I think this scene gave the ultimate explanation of the navigation system always being "on the fritz." It was never about the navigation system; it was about the operating system, which became a bit too sentient.

If you don't remember, when the Tardis says that the Doctor calls her "sexy", it's really a reference to the 11th Doctor's very first episode ("The Eleventh Hour"). When the Doctor first sees the new remodeled Tardis, he says "oh, you sexy thing".

I love the way the Tardis says "Goodbye" to her Thief the first time they meet, and then says "Hello" at the end. There's something really satisfying about that. Also, Rory asking the Doctor about his bedroom is a great thought - it's rare to see companions rooms in the Tardis, but we've never seen the Doctor's bedroom, and it does make you wonder if he had one, and what it would be like.

Niel Gaiman is so good at taking a small piece of dialogue and making it a canon reshaping event. This idea that the Tardis goes where it wants to go was always in the heads of whovians going all the way back to the 3rd Doctor. The 1st and 2nd Doctors always had landing problems but they piloted it accurately. When the secret of the Tardis was taken away from 2 and then given back later to the 3rd Doctor thats when the Tardis started going off course and the Doctor would be put in places he seemingly needed to be. Its been a plot device since then for literally 50 years. To have it canonized was a huge step in the relationship of the Doctor and the Tardis.

When my family first saw this, we got to the bit where Amy & Rory leave the main console room and we saw the corridor. My kids and I simultaneously yelled "YES!!", to the utter bemusement of my wife who is a Not-We (she enjoys watching the show but doesn't get involved in fandom or lore and whatnot). Why were we excited? Because in the whole of the revived series the only bits of the TARDIS we'd seen were the console room and a glimpse of the wardrobe. Little things.

The first time I re-watched the Series 1 finale "The Parting of the Ways" after viewing this episode, I damn' near broke when Rose, having stared into the Heart of the TARDIS, says to the Doctor, "I want you safe...My Doctor." because it seemed to me that was the TARDIS speaking as much as it was Rose.

@joerosenman3480

In so many ways. I believe the best way to explain it-in terms we limited humans can understand-is the TARDIS consciousness was tacitly invited to possess Rose, which-done with consent-left Rose able to participate in the joined consciousness. Because of that, Rose was able to direct the TARDIS to alter (!) time with Jack so that Jack **must** live. That’s a very human emotion the TARDIS actualized. Had the TARDIS acted alone (which it couldn’t, but that aside) time would have been selectively reversed for Jack until the point before the Dalak execution but that’s not what happened. So thanks to Rose’s precise imprecision and the deific powers of the TARDIS Jack became an impossibility. I’ve read speculation that the TARDIS engineered Rose’s conception before marriage (it certainly happened in the mid-80s but not casually) to ensure the sequence of events culminating in Bad Wolf and Rose joining with the TARDIS consciousness. It’s an interesting idea-but my counter to that is the path culminates in Doctor 9 dying *because* of the TARDIS consciousness (which *didn’t* kill Rose… !?!) Was that the only way to deal with the mutant Dalek invasion? Was a regen at that point inevitable? Could be. But as I said, this is all speculation. I don’t know of anything beyond what RTD put onto the page/screen from which to judge. 🌝

Wow your intuition on this episode was on point! I really enjoy this one, it's both fun and heartwarming. House was such a cruel villain tho. The games he played with Rory and Amy brought to mind a fact I heard about orcas that after they've had their fill of seals they'll grab one more and play with it before killing it. The TARDIS in human form was absolutely adorable. She was so entertaining and so lovely. I think it did both her and the Doctor a lot of good to air some thoughts out. It was so sad that she had to go but at least she finally got to say hello 💚

The Eleventh Doctor Companion mentions additional script elements that were cut before broadcast, including the fact the TARDIS indicates that the chameleon circuit is not broken - she simply stays as a police box because The Doctor likes it; and, during their farewell conversation, the TARDIS was to tell The Doctor he was forgiven for his actions in the Time War providing narrative bookending to the earlier discussion about The Doctor wanting to be forgiven.

Nice, you were all over this one, hit all the points i'd say :). One of my absolute faves. Suranne Jones is so good as TARD-Idris, pitch perfect IMO and the "oldest, truest companion" aspect really resonates. I also enjoy when Who does the "perspective flip" trick - for the TARDIS essence a box is _freedom_ not a prison because like us, she's bigger on the inside. Whereas, as 11 puts it, "See, House, that's your problem: size of a planet but inside you are just... so... small!". And "It's not impossible as long as we're alive" pretty much sums up the Doctor for me.

Oh one thing I thought was awesome, your watermark of the show logo to ware off the copyright gods at around 6:35 nearly lined up with the actual TARDIS on screen, it just was slightly off, (much like how she is in this episode) and it was a fun, well isn’t that a fun metaphorical coincidence.

This is such a classic and my stand-out favourite of Series 6. It's such a beautiful episode examining the most important relationship in the show in a way that had never been done onscreen before. Although, the TARDIS had appeared in human form once before in an audio drama. Neil Gaiman wrote this episode, and if you don't know who he is, he's an acclaimed English author who's penned some of the greatest sci-fi and fantasy novels and comics of the last forty or so years. His work includes The Sandman (comic), Lucifer (comic), American Gods, Stardust, Coraline, Good Omens (co-written with Terry Pratchet), and countless others. Coincidentally, Martin Sheen, who voices House in this episode, would go on to star in the Good Omens TV show alongside David Tennant. I absolutely adore how the TARDIS and the Doctor's relationship is depicted here, it's just so beautiful. Especially the idea that she stole him just as much as he stole her and that she always takes him where he needs to go. Also, the whole "Did you wish really hard"/"You call me Sexy" scene is one of my favourite comedic moments ever. 😂😂 I believe the makeshift TARDIS console was designed by a child for a competition and it clearly has some elements of past consoles. It's crazy to think that this was the first time TARDIS corridors were shown in New Who. Classic Who, being slower paced, used to showcase a lot more of the TARDIS' rooms and corridors, with characters often milling about. What they do here though with Amy and Rory is just downright terrifying. It makes you realise how easily those infinite corridors can become the stuff of nightmares. Oh and a nice little Easter egg: the Eye of Orion was a planet featured in the 20th anniversary special, The Five Doctors. It's supposed to be the most tranquil place in the universe and the Fifth Doctor and his companions were seen relaxing there. I'm so glad you liked this one Jules, it's pretty well universally beloved. Here's to the next one! "The only water in the forest is the river..."

A masterpiece episode, though neil gaiman really screwed up with the "pull to open" bit. The "pull to open" sign refers to the phone on the outside of the tardis, not the actual doors. Maybe it was the TARDIS's error, not Neil Gaiman? Given that the TARDIS created its own exterior based on observing a Police Box, perhaps it misunderstood the written instruction and made a door which opens both ways.

@anthonycaracausa9895 Ай бұрын
@@Scripture-ManYes; in fact, that was the case from the very beginning. This also brings up an addendum to my theory of the TARDIS's sentience: You know how, when a person adopts a style they like above all else, they will stick to that style and not shift from it unless/until they get tired of it? Suppose the OS of the TARDIS fell in love with the police-box look and, aside from slight to minor detail refits, has chosen that look as its end-all/be-all style...and likely will not get tired of it any time soon? That means the chameleon circuit is not fused by a malfunction; it was fused by the OS itself and could operate at any time if the OS chose to let it operate.

How cool was it to see the coral 9 & 10 Tardis room although in the darkness. Its considered the second control room and makes me think after every redesign the secondary tardis control room is the previous one. The 9 & 10 set was actually kept after the filming of the 11th hour but was moved to the Doctor Who experience which i think is where they filmed that part Also fun fact this episode was written before Matt Smith was even cast as the doctor and it was written by Neil Gaiman who is very much controversial atm

They have been together through so much pain and joy, she may have sometimes taken him to places he didn't want to go but she knew where he needed to be. I absolutely love the conversation between the Tardis and the Doctor, it's so cute. Just imagine if the Tardis could always talk, the Doctor's one big problem is he gets lonely and the only companions he can get are humans with short life spans. He could have another to talk to and talk to him for the rest of his life. It's sad that it couldn't be.

I LOVE this episode. I now refer to ‘Idris’ whenever I’m talking about the TARDIS’ personality, or being alive, like ‘the Tardis’ is the ship but Idris is her personality, her spirit, her intelligence, the bit of the TARDIS that makes decisions and acts of her own accord. This is so beautiful, such a great exploration of the relationship between the Doctor and his box, and her sense of time/tenses, her awareness of the companions, it’s all just so brilliant. One of my favourites. Also where I learned about Petrichor lol. The reason the pool is one of the rooms burnt up is because there was going to be a scene in the pool with Amy but Karen Gillan wasn’t a good swimmer so they couldn’t do it. Suranne Jones (Idris) was SO excited by this role. She just kept pointing at the TARDIS and giggling ‘That’s me! I’m the TARDIS!’

Now that this story is behind us, I can share my theory which this story played a huge part in forming. The Doctor had said several times in the past that the TARDIS was a living thing-something which I admitted was beyond my ability to comprehand when I was younger (and in fact one of the reasons another sci-fi genre confused me in one of *its* stories). But, as the idea of a sentient machine became more believable to me, I was able to come up with this theory. The Time Lords conceived and built the Type-40 series of TARDISes to be the largest and most advanced vessels in the universe. Part of that advancement was in the operating systems (or OS, for letterspeak geeks in the real world), which had neural-net programming-essentially, learning computers. The more exposed to the universe the OSs became, the more they learned...and the more self-aware they became, eventually doing what they wanted (or, as Idris put it, needed) to do, sometimes against the will of the Time Lord crews. That is why the Type-40s were withdrawn from service and replaced with other models, with limited learning capacities and smaller sizes: More manageable. The OS of the Doctor's TARDIS has reached a level of sentient awareness that it has effectively become a living thing, though not in the form of an organism. Ergo, it's a living machine.

One of my all-time favorite episodes of all of Eleven's adventures, written btw by Neil Gaiman. There was also a really sweet song about this episode performed by Amanda Palmer, who was at one time married to Gaiman. Have a listen, it is very cool, plus there's a special guest who helps out. Enjoy (see reply).

In 1814, Pierre Simon Laplace published what may have been the first scientific articulation of causal determinism: We may regard the present state of the universe as the effect of its past and the cause of its future. An intellect which at a certain moment would know all forces that set nature in motion, and all positions of all items of which nature is composed, if this intellect were also vast enough to submit these data to analysis, it would embrace in a single formula the movements of the greatest bodies of the universe and those of the tiniest atom; for such an intellect nothing would be uncertain and the future just like the past would be the present to it. - Pierre Simon Laplace, A Philosophical Essay on Probabilities. Basically a character analysis of a TARDIS.

Hi Jules 👋 Merry Christmas early! I always love your WHO reactions! This is one of my favorites with the Tardis! ❤ Please forgive me if you've spoken on this already, I didn't see it. Have you chosen to stop your X- Files reactions altogether? I just want to know if I should look forward to a coming reaction or not. I know you got quite overwhelmed trying to balance everything. I understand if you choose not to continue. Your mental and physical health comes first! Either way....❤ Xoxo

Hello 👋💜 Merry early Christmas to you, too! I'm honestly not sure what I'll do with the X Files, to be honest. If only I had more time/the editing didn't take as long. I haven't watched any more because I'm not sure if I'll come back to reactions one day or not, but I still very much want to watch either for myself or here. I'm also thinking about reacting to movies once we are done with our Buffy journey, so there's lots to think about for me. Thank you for asking so nicely and being kind 💜I'm actually doing so much better than I was a while ago. I really think I was just doing too much. It feels like I'm able to do more things away from the computer now. I'm too old to be sat here for 12 hours a day 🤣 so I'm much happier now.

Belated, but thanks for the well wishing of a wonderful day, I wish the same for you in return. Much like the time lord himself, I’m not always exacting when it comes to being on time, there’s great irony for the Doctor in this, for myself I cannot use such excuses. Other than that my timing is often off, I need to go back to comedy school and work at better timing. In any case Jules, thanks as always for an enjoyable re-watch, whenever you find this if indeed you do, once again may you have a grand day or evening.
