One of the main reasons this 2 parter is my favourite 2 episodes of doctor who is that it is such a basic storyline yet it grips you from minute one of the first episode right until the final line of the second episode

“If I believe in anything, I believe in her!“😮 that moment gives me chills. It shows how far she has come as a companion. I’m not the biggest Rose fan but this episode is definitely one of the most interesting in Series 2.

One of my favorite bits of Who trivia is that the final scene of this episode (the stuff of legend part) was the last scene they shot for season 2. It was just the way that the block shooting schedule worked out. David and Billie barely made it through the scene without crying, knowing it would be their last. If you watch the bts for this episode you can see them tearfully hugging after the director calls cut.

The atmosphere, the tone, the music, the themes, the insanely drawn out side characters... Everything about this story hits, and it sets the standard for every story of this format for the rest of the show. The format itself is known as a "base under siege" and was used a lot in Classic Who. A set location with a group of characters picked off one by one by an external alien force/ monster. We saw another effective version of this format earlier in the series with Tooth and Claw, and we will see it again and again in the future, but it never gets old.

This is in my top 3 stories of Doctor Who. The BBC could've literally released this two parter as a movie in the cinema and it would've made a tonne of money. That's how high the quality of this story is.

When the Doctor says he doesn't know about what "the beast" actually was, like cant explain it but its like when a parent says that they don't know something, when you're a kid. The fact we never get an answer for definite leaves it to audience interpretation, which is often more intriguing. Like majority do go with the Beast being The Devil (albeit some of that majority go with the Doctor's truth behind the myth approach/ he was the devil, in the same way Saint Nicholas from 4th Century Turkey was the basis for Santa Claus) but tbf if someone said they understood it as The Beast just being a alien pretending, cant say they're wrong, and they cant say you're wrong either.

A lot of people get confused why rose shot the window instead of Toby. If rose had shot him the beast would've just moved to someone else, getting him sucked into the black hole was the only way to really get rid of him. I dont think she really cared shooting the glass might kill them too, it was all about stopping the beast.

Ah, yes. The time the Doctor faced the literal embodiment of evil...and tossed it into a black hole. It's still alive, of course. You can't kill a concept. That said, it can't feel good to be compressed with the pressure of a black hole for eternity. When they imprisoned it on a planet, they were being kind.

The only problem with the philosophy of "outside the universe" vs "before the universe" is that they're effectively the same thing. Space-time does not exist outside the universe, that's what defines the universe as a physical place. Without space-time, no universe. Which means that outside of the universe is functionally no different than before the universe. By definition, any God would, (The God of the Bible in this case) is an Eternal being that exists outside of space-time and matter. Eternal means that time has no bearing on the creators existence. Of course, The Devil making claims that he pre-exists the universe is also suspect, given that he would have been created during/after creation, not before. Have you ever seen Event Horizon, CNR?
