The reconstruction instead of animation is a big let down. I am just guessing, but I think the reason BBC America pulled out of funding the animations is because the ratings in America fell off the cliff. AMC Networks is part owner of BBC America, and no matter how hard they pushed the new show, the ratings never bounced back. That in turn lowered interest in the animations, and they were not getting their return on investment. RTD needs to turn around the new show or funding for releases of the classic show will eventually dry up.

Don’t forget, though, even if we did have the original studio tapes, that wouldn’t be much help for a 5.1 surround sound track, as the music and sound FX were still played into the studio under all the dialogue (which is why you sometimes get them misplaced/miscued, especially near complicated scene change points). (That being said, the Tristram Cary-scored stories could still have the music elements done more easily than the others, as he did keep almost all his tapes.) TL;DR The dialogue literally could never be available separately from the music and sound FX as they’re both baked into the same audio track.

@@DemetriusSorvo That’s not quite what I meant, though. We’ve had 5.1 audio tracks for stories where only the broadcast soundtrack and sound effects survive already (The Deadly Assassin being the one that springs to mind). When it was announced, despite my excitement I did get the feeling that something was missing and I feel like this video really helps identify why. I'm happy with that is on it though and in my opinion Season 2 is the peak of William Hartnell's era, if not the whole of Doctor Who in the 60s, so I'm looking forward to it. Something I've only started to appreciate recently on these sets are the pieces of convention footage, so seeing Adrienne Hill and Michael Craze will appear in this set's convention footage made me more excited than it probably should've. I feel like they're about as close as you get to "forgotten" actors involved with the show (within the main cast), so any spotlight on them is great.

An analysis of the next 60's Collection Box Set to be released. Season 5 will have only 4 missing episodes after The Abominable Snowmen animation is released, Episodes 1, 2, 4 & 5 of The Wheel in Space. Episode 1 was half animated, and can be seen on The Macra Terror special features. This would be the next logical release for the collection and Troughton's first. However if animation was to resume The Wheel in Space would be the next obvious choice. It being a popular story, a companion introduction and a Cyberman story, plus some assets from the already started animation. So possibly this will wait. Season 6 has only 5 episodes missing. Episodes 1 & 3-6 of The Space Pirates. But as this is not a popular story it was unlikely to be animated anytime soon even if the animation funding continued. Therefore I think this would be more likely next release. Plus it also has the most amount of original surviving episodes after Season 2, only missing 7 in total. Season 1 will be the next Hartnell release, no surprise there. It is only missing the 7 Episodes of Marco Polo. This could well be released next year for the 60th anniversary with a good reconstruction. However, Marco Polo appears to be the story for which missing episodes are likely to show up. This is due to the fact of so many copies made for international transmission. It is known that at least 6 missing episodes exist in private collections (as Philip Morris has said). Likely at least one of these is a Marco Polo episode, if not more. So possibly the BBC know of these and are awaiting a possible return. If this were not the case then Marco Polo would also be a likely candidate for animation should these resume. However, even if these are not returned or animated, Season 1 is likely not far behind, as after Season 2 and 6 it has the least amount of missing episodes, with 9. Season 4 would logically come after, as it is still missing 10 unanimated missing episodes. However these are not popular or well known episodes, being all 4 parts of The Smugglers, all 4 parts of The Highlanders, and episodes 1 & 4 of The Underwater Menace. None of these seem likely to have been animated even if this had continued at the current pace. Possibly The Highlanders however, as this was Jamie's introduction (and it is actually a good story too) but a pure historical (other than Marco Polo) is unlikely to attract much attention or demand sadly. Therefore I could see this season released as is, with its 10 unanimated missing episodes. (However this was a highly incomplete season with 33 of the 43 episodes missing. It is also the only season with not one complete story, so possibly they will not release such a animation heavy Season so soon, same could be said for Season 5, but to a lesser extent). Season 3 is by far the most incomplete season and likely to be the very last Collection Box Set released (unless they move to the Modern Series). It is missing 28 episodes, less than Season 4, but only Galaxy 4 has been animated. It is also unclear if the UCLAN remake of Mission to the Unknown could be included. However, taking that both of these are included then this season is still short 24 Episodes. Many of which have very little surviving material to even make decent telesnap reconstructions such as The Myth Makers and The Massacre (though both of these work great as soundtracks, I highly recommend The Myth Makers vinyl). Season 3 does however have a number of original complete stories, unlike Season 4. These are The Ark, The Gunfighters and The War Machines. The remaining stories would all be good and popular releases for animation, indeed I would not have expected Galaxy 4 before any of the others (bar The Savages). However with the uncertain future of Doctor Who animation it is unlikely that any of these would be top priority. I still doubt that they would release A Collection Box Set of Season 3 in it's current state however, and likely only would if there was no more animations/recoveries when this is the last set remaining. TLDR; To summarize, I believe the next likely release order for the 60's collection sets is: Season 6 Season 1 Season 5 Season 4 Season 3 Season 1 I do believe is likely for next year, but I do think a Troughton set will be released before another Hartnell. As with the leaks therefore I believe that the next 3 collection sets will be Season 20, Season 6, and Season 1. Remind me in December 2023 and see if I was correct.

Nice analysis, but one thing jumped out at me when you said "(unless they move to the Modern Series)" Do you think this is possible? While my steelbook sets are great, I'd very much like to see the new series get The Collection treatment and have it match the rest of the set rather than feeling like a separate thing.
@ciaranwhitehead39062 жыл бұрын
@@JRCSalter I'm pretty sure they mentioned it is a possibility. Especially for the first 4 Series which were not broadcast in HD and even the Blu-rays out now are not the best masters. I would be very happy to see them, especially for the Behind the Sofa segments, which are by far the best features on these sets. A Series 1/Season 27 could be great for 2025.

I kinda hope that not just DIOE gets enhanced sound. What would be great is maybe a 2.1 mix, so it’d be stereo plus the sub channel, so it’d give the episodes some low frequency emphasis without a whole 5.1 mix. But also acknowledge that even finding a place in a stereo mix from the limited audio that exists might be tricky / pricey to do.

I’m interested in this new Sound Mix for Dalek Invasion of Earth. Destiny was advertised to have something similar in the Season 17 Set and what they did for that was added new/more SFX & also added Tristram Cary’s original 1963 score for The Daleks to the story (along with Dudley Simpson’s original score for the story). What I think they’ll do (because Francis Chagrin’s score for The Dalek Invasion of Earth was so minimal & hardly there) is that they’ll do the same for The Dalek Invasion of Earth, which I approve as not only would that story benefit from a more creepy & fulfilling score but also Cary’s score for The Daleks is just really really good!

13:04 - I find Telesnap reconstructions essentially knock 2-4 marks out of 10 off my enjoyment of a story if it’s more than about 1/3 of the story missing. Don’t get me wrong, I can still get the gist, but I find it hard to be invested. Take Evil of the Daleks. I did not get the fuss - and bear in mind, Troughton is my favourite Doctor - and thought it was alright. Then I saw the animation. Power is still my favourite Troughton Dalek story (one where I first watched the animation) but it’s a much much closer race than it used to be. Telesnap reconstructions are valuable but they are hard to watch sometimes.

Yeah, I’m much the same. Patrick pretty much landed as my least favourite Doctor by default simply because so little of his era survives to be watched. That being said, William is slowly replacing him now due to just how many PT-era animations we’ve been getting over the last few years. It’s Season 3 that’s the main issue now: We only have four intact stories from that entire run (Galaxy 4 [animated], The Ark, The Gunfighters and The War Machines), and there are so many cast/crew changes during that gap that it’s almost a completely different show once we can rejoin it. 😫

I was honestly expecting The Crusade to not even be telesnaps but be the audio recordings used on the 1999 VHS release and the Lost in Time DVD which I would have completely understood. I’m also glad that despite being 9 stories we are getting a full in conversation with William Russell and full Behind the Sofa installments with Peter Purves, Carole Ann Ford, and Maureen O’Brien. I’m also okay with the black and white episodes not having a lot of new scans especially since they’re film recordings of videotape and probably isn’t as much they can do from a new scan than what they could do from the DVD scans, especially since the jump from VHS to DVD was already large jumps in quality for Doctor Who (especially pre 1976 Doctor Who)

The extras look great, and I’m glad the budget was spent on new restorations of the two worst looking stories. Even if Season 3 gets nothing more done, it’s still more episodes than a McCoy season. Right now I’d be surprised if we even got recons because most stories don’t have telesnaps. The fan recons use a lot of non-BBC screengrabs that might be a nightmare to clear. The Abominable Snowmen animation release is just days away, so I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts after seeing that. I encourage everyone to purchase it and all the animations. I also encourage everyone to email BBC Studios to appeal to them for more. I did, and got a reply, so they do take note! It’s a shame that your making of documentaries aren’t included, because they’re excellent! Please keep the content coming! XX

I should have another video out next week, one I’m quite excited about! I will definitely do a review about Snowmen too when I have gathered my thoughts, feelings and or emotions! Happy you like my videos, thank you for watching :)

The Collection Boxset I have been most excited for by a long way. Cannot wait. :)

Lovely content as always, Josh. Thanks. It occurs to me (as complete conjecture) that a) season 3 will be left until last as b) there is so little of it left - is it not the least represented season? And c) a small amount of budget might have been earmarked from each other boxset, in order to complete the (marketing-wise) unattractive sell of a largely missing season 3. Just my two pennies' worth.

Wikipedia says only two segments (1/2) of The Crusade, is missing.

Josh! In your opinion do you think these sets will be re-released to purchase again one day, for folks like myself who missed out on the first few? Do you hope (like myself) that once each Doctor is complete, they will do "Complete Doctor" box sets?

I hope so!

The Tardis in flight scenes from The Chase might be my biggest sentimental favorites in all of Doctor Who. You can't improve perfection.

It's probably been said elsewhere but Dalek Invasion will have the optional CGI from its original DVD release.

Shame that only ten stories are getting enhanced as that’s what I’m always most excited about but oh well, Daleks invasion of Earth will be fantastic!

I understand your feelings, but it is actually technically quite complex to try and get even stereo from a monaural signal, let alone trying to get 5.1 sound from a monaural sound track where individual tracks are not available. I think it's nice to keep a monaural audio track on the originals. It keeps it more like it was when it was originally broadcast. That's just my feelings though. But yes, it is quite a complex task to try and make a single channel, combined audio track into 5.1 sound

Bill Hartnell is my favorite Doctor and I will be one of those buying Season II and Season III with all the missing stuff and reconstructions. It's a shame Season III is so incomplete, as that was a stunning era for the show.

This is the first collection set I've pre-ordered and I'm very excited about it, did not expect them to give us our first 60s set so soon and am delighted they've started with S2.

Tom Baker! That said very glad to have discovered a Doctor Who channel that actually talks about old Doctor Who. I do love these episodes. I just watched the first two seasons of William Hartnell about a month ago. And I think anyone who's not into classic who is not actually a Whovian. Just my opinion. Also doctor who ended with Peter Capaldi.

I pre ordered this but I sort of wish they'd done all the black and white seasons last just in case we get any new animations or maybe even end up with 1 or 2 orphan episodes back. Personally, I'm hoping that we get Season 25 soon just so we can finally have the complete 7th Doctor era on Blu Ray!

This is the first one of these blu-ray sets I've ordered because I'm such a big Hartnell fan. Since I've not experienced any of the previous blu-ray releases, I suppose I don't have much to compare it to, but nevertheless I'm really excited for it to come out!

I'm extremely happy that a 60's doctor has now got an collection set as the 60's is my favourite era from the classics. Bit gutted about it not having the missing 2 episodes animated.

My Dr Who dvd/blu ray collection is lacking a lot of the First Doctors stories, so I'll probably get this set just to have it. There are a few on this set that I've never seen too. Thanks for another great video/review!

Very much in agreement with you on this, Josh. Interesting points on The Crusade. Could cultural representations be a big reason we're not seeing animation of Crusases, MP, Dalek MP and others? Seems like a third rail nobody wants to touch, and for good reason.

Not sure. I guess they’re doing Abominable Snowmen and that had some questionable stuff in it. I’m sure those conversations are being had!

I betcha BBC is working on the Season 1 Boxset to be released next year around the time of the anniversary. Marco Polo will have a complete soundtrack with maybe stills from the show. I would love for Carole Ann Ford to do the promo for youtube recreating the role of Susan reflecting on what's happened to her since her days with the Doctor (she was last with him in the Death Zone).
