martin as The Doctor" in the end credits. The most popular and convincing theory is that she is the series 6B Doctor. We didn't see the regeneration of 2 into 3. We saw Troughton caught, then we saw Pertwee leaving the Tardis. The theory is that before they force regenerated him they sent him off as an agent for the CIA. Which explains why he and Jamie looked so old in The Two Doctors. Troughton regenerated into Ruth-Doctor which is where we come in. Eventually she regenerates into Pertwee. If the time Lords wiped her memory of her time working for them it wouldn't upset continuity plus it would mean the double Tennant regeneration only counts as one regeneration.

The Doctor work for the CIA between his 2rd and 3rd regeneration, we know that the TimeLords had the ability to gift regenerations and the Looms. So the CIA could have wiped those memories and replaced the used lives to cover their tracks. Ruth’s Tardis is how it looked in then War Games and Spearhead from Space, so that would fit the theory. My first thought was perhaps The doctor has had a whole 12 regeneration cycle before we ever met William Hartnell's 1st doctor. Afterward The Doctor was reborn through LOOM technology into William Hartnell and thats why he/she has no memory of Ruth's Doctor. But that all falls a part when Ruth has a Tardis disguised as a Police call box. Her simply having a Police call box means she has to come after Harnell right? unless she's a doctor from a parallel universe. Starts having a nosebleed

As I recall, we missed one of the early regenerations 2 to 3, I think - and alternate material implied that the Doctor worked for Time Lord Black Ops in this time. It's totally reasonable that they blanked his/ her memory afterwards, and compensated by giving him another regeneration. It doesn't have to be that, I'm just arguing that Time Lords can and have done some freaky things (the Master and Rassilon being solid examples) Plus, do you remember Missy stating "I know him ever since he was a little girl?"

Yeah, like Dolton Fell says, it would mess up the regeneration numbers, it was quite confusing when they added War Doctor but it does at least work logically when you think about it but if they add another one in-between it wouldn't. Maybe she's an alternate dimension Doctor (linking back to the stuff in Spyfall), or possibly a future Doctor but something happens to 13 (or later) where they have their memories wiped, or its that whole jazz about a cycle before Hartnell - but the latter doesn't explain why the Tardis is a police box.....? I'm hoping the rumours were a massive mis-direction and Chibnall will surprise us with something we haven't thought of. I'm pretty sure Missy was just messing about 😁

She's from the series of regenerations that the valleyard from. Classic Who TARDIS, that looks fresh and brand new, meaning it's off of the assembly line. The other time lord obviously being from before Gallifreyan destroyed and recognizing Ruth implies all of this. The Cartnell Masterplan is engaged. Prepare for timey to get a lot more wibblly, a lot more wobbly and a lot more whimey. The biggest time paradox of the doctor's life, as well as the reason why multiple doctors and masters can exist within the same point in time as other versions simultaneously has been opened. It also revives the question that haunts the doctor through every incarnation. Doctor Who?

If this 'Ruth' Doctor is actually the Doctor and is in this timeline (as opposed to an alternative universe version) then there is one place she could be fitted without disturbing the established canon. That point would be between the Second and Third Doctors. As we did not see the regeneration on screen the extended universe has already long ago written in a (Classic) season 6B where the Doctor was pressed into servicce with the Celestial Intervention Agency (CIA). If we accept that concept (and the BBC has included elements of this on its official website in the past) then it is only a small step further to insert an extra regeneration. The Doctor running away (again) would have harsher consequences if she were in the employ of the CIA and that would indicate that they were the one's who employed the Judoon. This fits the fact that the Judoon were planning to take the fugitive back to Gallifrey where the CIA are based. Gat said that Lee had the same training as her which would indicate that both had been officers of the same agency. When the Doctor was eventually released from the CIA's service he/she would have been memory wiped before regenerating to 3. This does raise an issue with the number of regenerations but we have seen that extra regenerations can be awarded by the Time lords so it is not impossible that the CIA, as a covert arm of the High Council woul also have this in their gift. Alternatively, the change of appearance forced on the Second Doctor may not actually be a regeneration - it was never referred to as such at the trial.Finally, although the Second Doctor had a sonic screwdriver, it was never seen to do much more than unscrew bolts so it wouldn't be unreasonable for her not to recognise the all-purpose magic wand that current Doctors carry. Chibnall is reportedly a super hard-core Who fan from Classic days so this storyline might appeal although I still favour the simpler alternate universe idea.

I just posted the same thing, before reading your comment. It's the most plausible idea, as it slots another Doctor into the mix without causing fan uproar. Retcons can work, but you have to be very careful how you do it. Continuity seems to be a dirty word lately, as if old time viewers are somehow disposable and not worth catering to. That might work in a reboot, but when the entire available library is viewable at the click of a mouse you can't be sure if the fan you are alienating is 6 or 60.

It was fantastic to see Jack again but I think that it was deliberate that he didn't see the doctor but found out she is a female. I think that Jack will meet Ruth before he meets Jodie's doctor.

I have a theory! This "new" Doctor is the Doctor from before everything - the very original. She and the rest of the Timelords discovered the "Timeless Child", an entity that was the incarnation of the Universe itself, that took the form of a child. Back then they weren't called the Timelords, but something else entirely. The Timelords imprisoned the Timeless Child and used her to gain control over time and space. This is when they changed their name to the "Timelords". They then had their memories wiped - either by their own volition because they were ashamed at what they did, or the Timeless Child did it.

Ruth is the doctor 1.5 (2 Actually) but the memory of her existence is whipped from Jodi and the other 11 regenerations minds by the timelords, she is either the timeless child or found out the timelords were doing something shady making them force her to regenerate and whipping their minds of ruth's regeneration. The Master said Everything you think you know is a lie. Ok I think one of 3 things are happening 1 the timelord high council wanted to ascend to higher form of life so maybe they went to the cybermen to help them up grade . 2 the high council made the master and the Dr as scouts to explore and conquer other planets but the Dr found out and left 3. Peter capaldi's Dr changed the cybermen base code to allow them to upgrade timelords and we know that john Simms master got to the lift maybe he got upgraded and then went on to destroy gallifrey

It is worth noting that Hartnell to Matt Smith is a complete set of regenerations. There are no spaces along that line. If it's pre-Hartnell, then it has to be another regen-cycle that's been wiped from Doc's memory. If Ruth is post-Jodie, then again memory loss has to be involved. My money's on parallel because it explains so many inconsistencies with the world as a whole and not just the ones with The Master and Doctor.

Possible theory: When the Timelords gave the Matt Smith Doctor a new set of Regenerations they could have manipulated things to create an alternative Doctor that they controlled, except that by the time we get the version we see she has broken away, which would explain the whole 'working with/for the Timelords'? Can't be pre-Hartnell, Hartnell stole the Tardis, any pre-Hartnell wouldn't have the Tardis, would also still be on Galifrey

I freaking loved this episode . I have been enjoying Jodi’s Doctor but this episode blew me way and got me all excited about Doctor Who again . IFirst the return of Capitan Jack I was jumping around my apartment with Joy. Second I read an article that thought this was a future incarnation of the Doctor I believe that is wrong . I think this is not a future doctor but this is the Doctor before the War Doctor (John Hurt) you can tell by (1) Ruth’s TARDIS interior looks like the first Doctors [ William Hartnell] (2) Gallifrey is alive and well plus you get a sense this is before the War with the Dalek’s so its not time locked like the Great Time War. (3) It’s already cannon that the Doctor can wipe out and not remember a lifetime for example The War Doctor. This Dr. Ruth (lol wonder if she gives Sex advice) is obviously a past incarnation of the Doctor Who did something so bad she was wiped from the Doctors memories like the War Doctor , could also elude to the lost child that was hinted at in last season.

2 Theories of Ruth!Doctor. A: She, and by extension Gat[?] & Lee, are from some Alternate Universe. Though the question is why don't they know there from some AU? Better yet, Our Doctor knows about AUs and was in one last season so why didn't they bring it up? B: Ruth!Doc is a future Doctor and something happened with there memory that they don't remember Thirteen and whatnot. And, unless it was Retconned or something, 12 was on Gallifrey a billion or so years in the future in HS/HB. And the Gallifrey that O destroyed is just one further in the timeline. Of course, quick and easy way to solve this would be to have 13 and Ruth mind meld to see what the last thing Ruth remembers is/what her previous face was. But, that is to simple so prob won't happen.

I'm pretty sure Ruth is The Doctor, since the sonic screwdriver said that they were the same person. That, plus a TARDIS, makes it very hard to create a fake. It's possible Ruth is a Zeroth iteration, or somewhere between Seven and Nine. She might have had her mind wiped during the Time War.

As I woke this morning, an idea popped into my head regarding the lone Cyberman mentioned in Doctor Who. Maybe what it wants from the Doctor is some of her regeneration power so it can become flesh again. Out of compassion, she gives it what it wants and it regenerates...into the Master. Because the body of Missy had been left on the Cyberman ship, and we all know what happens when the Cybermen get there hands on a body.

I had to pause when I first heard Jack's voice too, :-D Best Episode in a long long time! I like Doctor Ruth but unless it's an alternate universe situation I have no clue what's going on. It's worth noting she had a Gallifreyan companion, which we haven't seen in Nu Who so that was cool. The lack of a Sonic is probably stranger to people who have only seen the later Doctors. as not all of them have used sonics. I think one of them even said that they were too smart to need it so Dr Ruth's comment seemed plausible, but it was strange that she didn't at least recognise it, though her brains were still unscrambling so maybe that's it. I didn't think it was the Master behind it I immediately thought it was Rassilon and maybe the Master & The Doctor will team up against him. Last thought, We met the Judoon with 10 and Martha who also introduced the Chameleon Arch now we see the Arch again and the Judoon are also back, was anyone else thinking of Martha?

I can only think Ruth is a different timeline Doctor, a potential version, not an actual one. Similar to how the Master died as Missy, the master is an alternate. The regulation of the timelines is collapsing & bleeding into others. The reversal of that allows Gallifrey to return. I can’t see it as pre-hartnel, as how would Ruth have a Police box “stolen” type 40- more likely she’s from Hartnells timeline but is an alternate regeneration to a canon Doctor (maybe 5 based on shirt loudness 😂) I think it all links to a timeless child- an immortal who is at the heart of the untempered schism & effectively regulates the timelines/perhaps is the source of regeneration energy (and most likely a trapped prisoner suffering eternally), but is breaking free and it’s all time is collapsing as a result. Also think the comment Jack made about the alliance sending a device back through time to stop the cyber men could be the root of it. That clips gonna get replayed in a future realisation montage, similar to spymaster.

I'm going with pre-Hartnell. Lemme put it this way: purportedly, throughout the entire universe, the concept of "healer" and "wise man (woman/person)" originating from the Doctor has, in some ways seemed strange. The Doctor is now over 2000 years old, and yes, she's a time traveler, but the Time Lords are one of the older species in the universe, not the oldest--there are canonically older ones--but they're pretty up there. Their species has been around, according to Timothy Dalton Rassilon's words, at least a billion years, or on that order of that many years since they've had time travel technology, and all up until the Doctor's birth, there was never any figure even like him/her? That's seemed a tad strange to me. When 11 became 12, and the Doctor had been through all 12 regenerations, the Time Lords somehow granted a new cycle of regenerations. What if that wasn't the first time? What if it was just the first time where he remembered his previous lives? I think there's been some Who content (uncertain about canonicity) where the 12 regeneration limit is said to be artificially imposed, either by Rassilon or some other founder of Time Lord society. I also remember reading something about how, when Time Lords die, the experiences or knowledge or personalities of who they are just sorta get scrambled back into "genetic material" that itself gets recycled back into new Time Lords again. So what if "the Doctor" actually existed prior to the 13 incarnations and something happens that recreates The Doctor such that the Doctor believes these familiar 13 incarnations are all the ones she's ever known?

The words that come to my mind are confused, intrigued and worried. All rumours have been true so far, so I'm worried about the direct pre-Hartnell route. But I'm still loving the bold direction so far. I'm not sure what is the route here but I agree with Robert, I feel it has to be a parallel universe Doctor or a biologically cloned one. Or... the Valeyard. No writer ever changed the Valeyard's premise upside down, apart from Big Finish, but the sort of dream-like premises the Valeyard is famous for never changed since "Trial of a Timelord", maybe we've been led to believe our Doctor would turn evil at some point, but what if there were 2 Doctors after all? That Doctor even removed the Judoon horn like it was nothing (how would a pre-Hartnell incarnation do that?). And it was the Master (another funny coincidence) who told the Doctor would turn into the Valeyard. But... what if he was never meant to be the Valeyard in the first place? All these prophecies are getting crazier for sure.

We did. We saw the kalediscope effect, which is 2 regenerating. The Time Lords even said it. Implying it was a regeneration being controlled by Gallifrey's technology.

We did not know it was Pertwee until his first story, which opens with that scene repeated, from his perspective, and with a few seconds with him opening the TARDIS doors. I remember that War Games ending, as I own the story. There is no way that 6B is possible, unless the Looms exist, and the CIA created a different version of the Doctor, which could have been done simply by having his DNA taken during either his trial, or during the kaleidoscope scene, which is Two's regeneration.

Your DVD might not have it, but mine does. It settles the discussion about Two in any rate to my mind, because my version confirms that there was no chance he was working for the Time Lords off screen. It is possible that the 6b series is taking place between episodes, while Two and Jamie are alone, like when 6 met them.
