On the last day of Comic-Con International, CraveOnline spoke with Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman about Smith's impending departure from the series and whether he'll come back in the future while Coleman gets ready to break in a new Doctor.
Then we caught up with "Doctor Who" showrunner, Steven Moffat who told us what to expect in the 50th Anniversary special, as well as the qualities that he wants to see in the 12th Doctor. As a bonus, Moffat also shares his advice for dealing with writer's block!
But that's not all! Screenwriter Mark Gatiss also dropped by to discuss the upcoming TV movie, "An Adventure In Space and Time;" which will dramatize the creation of "Doctor Who." David Bradley ("Game of Thrones") also shared how he prepared to step into the role of both the First Doctor and William Hartnell in the film.

awwwww I love Matt Smith, I really do! I'm going to miss him so much but, just like I did when Matt first started, i'm going to keep an open mind and I hope to enjoy whoever will replace him! I will also miss Matt and Jenna's amazing on and off screen chemistry and I hope that the new Doctor will get on as well with Jenna! But I can't wait for Doctor Who to move on once more, Matt has had an amazing run but the time is definitely right for him to go! :-D xxxxx

I was the cameraman for this...They had just been interviewed by Rotten Tomatoes, who handed them tomatoes for their interview. Right after that they ended up throwing the bouncy tomatoes at Moffatt down the press line...A moment I wish I had been in the right position to film!

In the episode "The Doctor's Wife", which was written by Neil Gaiman, the Doctor mentioned a Time Lord who always regenerated and had the same Ouroboros tattoo, and he also said that there was this one time when the Time Lord had regenerated into a woman; therefore, it is possible for Time Lords to regenerate into the opposite sex.

Do you remember in The Doctor's Wife episode (written by Neil Gaiman) where the TARDIS becomes a woman? The Doctor talks about a Timelord male who regenerated into a woman. So it is established in canon :)

A true Doctor Who fan doesn't want to know the Doctor's name. That's how I see it anyhow, we should never know his name, he is the Doctor. Also, Moffat saying we don't know things about the Doctor, what he listed, we do know some stuff that he said we don't know, like children/grandchildren etc.

I want The next Doctor to be The Doctor. :) He is defined by his character and always will be. He is not defined by gender. If the show becomes Dogtor Who because a dog was the best actor (Okay, extremely unlikely, I know), I will keep watching. After all, I'm a Doctor Who fan - so a fan of EVERYTHING the show has to offer - not a "The Doctor's got to be a man or the universe will explode and I'll stop watching" fan. Whovian first. :)

His counted as the 13th as John Hurt's Doctor became The Doctor, his not the War Doctor anymore. So Matt's Doctor is the 13th and we're onto the 14th Doctor now.

One of the draws of the show is every man wants to be the doctor and every woman wants to fall in love with him and be his companion. If you take that element away by regenerating him into a woman you will lose a large portion of you audience....but I think Moffat is smart enough to understand that!

I don't think there would be such a big deal on gender, its just fitting it into story line, I think it be best if the doctors just stayed as male protagonist. And if The Doctor did become a female im gonna laugh when he realizes his voice is higher, and chest is no longer flat . THAT would be funny and cute to see. But Just keep The Doctor Male. nothing wrong with it. just keeps the tradition going!

I feel yah, but it is possible to change sex since it was mentioned in an episode than a timelord was able to switch at will. Now we might not get the Doctor to do it because he never finished school as we all know and that is why he cant actually choose what he will look like after the regeneration like others can. But more than that, to me is like having Superman be a woman, it just doesn't fit. If you want a woman timelord then introduce one as a character but dont change the doctor.

{it's possible - The Doctor mentions The Coursayer (sp?) - in 'The Doctor's Wife' as being "and a woman once - oh she was a bad bad girl" - yes it's possible. Why wouldn't it make sense? Being a male previously, like every other part of his personality, and physical appearance (hair colour, looks} is irrelevant with regard to regeneration - it's different every time. People place too much importance on gender - it would make perfect sense and be perfectly normal either way.

Yeah, but the audience likes the whole romantic hint. There was no romance with Amy, Martha, Donna, and Clara, but there's always some sort of hint (except with Donna, because she's fucking awesome). I mean, I wouldn't mind having the companion the same sex as the doctor, but I just really want the doctor to stay male. Just like I would like my favorite female characters to stay female or my favorite male characters to stay male. Just my personal opinion.

i don't want the doctor to be a woman. i want the doctor to be a man. i'm not being "sexist" or anything. you wouldn't want river song to regenerate as anything but a woman if she could still regenerate (granted i want her the same always and i'm curious as to how they tie up her character in november). the doctor is a man, and he'll always be a man, regardless. to make him a woman completely levels his character and forces her to change the sex of his companions.

Yeah, but the Doctor's always been effectively remade after every regeneration anyway, and that's sort of the whole idea. Matt Smith was very different from David Tennant, and he was different again from Eccleston. The Doctor as a woman could be an absolute sham, or a completely amazing masterpiece. It depends entirely on how they write the role, and who plays it.
