Villengard was first mentioned in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, and is simply a Moffat in-joke. I doubt it's going to go much deeper than that.

Moffat's stuff is all in-jokes. What a terrible, sloppy, mawkish, lifeless episode. A real low for the series. Awful.

It’s a beautiful episode. I loved it. I think the idea is about connections.

Remember Villenguard goes all the way back to the Doctor dances episode with Eccleston

The reason this hokey story works so well is because of the acting!❤❤❤

Most astronomers agree that the star of Bethlehem, based on its brightness and time of year was in fact the planet Venus.

Time of the doctor twice upon a time, and the end of time all featured regenerations

At it's heart, this a story about how Christmas can be a tough time for many people: Those who've lost a loved one at this time of year; Those who have no one to share it with, or those who are required to work through it, separated from friends and family. Slight spoiler for if you ever watch "Press Gang" (and I hope you will!): This episode reminded me a lot of the episode "Love and War", with the briefcase and the... Well... Let's say the emotional focus. And guess who wrote every single episode of "Press Gang".

Actually, Adam is correct - there have been two Christmas episodes that featured regenerations. I'll make people click 'Read More' to find out which ones. SPOILERS! ...no really, spoilers. The episodes are... "The Time of the Doctor" and "Twice Upon a Time'",

My worst Christmas special of recent years felt a bit flat lets hope season 15 is much better

No doubt I am just an old cynic, but I found the ending more cheesy than emotional, with Moffat doing his “everybody lives” schtick yet again. Having said that, if you are going to do it then Christmas is one of the best times! Overall it was quite an enjoyable episode. I also liked the time hotel concept (it reminded me of things like the Wood Between the Worlds from the Narnia books), and for me the most touching part was the Doctor’s relationship with Anita, who I really liked - hopefully we will see her again at some point. The downside of the time we spent with the Doctor and Anita is that Joy disappeared from the narrative for an extended period, so I don’t think we got to know her as well as we should, and that made it harder for me to care about her ultimate fate. However, I thought it was decent festive fare, and for me it probably featured Ncuti’s most confident performance to date.

I think Valengard will just be something Moffatt will use I don't think it will be part of a greater plot

This is one of my least favourite episodes Moffat has had some bad ones in the past but this one was the worsest ever episode in it's entire 61 year run the birth of christ and the whole golden star with energy and the Doctor going on "Oh your so full of joy" yardy yardy yada it was so over the top and it was really cringe the last series and this Christmas special I would never go back to rewatching once was enough I'm currently rewatching the Jodie Whittaker episodes here in Australia at the moment and I have to say I'm enjoying those far more than the Ncuti episodes they haven't been enjoyable they been bland, campy, very disney, very soap opera this isn't "Dr. Who" they seem to just write whatever they like now instead of having science fiction the shows become a joke. Nicola Coughlan whose a superb actress was wasted she was hardly in it. Moffat for his time was great but I really think he's starting to get tired abit now with his writing and I really think the show is long over due for a completely new production team no RTD, Moffat, Tranter, Collinson or Murray Gold I think they all need to leave and bring in new people.

I agree. The show desperately needs new YOUNG blood, it feels horribly out of touch with modern TV.
