The Keys of Marinus - it's an epic and really feels like it's 6 mini stories packed in. Also it's full of adventure that none of the adventurers actually want to be in, they all want to return to the TARDIS and leave. The Rescue and The Romans - Packaged together on VHS and because of that I think of them always being together. I love in the Rescue it shows illustrates the Doctor having had unseen adventures before Babs and Ian joined them. I agree with you on The War Machines and The Time Meddler. The Daleks' Master Plan seems like it should be a season all on its own like the Key to Time, it's epic in ways that we don't ever see again except maybe during the Moff years of the interconnected story arcs. Honourable mentions: the other Dalek stories; Daleks. Invasion and Chase. They've all got flaws, mostly from padding, but all have epic senses of scale, coverage and contribution to the universe.

My absolute favourite is "The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve". Hartnell gets to play the bad guy (and play him well). Steven absolutely shines as he carries this story. The themes of religious persecution and politics are not dumbed-down for the audience and the guest characters (and actors) are absolutely brilliant. The icing on the cake is the Doctor's speech to himself when he's finally alone in the TARDIS.
@immoral_q5 жыл бұрын
The Time Meddler is wonderful. I'm surprised my DVD isn't worn out from all the re-watching. Its such a shame we couldn't get Marco Polo in colour because those costumes were gorgeous, and it would have been nice to see them in all their glory. I'm hard pressed to pick my favourite stories because, just like every incarnation of the Doctor, they all have great moments. If I had to choose, I think: 1. The Time Meddler 2. The Dalek Invasion of Earth 3. The Savages (where's my animation of this, BBC? C'mon, get your bloody act together!) 4. The Tenth Planet 5. The Celestial Toymaker 6. The War Machines
@dominiccarter66255 жыл бұрын
Great choices, glad to see Marco Polo getting some much-deserved appreciation - it's the story I'd most like to see returned. My favourite first Doctor story is The Daleks. Sure, it's not perfect, but it's the perfect way to establish the Daleks, and it ensured the future of the programme.

Plus, Master plan features the Brigadier before he was the Brigadier. Yes, Nicolas Courtney was in a First Doctor story. If we do ever get a recovery or animation, it would have to be like Gone With the Wind, the Invasion or the War Games. Split in half over two discs.

Another fantastic video Josh!! To be honest Hartnell ranks somewhere in the middle for me as "best doctor"..but there are some stellar stories. My top 5: #5- The Gun fighters - I have to agree with you about this one...it's silly but it's comedy moments make want to watch this one over and over again. Plus Steven and Dodo playing that song is enough to make me burst out laughing. 4. The Space Museum - Overall this isn't that great a story...but I feel that episode 1 is possibly the greatest episode of any Doctor Who story..the cliff hanger is brilliant. .too bad the rest of the story isn't as strong. #3 - The Keys of Marinas - number 3 was a toss up between Marco Polo and this story...but the reason I like this one better is because the way the story is written. ..it's like you get 4 separate story adventures in one ..while I believe Marco Polo is fantastic and is the one story I'd love to see found again. ..Keys keeps my attention through the whole story. #2 - The Dalek Invasion of Earth- This is classic Who..the Doctor vs the Daleks. .what more could you want...plus the departure of Susan is heart breaking. ..and has always left a question in my head...when will they finally write a new Doctor Who story where he/she returns to Earth to visit Susan...after all he says he will return. #1 - The Daleks - The introductory story of the Daleks has always been my favorite story from the Hartnell era...so many things happening here. ..the introduction of the Thalls. .you get Hartnell's first showing of his greedy side as he lies about the mercury switch...Barbra and Ian are still bitter about being kidnapped. ..all this within a brilliant Daleks story. Oh and by the way my favorite Doctor is #2 .

Daleks' Masterplan is brilliant. The story does meander and it is slightly uneven, but the concept, acting, direction...its just brilliant. The Daleks are the most ruthless they had ever been, along with great voice modulation and even having sinister, sneaky personalities. The delegates each having their own unique alien qualities (remember when they were clapping backwards, and Chen's long fingers and odd writing style). Its attention to detail the show had never seen before. The stakes were so high and the cost of winning was heartbreaking. I'm sure the Time Destructor was responsible for that Doctor's body wearing a bit thin. It was a very dark era in the story terms

Some great choices there! I am encouraged to watch some of these serials again very soon. Love The War Machines - agree there should have been more contemporary Hartnell tales - this has the feel of Adam Adamant Lives about it. The Time Meddler has been a favourite of mine since I first saw it in 1992 when BBC2 began the first major repeat season of Who since 1984. The Romans is a sublime piece of TV. The joke about the fridge is a classic. Did you upgrade your choice of The Gunfighters? You give it a place on the list and then say it gets an honourable mention? You make a very convincing argument for each story and your obvious love of the First Doctor shines through. Great video, Josh!

The Time Meddler (#3 - Great fun, great villain, great cast, great ending, it is fantastic. I love the addition of Steven from the previous story, and he already works well with Hartnell. This is a fantastic TARDIS team and it is a shame that we don't have much of their stories in the archive) The Rescue (#4 - I love this story. I love it a lot. I love the costume design on the villain of the story, still freaky to this day. Vicki is just fantastic and it's a great opener for the new TARDIS team. That scene where the Doctor asks Susan to open the door is heartbreaking) The Chase (#5 - 60's Who boiled down into the most fun adventure that they could ever have. I can remember on Twitter, someone who had done the animation for 'The Macra Terror' had put up a chart of what they look for when they want to animate a lost episode or story. The main one is how many characters are in it, and if it's over a certain amount, the BBC won't do it. So unfortunately, that means 'Marco Polo' and 'The Daleks' Master Plan' won't get the animation treatment.

Nice list! Hartnell really had a lot of great stories, though I still think the Wotan says "Doctor Who is required" because of a linguistic bug in the programming. In programming, sometimes filling voice commands requires a name string, but since "Doctor" is probably identified as a string for profession and there is no known name to complete the sentence, they just fill it with a "Who" string instead of a null value to avoid errors. The technology is ahead of its time, but still in a primitive stage. And yes, I nerded out again over Who facts... sorry about that. P.S: Gunfighters is also a bold choice. And talking about cult following episodes that aren't the usual fan favourites, I actually love the Web Planet - recognizible creatures, magical cinematic alien landscape, a great mystery with creepy vibes, an ambitious project about an alien dystopia. The story may not have a lot of relatable elements or crazy twists but it's also as Doctor Who as it can get. One day, I would love to see those aliens redesigned.

Ah, Hartnell's a favourite of mine too. There really hasn't been a Doctor like him since. Even the oldest actor to portray the Doctor, Peter Capaldi, didn't give in anyway similar performance.

Don't worry Josh, you're not alone about The Gunfighters. It is one of my top 3 'Favorite Surviving Hartnell Stories' Serials. Basically for the same reasons you listed, but it was just so fun. With rings on its fingers, and bells on its toes, of course:-)

@@JoshSnares indeed! Also, if I had to make a list of my top 6 favorite Hartnell stories, I have unfortunately haven't seen an existing story for a while (the last one I saw, from what I remember, was The Edge Of Destruction), so it will have to be a top 6 favorite Hartnell stories that are missing. So anyways: #6: The Myth Makers Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy some of the stuff in here, despite it being at sixth place. It is pretty funny. Some of Paris's lines are great, we have surviving footage of all the episodes, and the place they picked for it (the Battle of Troy. It is an extremely popular event in history). But if I had to list one thing that brought it down, I would have to list The ending, because it is very out of character for Vicki. #5: The Celestial Toymaker Is it bad to say that I mildly enjoyed this one? This story was originally far lower in my rankings, but I've begun enjoying it after each rewatch. It's so surreal, yet so amazing...if only 'that' scene in Hall of Dolls was changes slightly (you probably know what scene I'm talking about)... #4: The Reign Of Terror Yep. Shoot me. Just kidding. I don't know what it is, but I like the historicals in Doctor Who, especially the Season 1 and 3 historicals. The conflict in the entire thing is extremely good, we have a large portion of the episodes existing, episodes 4 and 5 are a thing (I enjoyed those episodes especially), and, unlike other people, I really can't see the subplots. Quick note; all of the episodes are on KZbin! They were uploaded by a user named Doc Who, and a quick KZbin search will yield good results. #3: Mission to The Unknown I love this story. I know it's more of a prequel than an episode, but I liked it. This might be because I was one of the many people to watch the unofficial animation on KZbin before the BBC took it down. I enjoyed the plotline, and the fact that the Daleks win...just wow. #2: The Massacre I had hoped I didn't have to explain this. Oh well. This story is really good. Historical by John Lucarotti (his are really good), Episode 4, Steven, The Doctor's speech in episode 4, and I'm just gonna trail off so all my reasons for liking this serial so much don't stem off from Bell of Doom (episode 4). The place they picked for the historical, the lack of visual material whatsoever other than promotional photos and the audio for all 4 episodes, and it introduces...well, we knew it was going to happen. #1: The Daleks' Master Plan And that's my list. Pretty long, but I wanted to explain the reasons I loved the serials so much. Updated list to reflect my updated ratings.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who thinks Hartnell remains the best Doctor even after more than half a decade after his regeneration. Everyone seems to share the opinion that Troughton made the show better and that the new Doctors are overall the best. My favorite Hartnell stories are: 6. The Time Meddler - our first meeting with another Time Lord. 5. The Daleks - a great introduction to the now iconic villains and we get to see how curiosity almost killed the cat when The Doctor puts at risk not only his life, but also those of his compnions. 4. The Daleks' Invasion on Earth - a sheer epic that ends with the heartbreaking goodbye between The Doctor and susan. I'd really like to see Carole Ann Ford get visited by Jodie Whittaker - not only will The Doctor finally keep his promise to come back, but it would also be hilarious to have an octogenerian woman call another woman in her late 30s "Grandfather". 3. The Tenth Planet - I'm rather annoyed by the way the Cybermen speak in this story, but this is their first appearance and it really delivers. Not to mention the regeneration scene at the very end which must have been very unexpected for the viewers. 2. The Chase - I'm a fan of everything related to the Daleks and this story is unique due to the fact that it isn't confined by one particular planet or time, but it takes us to many different places. 1. The Unaired Pilot - I really think that it turned out better and creepier than the remake they actualy aired, but the kids would've been scarred for life if it had made the air. This is honestly one of the best and most compelling first episodes ever made. It gives you just enough information to hook you up.

I really enjoyed this one. Our reaction to any episode of the series is completely subjective which you can see by scrolling through the comments and seeing which episodes are mentioned most and in some cases, not at all! My six are all based on the fact that I'm a historian or because of a particular performance I've enjoyed. In chronological order...1. Marco Polo - such a shame it doesn't exist, it looks an opulent, beautifully designed production and the CDs give an excellent sense of the overall scale of the narrative. Mark Eden is superb and Hartnell and Khan griping over their aches and pains is a delightful moment.2. The Aztecs - a great guest cast, with a scenery chewing tour-de-force by John Ringham. He rants, he declaims like Olivier, he even breaks the Fourth Wall but he's the only villain in the history of the series who wins. Despite her best efforts, Barabara changes nothing and the Aztecs will have their blood. Ian, Ixta and that "heavy" stone though...3. The Romans - a great way to ease a new companion into the series and there is plenty of action, from a terrible fight scene between Hartnell and an assassin to Barbara being chased by Nero in what looks like a scene from Scooby Doo! Plus, I'm also pretty sure that Ian and Barbara get a bit naughty at the villa whilst under the influence of some fine wine...OH MY!!4.The Crusade - Julian Glover, Jean Marsh and Bernard Kay lead an amazing guest cast, with another memorable villain as played by Walter Randall. Once again, the regulars all get some time to shine, with Hartnell and Hill being especially fine. The production is lovely to look at and there is a real sense that everyone knew this was going to be something special.5. The Web Planet - O.K. My guilty pleasure, just like the Pet Shop Boys CDs hidden behind the bust of Beethoven. It's insane, nothing makes sense, the acting is vile, Richard Martin put Vaseline on the camera lens because, well he just didn't care about Doctor Who and when it all comes down to it, you can't top...ZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARBI!!!5.The Myth Makers - It might just be even funnier than the Romans and then, everyone dies. It's written like a stage play and it still works. Max Adrian, Frances de Wolff and Barrie Ingham ("You can't say whoa to the Horse" is a riot!) are all wonderful but sadly, Vicki's departure is the first of many half-hearted farewells to companions who just didn't want to be there anymore. Favourite Troughton stories coming up next?

A lot of people seem to fixate on Hartnell being this old and cranky version of The Doctor, but a lot of my favourite moments of the 1st Doctor are when he was being cheeky and childish. People seem to forget how funny he could be. I always loved it when one of the companions came up with the idea to save the day, only for The Doctor to turn around and say "yes, I'm glad I thought of that". Fans who perhaps never really watched the classic series probably have a view of him similar to that of "Twice Upon A Time" which is so wrong. He could be grumpy, but he was more often than not the mischievous grandfather figure going on wild adventures.

For me, The War Machines is the best, but to be fair, I never watched Daleks' Masterplan. Hopefully I'll be able to one day. The Time Meddler is a close second for me, while The Sensorites (underrated!) is the third. The First Doctor is my favourite as well, take five! ✋🏼
