The implication that the Doctor and Amy had given Vincent a new lease on life only to paint the image of the tardis blowing up and believing the two people who helped him died is so tragic
@obiwankenobi687
@obiwankenobi687 Ай бұрын
I always found that bit a bit offensive. Richard Curtis writes a beautiful story about Van Gogh, grief, depression, madness and a lonely misunderstood man. Then Moffat comes along, ruins it and has Vincent have a crazy fit over seeing visions of the TARDIS exploding, even the slightest hint that this drove him mad and possibly to kill himself is just a bit unnecessarily gross and unneeded

I never really considered this - it would have gone against the whole 'pile of good things and bad things' point that the Doctor makes at the end of the episode. These visions of the Tardis exploding would go on the pile of bad things, for sure - but the idea that Vincent had a new lease on life, and that the visions ultimately led to his suicide would be antithetical to the whole point of Vincent & The Doctor.
@cometgirl217
@cometgirl217 Ай бұрын
Oof! This take is so (beautifully) dark. DARK because of the outcome, but also somewhat BEAUTIFUL for giving Vincent a possible, alternative (and love-based) “reason” for his final decision. *BTW, I am NOT trying to discount his/others’ motive(s) for self-deletion. Mental illness is often an oppressive, persistent battle with a slew of “victims,” almost as many “survivors,” and occasional victors.” Still, I’m surely not alone in perpetually hoping to discover a somewhat “understandable” explanation for friends/family members who have taken the same course of action.. Thus, attributing Vincent’s end to “despair in light of his friends’ *apparent* demise” (rather than a life-long, internal, often fatalistic battle) is oddly comforting 🫣

I love that summary the Doctor gives of the thing locked in the Pandorica. "A nameless horror, soaked in the blood of a billion, billion worlds. One day it would drop out of the sky and tear down your whole world." Then when you realize the prison was built for the Doctor and that's why he doesn't know about it. It's taking the Oncoming Storm of Davies a logical twelve steps further, and it's amazing to realize how the Doctor's enemies see him. But it's a valid take on the suffering and damage the Doctor can unleash (and has). The Doctor as a valid monster is an idea that Moffatt really likes to play with, and one thing I do enjoy about his run. And Smith's portrayal, because his Doctor understands well what he can be. Rory the Auton (a Nestene duplicate, an evolved form of the mannequins in the very first episode of NuWho) introduces one of my favorite twists and pieces of character development in the series. But I'll talk a lot more about him after you see the next episode. I can't wait!!

The Pandorica speech has become an iconic fan favourite. To the point where there are recordings of at least five other actors who've played the Doctor reading it as special requests at convention panels and putting their own spin on it. On top of that fans who have a skill for voice acting have done versions for all of the Doctors. I would say that 3 out of the top 5 Doctor speeches come from Moffats tenure as show runner so you have lots to look forward to in that respect.

@quintuscrinis I agree that VotD is the weakest episode of the season, but I'd still say it's a pretty good episode, and I think that speaks to the strength of S5 overall. The Pandorica! Yes, the vortex manipulator is from Captain Jack I believe. Also I love how the past episodes like Van Gogh and Churchil built up to this. Freaking love that River makes sure she see's the Doctor by messing with time/history just a little. Who the heck is that random guy? Don't know him, ah well! I like how you are concerned for River when you know she must live in order to die in the Library XD All the bad guys finally learned to work together to trap the Doctor. It's kind of amazing because Dalek's don't work with others because they think they are the superior beings but they all fear the universe being destroyed by the Doctor.

Love this 2 part finale so much. Only thing that irks me every time i rewatch it is how totally out of character it is for the daleks to join that alliance. But it makes for great TV so whatever i guess. Back to how much i love this episode, the opening showing all the chatacters weve come to meet over the season, all working together to warn the doctor is SO cool. The reveal of all the species who have come to 'take' the pandorica feels like the first time weve seen 11 truly look overwhelmed and even fearful. Love how Alex delivers that long line of names in that scene. Rorys reveal and the doctors reaction is both shocking and comedy gold And ofc the pandorica speech is absolutely iconic and really highlights perhaps for the first time just how big his reputation and even infamy has become at this point. The nestene consciousness' return with the autons and the reveal that came with it was really cool to see, first time we've seen them since all the way back in S1E1 And one of the most underrated short speeches in modern who, 11's desperate plea to the alliance to listen to him and believe him as they lock him in the pandorica. Amys and Rivers deaths, the Doctor locked in the pandorica, every star going out leaving Earth alone in the silent void of space mirrored by the abrupt ending of music or any sound. Silence truly falls. Such an incredible cliffhanger. I remember being so shocked when i watched this all those years ago as a kid. Had no idea how the doctor was going to get out of this one!

A few notes. The speech the Doctor gives about "letting someone else go first" led to Smith landing a major movie role, though I'm afraid at the moment I can't remember which movie. The date given on River's handy little gadget was the date the episode first aired. The reference to a race called Draconian is a call back to the Third Doctor story Frontier in Space, which saw...well, spoilers, but there was a potential for an interplanetary war between the human empire and a race called the Draconians, which were meant to look reptilian, though I don't think the make up department quite got the memo. We also see a Hoix, one of the species being pursued by the Tenth Doctor and Rose when Elton Pope blunders in at the beginning of Love and Monsters. And on a personal note, the initial exchange between the Doctor and Roman Rory, along with the "distraction", are very, very, very high up on my list of favourite scenes in all of Who.

I absolutely LOVE how Moffat writes loneliness. Episode 1, Amy's abandonment issues are cranked up to 11 by the Doctor. In the Angel episodes, she's isolated from everyone to the point where she can't even open her eyes without becoming one of the "lonely assassins." In Amy's Choice, she finally commits to Rory before losing him and her memories of him in the Silurian episodes. In Vincent and the Doctor, she gets some catharsis for her loss but it still ends with Vincent's grief killing him. And in this episode, her repressed love for Rory manifests a duplicate of him and her grief finally kills her. Season 5 has one of the best and most devastating companion arcs for me

Like one of the best penultimate cliffhangers, bar none. Funny, engaging, emotional, and best of all, uncertain. And Rory! Watching it for the first time was just jaw dropping. So good! Fun fact: they actually DID film at Stonehenge but were given a limited amount of time, so some of it was filmed on site, and some were recreated to look like it. Hi, I'm a Whovian. LOL

The Stonehenge speech is one of the Doctor Who clips I replay every so often. It was just so epic - even if the real reason all the aliens backed off wasn't because of the Doctor's speech, but because they knew it wasn't time yet.

the end of this episode is beautiful the music cutting out as if the song of all those stars is dying. some of my favorite details are the moment where the doctor describes the "nameless terrible thing" the pandorica could contain describing it as a "trickster or warrior" only to be inadvertently and perfectly describing himself also the moment where he doesn't realize Rory is back is quite sweet in a prior episode he calls Vincent, Rory he has likely still been picturing Rory there having started to like him and feeling horrible about his death hence the little poke to confirm he is actually there.

When the played the iconic "hello Stonehenge" music at The Proms they had a bunch of aliens come on and menace the audience and the orchestra. When the doctor gives his grand speech and the music comes to an end all the aliens immediately left. You can easily find a video of it on youtube.

One of the great things about this episode is that the first time the 10th doctor met river she told him he's not her doctor and that her doctor could make entire armies run away just by telling them his name and now finally we see the moment she was talking about when the 11th scares off all of his old enemies Its a great subtle callback

Some scenes were filmed at the real Stonehenge, Wiltshire. They could only afford to shoot during one night and spent the only hour of daylight in the morning shooting a three-minute dialogue sequence. The cast and crew had to abide by regulations; they were not allowed to touch the stones, bring heavy equipment in, and the lighting had to be done from the floor. Regardless, The Doctor and Amy appear to touch several of the rocks. Dropped from the episode Liz Ten's explanation that most of the residents of Starship UK were now back on Earth, but that she had remained behind to care for the ageing Star Whale.

This episode was also a bit bonkers! So many folks from the Doctor's timeline! Here is a good example of time being a big ball of timey wimey wobbly wobbly stuff! It is funny to me that the Doctor describes the being that must be in the box and then goes to the other aliens and reminds them just how dangerous he is! Just as dangerous as the being the Doctor described!! As for Rory and Amy, I wonder how this will affect Amy moving forward, especially since she now has memories of Rory! This episode was fun and surprising! And the cliffhanger was just right!

I will admit the first time I saw this, when The Doctor started describing the thing trapped in the Pandorica a part of me was like 'depending on your pov, that could be The Doctor'. Because, it IS. 'A nameless horror' The Doctor has no name, or at least it isn't known to anyone. 'soaked in the blood of a billion, billion worlds' Daleks, Cybermen, Racnoss, the Family of Blood, the Slitheen...his hands aren't exactly clean) 'it would drop out of the sky and tear down your whole world.' WE see him coming in to save people but, from the pov of the people not travelling with him, he just pops in and suddenly their world is turned upside down.

Almost, although that date is "Amy's" time, and everything was constructed from around that and around her. This episode was occurring in 102AD so long before he met Amy. The Tardis blew up in 102AD - wibbly, wobbly, timey-wimey - Oh, and don't worry, it gets even more complicated timewise in the next episode.

Watching you try to track all of the timey-wimeyness reminds me of the scene in Austin Powers when he goes cross-eyed trying to figure out time travel. I can't wait to see how you handle the next episode. 😉🤯 This is my favourite finale in all of new Who and part of the reason why this is my favourite season. Moffat admitted that this was pretty much him being a schoolboy dumping all of the toys on the floor to play with, but it works so well. As you've probably guessed, the various aliens mentioned have all appeared in the show before, whether in Classic Who, New or both. You probably didn't realise either that Rory and the Romans are Autons - the classic series enemy that you might remember as the living plastic mannequins from the first episode of New Who fan. As a huge Auton fan, as soon as I saw their hands open to reveal the guns, I flipped out! That's their signature weapon. You'll notice that the Doctor has a propensity for speeches during the Moffat era, and the Stonehenge speech is one of the most epic. You can even find videos of other Doctor actors being asked to recite it at conventions. If Matt Smith hasn't won you over by this point then you must be a Cyberman. Oh and Vincent's painting of the exploding TARDIS became a very popular image and it quickly made its way on to posters and the like. I think pretty much every Whovian of that era has that poster, including me. Also, in River's message for the Doctor on the cliff face, you can see the Greek letters Theta and Sigma. In classic Who it was established that Theta Sigma was the Doctor's nickname at the Time Lord academy. This is an absolutely brilliant episode and I can't wait to see what you think of the finale. I'm predicting that your mind will be blown in multiple ways. The way Moffat weaved the arc for this season is truly masterful.

That rousing speech of the Doctor's -- in retrospect, everyone around must have shaking their heads about how backwards he'd gotten it, and how silly he'd feel when he figured it out. It was a great speech, but a total waste, though it did occupy the Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans, Judoon, and Nestenes for the half hour it took for Amy to wake up.

Fun fact, Stonehenge, while indeed already ancient, looked very different back then to how it does today, before both lots of vandalism and degradation, and Victorian attempts at "restoration" of the structure, when stones where propped back upright, moved into neater circles etc.
@swanchamp5136
@swanchamp5136 Ай бұрын
The Victorians have a lot to answer for with their moving of ancient stones, barrows, ruins and so on. The worst thing I heard they did was 'unwrapping' parties using Egyptian mummies. Then there's the rich lords who would create fake circles and barrows/ruins on their land and gardens using stones from real ones with no indication where the real site was so those historical sites are lost.

I LOVE the painting going through so many of his friends, them all working together to get the message to him! And River is always just so brilliant. This is one of my favourite two parters and is so much fun. Yes, they really did get to film at Stonehenge! As for what order things happened in, essentially the crack in time is showing up throughout all of time and space, but it all originates from the same event, so basically all the cracks we’ve seen lead to the same moment in time, that white light is one moment and each crack is a separate connection to it, if that makes sense?

Super-duper obscure trivia: Others have already commented about the Autons from waaaaaaaay back in episode 1, however the “I am talking” line was first used by The Doctor in that same episode when Nine is arguing with the Nestene Consciousness. Also, and I’ll keep this vague enough not to be remotely spoilery: I’m fairly certain there’s a callback to an episode of Classic Who in this one. If you spotted it, well done. :)

his speech was so good but after understanding what the Pandorica is and why it was built, the speech becomes kinda ironic. all you saw was what you thought but that doesn't always mean a thing, death in season 5 and 6 is kind of like the revolving door of arkham asylum. The TARDIS btw doesn't "really" have a past or future since it exists in all of time at the same time and the explosion that has happened/happens/will happen does so everywhere in existence. Confused? Understandable. Not all questions will be answered and you will have even more of those after the next episode but you will have the time of your life, promise. Told you you would love 11 :)
