The difference between the Doctor and Mee, is basically the TARDIS. The Doctor can and does choose to skip the "boring days" he never lands on a sunday, the TARDIS gives him the whole of time and space to while away his time (is he immortal or just has long multiple lives?) Whereas Mee is forced to not only live through day after day of nothing, she has had to do it in a pre-technology world. The highwayman stuff and other daring-do as she says is simply something to entertain herself with. With the final discussion between Mee and The Doctor explains why she was in the background of Claras picture, Mee has set herself the task of keeping tabs on The Doctor and to do that she is essentially stalking him throughout time. As the Daleks say, how do you get to the Doctor? Through his friends.

Random history from the peanut gallery: The gallows humor was a legitimate thing at the time. A relatively minor criminal could extend their time till death quite a bit by keeping the crowd entertained, even actually turn the crowd to their side which could save their life, as the execution could be called off with enough public support or if an official in the crowd decided to scribble up a pardon.

The Dastardly Penguin I don’t think much of Series 9. I like the acting and cinematography, but that continues onto series 10, plus I much prefer the companion in Series 10, the finale is the best of the Moffat era, the story arc is better and just every story in general is higher quality. Just my opinion though :)

Granted, I haven't seen or read _every_ story about immortals, but as a fan of Science Fiction and Fantasy (and vampires/immortals in particular), this was the first time I recall a story addressing the limitations of memory when it comes to immortality in this way. I quite like that aspect of this story. How *Me* points out that she can't retain it all because she has a normal human brain but an abnormally long life span.

The way he looks at Clara at the end, you know he's seeing her aging and going to dust. I like that they've finally admitted explicitly why the Doctor likes to have companions - that they help anchor him, help him to see the little picture, the joy in life.

My Friday is now complete! This was an interesting concept. The Doctor and another long lived person. The character work is incredible between Me and the Doctor. It isn't often we get to see the Doctor interact with people who are on the same age level. For myself, the B plot was a traditional Doctor Who story. Which was a good counterbalance to the heavy emotional component of the story. It's a solid episode. Maisies youthful look and her acting abilities really raised the story up.
@Payne2view6 жыл бұрын
Another fab reaction and after-talk. I think at this stage, after Clara has been with him for a while, the Dr is going through that "I wonder how long until I have to say goodbye to this one" phase, after experiencing the loss or parting moment with every companion over his long long life. I think we forget he remembers each companion and knows that sooner or later they will leave him. The longer they are with him, the more he must think "this can't last much longer".

What I love about all the two-parters in this season is that they're not all the same kind. Some are a direct continuation, split into parts A and B. And some, like this one, are more like sequels; it's own episode with it's own story, but directly connected to the previous.
@LancerJak6 жыл бұрын
The one thing I do love about Doctor Who, immortality isn't a gift but a curse. Watching everyone around you grow old and die while you stay the same is a cruel torture. This is why the Doctor hates endings, he's seen so many.

Proof of the emotional depth in episodes at this point of Who compared to the earlier new who seasons is how long the review after each episode. season 1: yeah that was ok, too cheesy. Season 9: 5 mins of saying how deep episode goes into certain themes
@MrDylancutter6 жыл бұрын
I think that's because she just became more of a fan and likes to connect with Whovians, not because of the quality of series. As I understand it, she preferred Series 4, 5 and 6 (and possibly Series 3) to Series 8, and I wouldn't be surprised if she continued to prefer those seasons at the end of this season. She doesn't seem very connected to Clara like she was to Donna, Martha and especially the Ponds too.
@jackwarren56086 жыл бұрын
Dylan C oh she’s definitely more connected. And I’m the same, I like Capaldi but the writing in his era did let him down. By emotional depth I meant more with the seriousness of the show. Back in season 1/2 it was very camp and hard to take too seriously but I feel as it went on while the silliness remained it became a bit more self aware. Also Capaldi is a terrific actor so it does help to engage you more. If smith was never there I don’t think she would have the connection but Matt did make her a whovian which has helped to tapp into the emotion
@MrDylancutter6 жыл бұрын
Fair point! The show is definitely more serious and poetic in later seasons, and I reckon she prefers that type of show. I actually really like the camp side of Doctor Who, I found it really fun! When I saw this episode, I didn't feel it was a two parter. I felt like there were two different episodes with a recurring character. Capaldi is a great actor. Without any spoilers, there are episodes where he delivers his lines like the weight of 2,000 years of heavy experiences, including the time war, the loses, the appreciation for life... He became my favorite incarnation of the Doctor because he didn't make it feel like another version of the character, but like the accumulation of all the lives of The Doctor.

I'm someone that thinks it's the worst, I really can't stand it 😂But that's a good thing about Doctor Who, there are so many opinions to be had that there isn't an objectively good or bad story or series, because fans always have divisive opinions :)
@NowhereMan27106 жыл бұрын
I think the difficult of generalising about series quality is that people tend to ignore what is good or bad in each. I understand why people do it, it's an easy label, but to say Series X is 'the best' or 'the worst' is usually just simplification. I've found that in my own experience re-watching things enables you to see more elements that, on broadcast, you ignored and didn't appreciate. (This has especially been the case for the Moffat era.) As a result I wouldn't want to say whether Series 8, 9 or 10 are definitively better - only that each has great moments, and also moments I'm less keen on. (Avoiding detail for obvious reasons).
@finnstewart47476 жыл бұрын
Dylan C I reckon the two parter opener is fantastic, the zygon two parter is great, face the Raven is brilliant too, and of course heaven sent is perfect, so overall it seems like a good season to me, but I definitely get where some people are coming from when they say they don't like it, there were a couple of severe duds.
@MrDylancutter6 жыл бұрын
I like the two part opener, the second half of the Zygon two parter was good, the last 10 minutes or so of Face The Raven was well acted, Heaven Sent is okay (particularly well acted), and Hell Bent is well performed too. It's really just the story and plot of the episodes that lets Series 9 down for me, I think, The cinematography and acting is on point though!

If you feel that these two Ashildir episodes feel different to one another, then that's because this is not officially a two-parter. 'The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar', 'Under the Lake/Before the Flood' and episodes 7 and 8 are the only official two-part stories in this series. Both episode 9 and the S9 Christmas special are completely standalone, while both 'The Girl Who Died and 'The Woman Who Lived' (The Ashildir duology), as well as episodes 10, 11 and 12 (The S9 finale trilogy) are connected but not officially classed as two or tree parters.

The consequences of saving someone isn't always seen, but Season 9 is all about it, being responsible for the ones you save. Ashildir giving the Doctor the scary vibe of acting like a Time Lord, even giving herself a Time Lord name in 'Me'. Me may be crooked, but all she needed was a nudge back in balance, a reminder of why the Doctor does what he does and now what Me can do with her life...though it's not going to be the same route Subtle Captain Jack reference, shame Torchwood hasn't come round to it Your concern for Clara is noted...again

I really enjoyed this 2-parter, particularly because of being a Tennant era fan. Despite how much I enjoyed Matt's portrayal of the Doctor, it was kinda hard for me to adjust to the changes after season 4. I was just really attached to alot of the stuff from the previous seasons, and it felt like it all kind of disappeared (with the exception of River Song & the Angels). But the callbacks they had in these two episodes, the secret of Twelve's face and the Harkness reference, really meant so much to me. Gave me a bit of closure.

Now, what do I think about this episode? It's not bad, but it's not particularly memorable either. It's fine while it's on, but I soon forget about it once it's over. The dialogue between Ashildr/Me and the Doctor is great. The exploration of what it means to live forever and what effect that can have on a person is really good. I think this episode does a good job of showing a morally ambiguous character like Ashildr and how a person like that needs someone to remind them what life's all about. Very much mirroring the Doctor and what his companions mean to him. The sub plot of the lion man, a lot like last week's Odin one- marred the more serious, philosophical tones of this episode. It was silly and unnecessary. It felt forced in just for the sake of having an alien threat. It again felt difficult to buy into some of the more serious stuff. Tonally it was all over the place and I think that's the single biggest failing of these last two episodes. I'm gonna give this one the same score I gave last week. 6/10

hey sess could you do a 260 hour livestream of watching all of classic who in one go?

I think she would need to sleep.

Yeah looking into it I dont think they are doing the entire 260 hours in one go :(. They might be doing season or doctor oriented marathons. In any case it would just be cool if we could see her reaction to all of the classic doctors, maybe get a few references in reverse.

This isn't a "proper" two-parter. Different writers, different location. The Girl Who Died and The Woman Who Lived could have been placed at completely different points in the series and it wouldn't have mattered. It's an awkward two-parter. Doctor Who Magazine, the DVD boxset, and Steven Moffat consider the two episodes to be two separate episodes so that's what it is :)

When you reach Season 10, I think I am gonna start watching with you. I've put it off long enough :)

This episode could have been absolutely perfect were it not for the lion plot. The Doctor and Me talking for 45 mins perhaps over several eras would have made for far better viewing.

I quite like this episode, I know its not the best but I find the plot rather interesting. Its a shame the same can't be said for the majority of Series 9 though. I'm looking forward to seeing what you think to the next two episodes!

This episode would’ve been much better without that unnecessary, badly written villain. The concept of a look into an immortal human’s life was really good, but the weird Lion thing made it a comedy, and caused it to be my least favourite episode of this series! A shame.
@MrDylancutter6 жыл бұрын
It's not that it was a human/cat hybrid (no reference intended), it was just that it was really badly acted and written!

I think that the emotional weight in the front end sort of required a lighter back end to balance it out. There is a lot of serious concepts in the first half.

I think that would be true for something like The Sarah Jane Adventures, but there are plenty of Doctor Who episodes that depict bleak/mature situations without needing to sugar coat it with a comical villain. E.g, Turn Left, The Waters of Mars, countless other episodes. It totally ruined this episode for me, though I may have enjoyed it if I was 8 years old.

I agree. Liked the first half but the lion was a big part of why the second half was worse (and Ashildr being a less sympathetic character).

I got a Beauty and the Beast vibe from it, with the who's who twist.

I didn't like this as much as the first half. Silly lion villain and it feels like a cop out to have Ashildr be immortal but then not Sam Swift. Great reaction though. :) *Edit*: The SHADE thrown at Amy and Rory's departure! :P

The plot is dull. Everything else is gold. Even talentless Rufus Hound, it’s that good.
