Hi, I'm Chris! Welcome to my channel. I react to movies & tv shows hoping to represent what it's really like to experience them for the first time. If you enjoy, you can support me by liking the video, subscribing to the channel, and letting me know your thoughts in the comments.
Captain Jack Harkness is back with a bit more of an edge this time around. It was great following Gwen as she began an investigation that led her into a whole new world! I am excited to see how this series develops and the kinds of stories they tell.

So you've actually seen a few of these actors before. Eve Myles, the one playing Gwen Cooper was the servant girl from The Unquiet Dead that died to stop the Gelf. Toshiko Sato actually appeared briefly in Aliens of London (the ep w/ the Slitheen), she was conducting the autopsy on the fake pig alien.
@paulpenna5615
@paulpenna5615 4 ай бұрын
Without spoiling anything, Naoko Mori was even credited as Dr. Sato in "Aliens of London", so she's definitely intended to be the same character from the start. Eve Myles played Gwyneth in "The Unquiet Dead", here she plays a character with the similar name of Gwen, which at least implies a connection between the characters.

Torchwood is a really interesting show. Episodes can vary wildly in quality in pretty much every season, but when it's good it is very good. Offers a lot of thought-provoking ideas, a lot of which they could never do on Doctor Who because of its more all ages vibe.

I think this was the first time I ever saw the wonderful Indira Varma, who played Suzie for just this one episode yet left such an impression. Since then she seems to have been in everything, including Game of Thrones, and I've seen her on stage twice - and will see her again in a few days, playing Lady Macbeth opposite Ralph Fiennes. A well-deserved winner of an Olivier for Present Laughter a few years ago. Yes, I'm a fan. It's been ages since I've seen any Torchwood, really looking forward to this journey.

So excited to see you watch 'Torchwood'. It was on BBC3 for the first series which was a new channel aimed at a younger adult audience from the BBC. It's budget was small, but it developed a loyal following and was promoted to BBC2 for series 2 (and a slightly bigger budget) and BBC1 for series 3 which was appointment TV as it was shown over one week and was utterly brilliant - real water cooler moments. I loved it from this first episode - I liked how complex the characters are, and of course I loved Capt Jack from DW. It was shown at 9pm so it was 'post watershed' which meant there could be a bit more swearing and sex, and (slightly) more gore, and they did get slightly carried away with that at first. Some of the stories are absolutely brilliant, right from the first series. But I loved every episode (at least until the end of series 3).

I believe you'll enjoy this series if you enjoyed the first episode. True, there are some episodes that fall into it being so edgy that it becomes almost juvenile, especially with this first season, but there are some truly heartbreaking sequences and entire episodes that are so deliciously dark sci-fi, I still think about them after all these years later.

Torchwood is awesome. It was created to what is called "post-watershed" time. Which I guess is like our "prime time", or maybe later. It's when they can show more adult content. Doctor Who aired during a more family-friendly hour. Another spin-off, Sarah Jane Adventures (featuring the wonderful former companion Sarah Jane Smith) was aimed at an audience younger than Doctor Who.

Torchwood is more adult then Doctor Who
@SuperDrocket
@SuperDrocket 4 ай бұрын
While true, the problem is that it's frequently "adult" in the sense of what a horny 14 year old boy imagines what adult means. Which means that it's often not so much mature as it is tittering at semi-naked women in Maxim magazine. The second episode of the show is pretty much a perfect example of that. Fortunately the show gets a lot better as it goes along, with season 2 having a much more serious tone, and season 3 legitimately being 'adult' in the sense of it being a serious, mature storyline.

The big flaw in Torchwood and Dr Who is the lack of extras. Who maintains Torchwood? Who mops the floors and empties the trash? Wouldn't a team maintain that pterodactyl? Dr. WHo very regularly goes to war with a planet of about twelve people.. Torrchwood gets deep, though it's not quite Dr. Who level. But the later miniseries were great.

One of my favourite series, and one I still miss to this day. Captain Jack makes James Bond look lazy. A lot of people don't like how emotion the series can get, but I like that there's a lot of humanity in it. It isn't just about the aliens and fancy gadgets. It's about a group of people going through their own issues and trying to do their jobs at the same time. I like that, especially early on, you never know what you're going to get from each episode. It can be very serious and emotional with good social commentary, or be absolutely ridiculous. The cheesiness of Season 1, while enjoyable, tends to wane, thankfully, as the series goes alone and by the time you get to series 3, it's excellent. You won't be disappointed with this one. I wish they'd go back to it and at least do a TV movie or miniseries. This was one of my favourite shows when it came out and as a Canadian, I'm proud to say that we helped finance the first 3 series. It was a co-production of BBC and CBC. Russell T. Davies brought back Doctor Who after a long absence, but I think this was the series that was his baby. It feels like a passion project.

I didn't feel the problem with the fourth was that it was Americanized. It was more that they had about 5 episodes worth of story and it was a 10 episode series. It's just stuffed with filler, minor plotlines that were clearly added to eat up time. It's especially a problem because they clearly wanted the show to have a feeling of urgency, a race against time, which is constantly undercut by wasted time. "We have to hurry and solve this problem, or terrible things will happen! But first lets have a long, slow conversation and then kill 20 minutes with a pointless side mission. Quickly, or the world is doomed!"

2006: When a supposedly sympathetic member of the main cast could just casually straight up date rape multiple people in the first episode. Consent? What's that? Times have definitely and thankfully changed. You'd never write that now.

The magic spray is something that he shouldn’t be using (and Torchwood would tell him so). But your idea is that it should be censored right out and not appear on television; wow. I wouldn’t go that far. Bear in mind that one of his colleagues is murdering people to pursue private experimentation, and you apparently saw nothing wrong with that appearing on television. Also remember that the times change, and they carry on changing. From 2006 to 2024 is 18 years; in another 18 years, what will be OK to show on television? No-one knows.

@@jonathan.palfrey The problem is that it's played for comedy and Owen isn't treated like the villain. Not that there's date rape in the episode. That's fine if it's condemned like Suzy killing people was. That part just aged incredibly poorly in a post metoo world. You would simply never write a character the audience is supposed to like doing anything like that nowadays.

@@VincornelisSuzie was also treated sympathetically, as a basically good character who happened to be behaving badly because of her obsession; although what she was doing was worse. I take your point that Owen’s bad behaviour was played for comedy while Suzie’s was treated more seriously, and that was an error of judgment by RTD; but I think it was already an error of judgment in 2006. It would be interesting to interview RTD about it.

The “consent” was manufactured. For me he didn’t rape or sexually assault anyone. He did make himself incredibly desirable to the couple by adding something to “himself” Didn’t actually “drug” anyone else. I’m not saying it’s a great thing to do but its not accurate to call it date rape.
