A few years ago, I was at a convention for science and space travel. All entirely geared toward actual study, the current direction of space travel, etc. At one point, my friend and I heard what could only have been the TARDIS sound. Excitedly, we followed it to see where it was coming from. We couldn't find anything. Except, there was an empty roped off display stand that would have been the perfect size to hold the TARDIS. Yes we were grown thirty-something year old people. Yes we both had the same fun thought. And, yes, I think we both enjoy keeping that little bit of childhood alive by occasionally thinking "what if?"

I really think how you view this show and what you see as the actual story greatly changes how you view individual episodes. If you are watching this show as a purely sci fi show and looking at it in those regards you could gloss over this episode. For me the show is about The Doctor and his journeys (as a character as much as his journey through time). it is for that reason I really like episodes like this that give us such great moments where The Doctor comes to face the consequences of his choices. The Moffat era with Capaldi is my absolute favorite of the show (graned I am a "new Whovian" who is still going through the original).
@chiffon7883 жыл бұрын
@@kellyliles9273 very well put. The Moffat era excelled at turning what would be average Monster of the Week stories into key moments in the Doctor and his companion's journeys. I think it's most apparent when comparing RTD's Christmas specials with Moffat's. RTD's are Doctor Who stories set at Christmas with a bit of festive flair, while Moffat's all feature the Doctor learning (or teaching) lessons about family and togetherness.

The Doctor travelling with another immortal (or Time Lord) can potentially be toxic, but there is one exception: Romana. As a companion, Romana lasted nearly three seasons (and had one regeneration), but it was also more of a kind of master/apprentice type of relationship. She was the Doctor's intellectual equal, but still had some naivete.

Had forgotten last week's and this week's episodes were one right after the other. Believed there were several episodes in between before we saw Ashildr again. Obviously,I was mistaken and was thinking of...something else. Kept getting her name wrong too. Thought they were saying La Shield Ah. Darn British accents! The Doctor believed she would give someone else immortality and did not compensate for her becoming hard and arrogant -sound familiar? - and thinking no one was good enough for such a gift/curse. well that's the thing with immortality, he could have let her anywhere in time and it still would have been the long way around for her. We are seeing it from our time but who is to say that in Doctor Who's universe the 2200s or the 3000s are even worst than what she had to live, if it's a part of life then, if she lives forever, she will live it forever.

I like Sam Swift, he is well played by Rufus Hound, Ashildr has a good character twist, which I briefly mentioned last time as having being ruined due to a trailer which was on the Official Doctor Who KZbin channel which both of you, Paula especially, needs to avoid like the plague as it has both Classic and New Who clips any way in the trailer it showed Ashildr in this episode so when I saw her in The Girl Who Died, I put two and two together and guessed the whole immortal thing within the first 5 minutes of seeing Ashildr. There was a theory at the time that she may of been a regenerated Susan, which I was on board with as long as Carol Ann Ford came back for the regeneration scene and maybe a bit more, perhaps as a cold open thing but as we would all then The Girl Who Died aired and so when at the end of The Girl Who Died, it turned out I was right, that theory was put to rest.

I doubt they really know what to do with Ashildir. Who is great at creating amazing characters but not following through with them. Hello Doctor's Daughter.

Well, it had to happen eventually. Having seen what writer Catherine Tregenna (the first female writer to work on the show since 2008) did for the early seasons of Torchwood, this episode is a massive disappointment. I get what the story was going for, it was supposed to be a moody, quiet and introspective exploration of immortality and the negative impact of the Doctor's actions, and for what it's worth a lot of the dialogue between the Doctor and Ashildr is really well written and poetic. I especially love the final scene between them, in which they reach a kind of understanding and the Doctor stresses the importance of sharing experiences with the shorter-lived "mayflies", a monologue which I thought was really lovely and poignant. Both the lead actors give excellent performances too, with Maisie Williams getting a lot more to work with this time around and absolutely acing it, although there are points where she suffers from what I call "Anakin Skywalker syndrome", wherein I feel she comes across as overly whiny and unsympathetic. What really sinks this episode for me is the weird tonal shifts. It's likely a side-effect of Tregenna being more used to a darker and more serious drama, and feeling unsure of how to adapt her writing for a show with a more family-oriented demographic. The end result is that the moody and emotional drama keeps getting undermined by weird out-of-place comedy bits and slapstick routines, complete with over-the-top editing, broad comic performances (though I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy Rufus Hound as Sam Swift), and yet another jaunty "LAUGH NOW DAMMIT" soundtrack from Murray Gold. And then we get the elephant in the room...or rather the lion. What the hell is the point of Leandro? He's got to be the most unnecessary and superfluous villain in the history of the show, and his presence actively detracts from the story, turning the third act into a rushed and underwhelming alien invasion story. It's like if Tregenna wrote Torchwood's "Out of Time" and was like "hmm, I know what this script is missing - a giant squirrel monster!" "The Woman Who Lived" isn't the worst episode ever; hell it's not even the worst of Capaldi's era - that's still to come unfortunately. It is however, the most disappointing and full of missed potential. There's some decent compelling character drama here, but it's all undercut by some unnecessary goofy comedic sequences and one of the worst villains in the show's history. To tell you the Truth though, on the plus side, next week will be more interesting, and perhaps there'll some more exploration of earlier stories and their Consequences...
@TheQuietReader19203 жыл бұрын
What a brilliant comment, I really enjoyed your points about Ms Tregenna's other works! You're right though, this is an episode of two sides; a beautiful, poignant story of immortality and a poorly developed, monster-of-the-week run around. I'm on the camp of disliking Leandro, as he feels like a pantomime villain better suited to a more goofy episode. On the whole, I really love the good stuff in this story, I just wished it wasn't undermined continually by its wackier elements
