As others have said, on 2nd watch you'll see all the subtle hints against the Dr, first time she sees him she blocks him.. its like it's the first time the Dr has faced racism just because of the Colour of his skin. Its made even more amazing when you know that the final angry scene by Ncuti was his first scene as the Dr after completing sex ( not bad! Lol) education. And a shout out must go to Murray Golds amazing score, it just the icing on the top of the cake. #teamslug

Ya I was the same, (and I tried to emphasize those moments in my edit) The Doctor has encountered Racism before, especially when that guy called Bill a 'Thing' and said she should stand for her 'Betters'...The Doctor just clobbered the guy, but he's never experienced it first hand before, being the target of it. I love how his reaction was just disbelief and utter shock...such a powerful performance by Ncuti who is VERY quickly coming into his own!

The people not being able to walk without the bubble isn't because they are dumb - it's how our senses work. Most people know that our eyes actually invert the light we see and we only see the images the right way up because our brain flips it. What most people don't know is that if you put lenses in front of people's eyes that invert the light, our brains quickly adapt to it, and learn to NOT flip the image. If you then take off the lenses, our brains have to learn to flip the image again. That's what's happening in Finetime - their senses have learned how to navigate, and they have to relearn when they try to do it without the technology.

I think you gave it INFINITELY more thought than Russell T did! hahahaha! I really think he just meant it as a gag on our reliance to technology, but you definitely gave 'The Doctor' explanation!

Im going to be completely honest, I was only half paying attention to this episode until like the last 15 minutes. I hated the people in this episode, even before the twist of what I thought was initially classism. I just hate the self-absorbed social media thing. But the end really brought it up and made me hate them even more. And rewatching it looking back it's racism more than classism. And I’m ashamed that I didn’t catch on sooner.

I really think it was written to do that. Because as a society we're built off racism and it still plagues us today, yet for the most part we ignore or just don't see it because its not right in our face like a giant Slug. And until that reveal its downplayed so much we think its just class, when its what infests the class system and perpetrates it. Brilliant, BRILLIANT episode!

There were soooo many overt and subtle signs of racism and prejudice scattered throughout the episode: 1. Lindy was revolted and blocked the Doctor when he first appeared on her feed. 2. Lindy didnt block Ruby. She was more receptive to Ruby when she appeared on her feed. Lindy spoke to Ruby and believed her over the Doctor. 3. When the Doctor appeared for the second time on her feed, Lindy asked him if the monsters "have something to do with you" (she didnt ask Ruby this, just the Doctor) 4. Lindy told her groupcall to listen to the Doctor and that "i know this is wrong and after this is all over he will be so disciplined, i cant wait, and he doesn't look as stupid as he looks" (of course due to the color of his skin) 5. No person of color lived in Finetime 6. Lindy was shocked to learn that Ruby and the Doctor were in the same room together in such close proximity 7. Lindy told the Doctor "Didnt I block you? I knew it. I just thought you looked the same, but you're the same person I blocked. I was so right to hate you." (Implying all black people look the same) 8. When they met, Lindy told Ruby and the Doctor "Gosh, you two, this is strange." (meaning a white and black person working together) 9. And a few more microagressions towards the Doctor before they met in the final scene AND in the final scene where the racism got blatant.

I was suspecting it could be a race thing when that last scene started but when her friend said "That's voodoo" I was like, "Wow, it is racism! It's *overt* racism!" And then upon re-watching I saw all of the little details I hadn't paid attention before

Also, when she immigrant blocks the Doctor it isn't *just* her blocking him (because I first I thought that could have been because she thought he was "spam") but the disgusted face she does when she blocks him.

Ya every single one of those popped SO much more my second time watching...At first you just think she's scared and a brat, but it becomes so much more apparent that this episode could have been called Microaggressions lol But its written in a way that makes you overlook those microaggressions like we tend to do in society because it doesn't impact us...Russell T wrote maybe one of the best DW episodes to date here!

In the episode "Boom" the Doctor says 'Where there's Snow there's Hope'. There was no Snow this episode. Finetime and the Homeworld were full of Elite White Supremacists, No Hope for any of them. The Dot and the Slugs were like the brains and the brawn. They were the true heroes of the story.

That ending added new meanings to several of Lindy's interactions with the Doctor. (Basically rude, but on a different level than I thought on first watch.) In the priority group chat, everyone was muted by Lindy, so we have no idea what the others may have said about/to the Doctor when he joined them. Considering that 'contaminated' remark at the end, I'm glad we couldn't hear them. Based on Lindy's comments about how the Doctor 'would be disciplined' and how it was 'his duty' to save her, it makes me think that Homeworld did have people of color, and they were subservient in that society. Since Ricky detached from the bubble most of the time, I wonder how much he was still like the others - if he would have taken a chance with the Doctor, or turned away with disdain too. Lindy unknowingly killed their best chance of survival on the outside.

I didn't even consider what her 'friends' would think of seeing The Doctor with her, that is SUCH a good point! (and a clever way to hide the big reveal until later by RTD!) Ya, that looks like a society built of slavery and subjugation. And thats true, not only did he have the knowledge of the outside world, but he was the only one prepped enough to not live in the bubble. Another intesteting thing I haven't seen too many people bring up is the guy with long hair that Lindy went with's surname started with a C as well...I wonder if he had a nickname or if he tricked it somehow...I wonder if we'll be coming back to this society again

Why is their blood blue? I'm not convinced it was the victim's blood that was seen since when Ricky September was killed by the Dot his blood was red. I think it was slug-slime, although, as always, I may be wrong.

Really loved this episode. The bubble turns out to be not just based on classism but on white supremacy. I was thinking halfway through the episode how unlikeable Lindy was but still kind of routing for her until she turned on Ricky. The last 15 minutes when the real nature of the bubble is made known is quite a gut punch. Ncuti was terrific in those last scenes.

Absolutely! It really reminded me of the TORCHWOOD episode 'Human Nature'- has the same feel of a major twist ending. if you havent seen it, I highly recommend it as its kind of a stand alone episode (but TORCHWOOD is good enough to watch all the way through!)

Rewatch this episode with the reveal in mind, and see how different she treats the Doctor and Ruby. I think Ricky is meant to be the 'white doctor' in this episode. He does all the doctor things and she goes a long, but when the Doctor does the doctor things its suddenly unacceptable.

oh ya, its a brilliant take on society's ignorant acceptance of racial microaggressions...Russell T really said let me make you identify with this character and then rip the rug from under you and make you stare in the mirror. Dot and Bubble may be in my top 10. phenomenal episode!

@@DFQreacts I agree! I really struggle to think of another piece of media where the meaning totally changes in the last couple of minutes and recontextualize everything you took for granted! The moment you realize 'wait those guys are all white, most are blond and oh yeah they are white supremacists" is really a gut punch.
