The world of Finetime seems happy and harmonious. But an awful terror is preying on the citizens. Can the Doctor and Ruby make them see the truth before it’s too late?

There were soooo many overt and subtle signs of racism scattered throughout the episode: 1. Lindy was revolted and blocked the Doctor when he first appeared on her feed. 2. Lindy didnt block Ruby. She was more receptive to Ruby when she appeared on her feed. Lindy spoke to Ruby and believed her over the Doctor. 3. When the Doctor appeared for the second time on her feed, Lindy asked him if the monsters "have something to do with you" (she didnt ask Ruby this, just the Doctor) 4. Lindy told her groupcall to listen to the Doctor and that "i know this is wrong and after this is all over he will be so disciplined, i cant wait, and he doesn't look as atupid as he looks" (of course due to the color of his skin) 5. No person of color lived in Finetime 6. Lindy was shocked to learn that Ruby and the Doctor were in the same room together in such close proximity 7. Lindy told the Doctor "Didnt I block you? I knew it. I just thought you looked the same, but you're the same person I blocked. I was so right to hate you." (Implying all black people look the same) 8. When they met, Lindy told Ruby and the Doctor "Gosh, you two, this is strange." (meaning a white and black person working together) 9. And a few more microagressions towards the Doctor before they met in the final scene AND in the final scene where the racism got blatant.

Hmmm. I thought Lindy was an alien. We have no idea how many races, if any, are in her species. Perhaps the Doctor looked so different, it made her defensive? Of course, racism is brought up all the time nowadays if we don't understand something or don't like someone or whatever. Doctor Who is supposedly an entertainment program and not a political science course.

Forget about the slugs killing them. Those kids have 0 survival skills. They've lived in a protected environment where everything was taken care of for them. They're going to die from starvation and exposure. The slugs would have been a quicker death.

Unless they are very lucky, remember Lindy said she always seems to get lucky, and some native tribe takes care of them forcing them to wrestle with the incompatibility between their "god given" ideology and the fact that they had to be rescued by some people who are "not one of them" after having just been saved by someone who is "not one of them". This will either cause them to question their ideology or be filled with resentment turning into seething hatred of anything that is not them. Perhaps even both. Think about it, domed city in the middle of a forest - the great abrogation, they know what black people look like but there aren't any black people - does this hint at a planet wide genocide? Why is only The Doctor going to be punished when this is all over? Is punished a euphemism for executed? Are these green blooded humanoids who are technology dependent, genocidal xenophobes the ancestors of the Thals and Kaleds and is the Wild Woods going to one day become the Petrified Forest and is the planet they are setting out to colonise Skaro? Has The Doctor once again been indirectly responsible for the creation of the Daleks?

I watched it, and was confused at the ending and did not quite get it. Then I watched it again and saw all the subtle racist comments. I was actually angry after watching it a second time. More mad at the white privilege and assumption of superiority over others. Others may disagree, but this was an excellent episode. It makes you see past everyday nuance to see what is really happening.

Wow. Just... wow. (Fantastic acting ❤) I was floored at the ending and immediately rewatched the episode. Right before the prejudice reveal, I was thinking that Lindy didn't deserve to be saved after she sacrificed Ricky to save herself, and wondered how she could live with herself going forward. Then, never mind... Unless there is another like Ricky in that group, all the Finetime residents will end up dead like their parents on Homeworld, especially since it seems like they were bred to be ill-equipped to deal with the world outside their bubble. That ending added new meanings to several of Lindy's interactions with the Doctor. (Basically rude, but on a different level than I thought on first watch.) In the priority group chat, everyone was muted by Lindy, so we have no idea what the others may have said about/to the Doctor when he joined them. Considering that 'contaminated' remark at the end, I'm glad we couldn't hear them. I'm guessing that Homeworld was almost as vapid as Finetime, since the bugs had already wiped it out. And based on Lindy's comments about how the Doctor 'would be disciplined' and how it was 'his duty' to save her, it makes me think that Homeworld did have people of color, and they were subservient in that society. Since Ricky detached from the bubble most of the time, I wonder how much he was still like the others - if he would have taken a chance with the Doctor, or turned away with disdain too. Lindy unknowingly killed their best chance of survival on the outside.

I was sussy after the third or fourth time she wouldn't stop hating on the doctor. Especially when she was quite a bit nicer to Ruby. But I was aghast when she said she thought the doctor was a different person IE black people look the same.. Great episode that recontextialises almost every comment.

Great reaction, thank you! I loved this episode, I did not see where it was going at all. I thought Lindy was going to become a better person through the story. The eventual revelation was seeded so well. I'm mixed race, and there's been so many times I dismissed someones unpleasantness as them having a bad day or me maybe having said something wrong, and it was only looking back that I pieced together what happened in the interaction and realised that no, they were most likely just racist. Granted, I'm autistic, so I expect to miss things sometimes, but I think most people give others the benefit of the doubt to start with; we don't want to go straight to the worst explanation first. I disliked Lindy, but I still mentally made excuses for how she was with the Doctor in the exact same way I've made excuses for how people have been with me. That really hit home; I thought Russell's representation of it was spot on. I'm really looking forward to finding out where the whole Susan Twist thing is going. I have absolutely no ideas right now!

Lindy killed Ricky on purpose. Remember that other blonde guy said as The Doctor was pleading with them, to let him help them. It was something along the lines of you either come with us or you’re executed. Ricky was too woke for them. That’s why Lindy had no issues sacrificing him. He told her he comes out of his bubble, and does his own thing. And look back at what she said about The Doctor after realizing he was who she blocked. You all look the same.

I Like the way the more obvious flaws of her vapip narcissism, classism and lack of empathy helped hide the depths of her hatred if someone isn't used to looking for those kinds of comments true meaning. I Like that she is still quite rude to Ruby for being a working class staff member and even got hoc paul who is slightly Mon mainstream is ignored and has less subscribers than most other people.

I have to say I am liking this series after a bad start .This was the third really good episode so far . As someone who predates the internet I'm thinking this is exactly where the next generation is headed . The first part I felt Lindy was a totally helpless airhead , she even had to learn to walk . It didn't take her long to learn once she was in survival mode and then three her rescuer under the bus . But the open racism - I thought she might have blocked the Doc and listened to Ruby because he was a strange man - was shocking and lack of any sort of gratitude at the end just showed these kids were pretty irredeemable . Really good effects and great acting , has me looking forward to next week in a way I haven't got quite a while . As always it was interesting and enlightening to hear your thoughts on this one .

Planet of the Influencers every bit as awful as I'd expect even before I saw the Monsters 😅 Interesting episode with creative language and unusual vibe, contrasting poppy sounds with more a 'regular' soundtrack . I liked the focus on Lindy , she went from annoying airhead to sympathetic if hopeless, then her true shallow selfish nature was revealed when, frankly, she killed Ricky. 2 quibbles I guess .... 1. I can't work out exactly why the Things were there and who arranged it? Maybe on another watch I will but I tend to not miss on the whole ( as aspect of my Autism makes me quite good at Murder Mystery stuff as I notice small things but anyway..) 2. Shocking though the racism was, I think it would have been more interesting if they had rejected him on finding out his actual age, that despite his current youthful (gorgeous!) appearance , he was -gasp - 'Old', and that would have , in my opinion, made more sense with FineTime and its age restrictions. But on the whole, I like the odd vibe, the digs at Social Media, as I mentioned Influencers, Screen 'Culture' , the Dot and Bubble were nicely done , and for me , even with no monsters or racism, was a horrible enough idea! I was reminded of stories about places putting things like the 'Cross Now /Safe to Walk' pedestrian lights lower the ground for people who walk round always looking down at their phone , or ideas about see through phones to help those people navigate where they step. Chilling stuff 🤣 I hope we are less doomed than this lot at the end, because even if there aren't any of the beasties in the world beyond, there's no way this bunch are managing it as forest Survivalists ! Poor awful Lindy with her smirk . She will end up wishing she had listened.

Then again maybe the Ageism wouldn't have been a strong enough shock .
@liliaeth
@liliaeth 2 ай бұрын
I disagree, if they'd gone with ageism, it wouldn't have worked. Because as much as they didn't want to live with them, they still respected their elders, and would have expected an older person to come save them. The way that they expected their parents, and homeworld to come save them. They wouldn't have wanted to be friends with him, but they'd still have let him save them, and even seen it as expected.

@@AndyRossismyeah the bubble created the slugs because if it tried to kill them directly anyone it failed to kill would be free to go up to other people and the bubbles wouldn't be able to distract them to walk into their deaths with such ease. Their is obviously a massive social compulsion not to turn off your bubble so It'd probably just be ricky and a couple of outliers till it's their turn to get eaten alphabetically.
