A Good Man Goes To War is easily one of the best episodes of this season. It has a dark theme, we get a look at other characters the Doctor has met off-screen, and just when you think the day is safe, Kovarian pulls a "LOL, NOPE!" and the Doctor is defeated. This episode also acts as an inside look into the character of the Doctor, and the fact that after millions of adventures and defeating countless monsters, he's gone from a stubborn scientist running through time and space to something much darker and more powerful.

I remember when I was first watching this episode, I was so hoping that the solider girl would be revealed to be Jenny, the Doctor's daughter from the 10th's run. We'd seen regeneration energy crop up a few times by this point, sometimes without changing a timelord's appearance, sometimes changing it a little while after the first blast. I'd been hoping that Jenny's appearance would have changed sometime after she flew off in that ship back in the day, and she'd been trying to find her way back to the Doctor ever since. But, given that the Doctor has enemies here and there, she learned not to outright say that she was his daughter. And then when she finally saw him again, she couldn't tell him.

My biggest problem with River Song is that she can regenerate. Both of her parents are human. There's absolutely no way she could have a Time Lords' most powerful ability even if she was conceived in the Time Vortex. At most, she'd just have a slightly longer lifespan and a better perception of time than a normal person. Honestly, giving River the ability to regenerate was completely pointless anyway. Her timeline is so out of sync that she could still have had that friendship with Amy and Rory, jumped forwards a couple of decades whilst looking for the Doctor, and then come back as Alex Kingston without shoving in something totally unbelievable.

Actually did some additional scrolling here, and thanks to some lovely people near the beginning of the comments I found the track, or well there’s two unreleased versions. 😅 I wasn’t sure if you ever found it a few months ago, so I wanted to help out too! It’s derived from this version from the “Don’t” moment in an episode from Tennant’s era: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4SwhJ5vZ5mGisU

“A good man goes to war” is more like “The Empire Strikes Back” from the world of Doctor Who. "Impossible Astronaut" and "Day of the Moon" are "A New Hope" and "Wedding of River Song" is Return of the Jedi" And what "Let's Kill Hitler" is, I don't know. And if you compare with the films about the Avengers, then “A Good Man Goes to War” is more like “Infinity War” "Impossible Astronaut" and "Day of the Moon"-"Avengers" and "Age of Ultron". "Wedding of River Song" -"Endgame".

Stolen Earth/Journey's End was a better Endgame than this. AGMGTW is good, but it's surrounded by so much mediocrity and bad.

Honestly. Rory's combat ability is so damn high. Shame he never got to hang out with Jack. I think having an Uncle Jack the Immortal would've beem amazing for River and Doctor. also it would've had some interesting connotations with his kind of lore with the headless monnks.. they would have been made aware of him here. and the potential for him to have lost his time machine here.

they actually wanted to put him in this episode, but the actor was busy filming "miracle day"

I’m convinced that scene with the pirate captain was originally written for Jack - he bursts onto the screen in a major surprise, cocks his gun and says “Captain Jack Harkness, and who are you?”

FACT: Did you know that originally, Steven Moffat wrote Captain Jack to be in this episode? But unfortunately John Barrowman was too busy with filming Torchwood. Would have been interesting to see Capt. Jack with Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor.

Rory started this sequence with a roman gladius and a pistol. He ended it with one of the headless monk's swords. Imagine that scene.
