He wrapped my father in unbreakable chains, forged in the heart of a dwarf star. He tripped my mother into the event horizon of a collapsing galaxy to be imprisoned there... forever. He still visits my sister... once a year, every year... I wonder if one day he might forgive her, but there she is, can you see her? He trapped her inside a mirror... EVERY mirror. If ever you look at your reflection and see something move behind you, just for a second... That's her... that's ALWAYS her. As for me, I was suspended in time and the Doctor put me to work, standing over the fields of England... as their protector. We wanted to live forever, so the Doctor made sure that we did.

The part I always felt they missed with the "Time Lord Victorious" was that Adelaide ends up dying on Earth. Before, she got to be a hero who died in an unknown expedition to Mars - a figure to be looked up to. Instead, she was someone who was found dead by her own hand, in her home on Earth, when she was supposed to be leading an expedition on Mars. Being that Earth had non TARDIS-like transports, he only conclusion people could have come to was that she never left Earth and ended up killing herself for whatever personal reason. She would have died seen as a failure rather than a hero. The Doctor's last vision of Adelaide should have been how she inspired no-one and a completely new person led humanity into the stars, instead of her granddaughter. The Doctor needed to see the total failure of the Time Lord Victorious that seemed obvious to anyone who considered the importance of Adelaide's death being ON MARS and not simply that she died. He should have done more than crush one woman, but totally destroyed her legacy and that of her family's legacy. Then let him stew on that and that he can never undo it.

He lost his temper there for a second, but when he slipped back into the calm fury it showed just how much control he has over his emotions. People who can hold their anger longer than anybody else are scary. But people who get calm when they're angry, those are the people to run from. That's why I preferred the tenth doctor, because he was the one to get quiet when angry.

The Doctor is a person who would love to live by values, but knows full well that, if need be, all their values will go out the window. The 11th Doctor was never "the man who forgets" - he was the man who denies. He remembers the Doctor of War - and he knows what that man means for him.
@woodrobin

When I was younger, I was a very angry person. I knew people who were pacifists because they believed in peace, or were naturally calm, or were not in any way comfortable with the idea of hurting someone. I was a pacifist because I yearned to take my anger out on anyone who provoked me, was constantly seething under the surface, and was *utterly* comfortable with the idea of hurting someone -- but I didn't *want* to be any of those things. I made myself a hard and fast rule that I would never strike or harm someone unless they managed to strike me first, hard enough to cause me real pain. I actually let people hit me without hitting them back, because they couldn't hit me hard enough to draw blood or cause real pain, because I was afraid of what would happen if I gave in to the urge to hit back -- afraid that once I started letting it out, I wouldn't be able to stop -- or worse, wouldn't want to stop. Thankfully, the years have taught me that the people I was angry at weren't worth carrying that around, and let a lot of it go, but I definitely agree with the idea that it's not good men who need rules to keep them from doing terrible things. It's the people who aren't good but *want to be* that forge links of rules to chain down what they're afraid of becoming. So, I really felt that scene, but that "Oh, look, I'm angry . . . that's never happened before" did strike me as a bit of self-deception. He's definitely been angry before, but he's always buried it under a sense of justice ("Here was the fury of a Timelord"), or directed it at something nebulous or conceptual ("I AM THE TIMELORD VICTORIOUS!"). This is the first time he's *admitted to himself* that he really, truly wants to take his anger out on a specific, mortal target despite knowing there's not a damned thing Colonel Runaway could do to stop him. That's why he's entirely honest when he says he doesn't know what happens next: he's never let himself feel that kind of specific, human sort of anger before.

But just because he put on a happy face doesn't mean he's happier. Eleven tried to suppress all his emotions and past experiences and his comedic antics and what not were his way of doing it. Just like with 9 and 10 there were moments of happiness seeped in with moments of great pain. Also we never really see 11 alone like we do with 10. Now I like 11 a lot more than 10 but I imagine if we ever got a few episode of 11 just by himself we would really get to see the great pain that he is still harboring and can't escape from no matter how hard he tries.

Oh it predeates the War Doctor, by along way, The First Doctor, newly escaped from gallifrey and travelling for the first time with humnas is in 'An Unearthly child' seemingly entirely willing to kill an incapacitated man with a rock... He's only stopped because Ian refuses to let him do it. Everyone of the Doctors have had their moments: some have played games with the lives of people to save hole worlds, some have casually reverse pickpocketed grenades that their enemies set for others, reprogrammed weapons to strike the homeworld of the people who fired them. And thats before he tangles with the Daleks, before he is driven to the edge by the Two time wars. The Doctor and the Master aren't opposites, they're closer than one might think... the master is what the Doctor might be if he didn't surround himself with companions, didn't puff himself up as the dandy and the clown. Didn't try to stick to those rules, those rules a good man would never need to even think about....

He has his goofy moments but when he's being serious and angry, he's dangerous to his enemies. I love Matt's Doctor so much!! I even see Matt's Doctor as he plays Daemon Targaryen. The easy way he intimidated Aemond One-Eye without saying a word. Matt is so terribly underrated. He's excellent in everything he does!

I think they were two opposing approaches for the same character, Tennant's Doctor being more relentless and overall sad and fearful, specially in his final moments. Matt's Doctor on the other hand is always with a happier than ever facade that masks boiling anger, ego and resentment.

1:20 It's 30 seconds, but it tells an entire story in so much time. The way Matt's face is only half-lit as he turns to face Madame Kovarian. Then, in the next shot as he approaches her, we can see the shadows have receded only partially. He's containing the beast as best he can, but even he has his limits. The controlled fury of his tone, how he searches Madame Kovarian's expression as if to ask "well, do you really want to play this game?" When she yields only a few seconds later, the shadows are still there for a second as Matt wiggles his finger at her, before he turns away and is once more embraced by the light. For now, the beast has receded, but it's very clear that The Doctor can awaken it at the drop of a hat.

I LOVE this side of Eleven! He can be adorable and harmless looking to downright scary. Matt was awesome. I love when he turned to look at the woman half of his face was shrouded in darkness. He can look chilling when he wants to. I like how you can hear the anger building throughout this scene. When addressing the Colonel, it started out almost playful, albeit stilted, to anger, then downright rage. Then it showed him trying to rein it in and regain control which was somehow scarier. He was on the verge of snapping. When talking to the woman; it was icy, cold and calculating. That's why Eleven is my favorite. He had so many layers. A lot of depth. He was more than a silly guy in a bowtie.

Perfectly represents who the doctor is and what he is at that moment. You're only seeing one side. A side that still has the light. But the other is just a void.

The thing about the 11th Doctor in this scene that I relate to most is his temper. He is the "Dangerously calm" pissed off. So furious yet so calm which is the worst kind of furious because you just don't know what they will do. A visibly violent angry person you know will throw the hands right there. People who straight off yell in anger you know whats going to happen. But that calm, reserved pissed is the most unpredictable because how tempered they seem. And with 11, He starts off calm but it slowly starts to crack until he raises his voice, Then settles. Its that kind of anger that is most volatile. Its the kind of anger I am familiar with because that's how I am. Calm, reserved and balanced when angry. But slowly it cracks and shows more and my control slips off and there's no real knowing what I'll do. I love 11ths portrayal of that type of anger.

You know something it just hit me all these years later. A lot of people take this as a glimpse at what the Doctor could be and how dangerous he could be but they are wrong. It’s actually showing exactly how dangerous he is and how cruel he is outright. The Doctor could wipe out an entire galaxy if he felt like it that’s no surprise to anyone. But here the Doctor shows something else. The “Colonel Runaway” isn’t just a reminder of a failure or some joke. The Doctor is showing that no matter what happens, no matter how many soldiers and no matter what weapons you may have you cannot beat him. Could he kill them all? Sure! But they pissed him off and he doesn’t just want them to die he wants them to suffer. To be humiliated and mocked for the rest of time, because even after they die they will always have the legacy of “run away.” The Doctor isn’t just winning at this point, he is forever holding his victory over your head, demolishing you life, career and reputation and essentially saying to your face “You can’t stop me.”

you know, I never noticed that Vastra hisses when The Doctor starts shouting. That's such a cool detail because I see it as her reminding the Doctor to 'calm down'. You sometimes forget that behind the quirky, funny man is a time lord that's commited multiple genocides, subjected various entities to eternal torment, and fought in one of the most devastating, most gruesome wars of all time. The Doctor knows just how to make one suffer if he really wants to and *that* is truly scary.
